Know any prog celebrities who guest starred on something a little out of their line? Examples: Steve Howe on Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Welcome to the Pleasure Dome. And Chris Squire a member of Sam Kinison's backing band on a few occasions.

Not completely out of his line, but Ian Anderson plays flute in a song by the Young Dubliners, a celtic rock/pop band from the US. It's a haunting beautiful instrumental track aptly titled Banshee. It might not be really a detour for him, but still, a completely different band -though the Young Dubliners opened for Jethro Tull on some occasions.

And here it is:

Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman playing on Lou Reed's self-titled debut.

Robert Fripp guest staring on Blondie's "Fade Away And Radiate".

I've heard that song "Fade Away And Radiate" and joked with my friend, saying 'This is such a rip-off of Fripp!!' What a discovery, makes almost too much sense.

Perhaps Steve Hackett playing on the unknown-and-unreleased (until 2007) album Sacred Scenes and Characters by Canterbury Glass.

David Gilmour doing vocals on Kate Bush's "The Dreaming." I know Gilmour was instrumental in the discovery of Bush, but still... How about Brian Eno on "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." Again, Eno and Collins worked together, but still...

I always found this curious - Adrian Belew and Tony Levin (half of 80's model King Crimson) on Joan Armatrading's 'Call Me Names' track..........Levin the Stick-Master and a rather unconventional lead solo from Belew. Really puts a spin on top-40 Pop.

Steve Howe also played on Propaganda - A Secret Wish in the eighties , just how many favours did he owe Trevor Horn?Wink

Keith Emerson played on a Rod Stewart album in the early seventies ( not sure which track or album)

Pete Sinfield wrote the lyrics for Bucks Fizz - Land Of Make Believe

Slightly off topic , Jem Godfrey of Frost was not always a 'proggie' . He produced the all girl pop group Atomic Kitten for his sins ( and he will never be forgivenLOL).

Trevor Horn and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys and Seal. There's no denying someone who has an 'ear' for this sort of stuff............a decent bassist and a member of Yes..........what a guy.......

The Enid were Kim Wilde's backing band for Kids In America

Not exactly a guest spots, but Steve Stewart of The Enid engineered parts of Porcupine Tree's Signify while he was employed at Katrina and the Waves recording studio and John Foxx of Ultravox! did the album cover for Lightbulb Sun.

Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson), Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Pip Pyle, Dave Stewart & Barbara Haskin (Hatfield and the North) all played on Nigel Planer's comedy album 'Neil's Heavy Concept Album'

I recall reading in Tony Levin's biography that he played with the Carpenters back in the 70s.

Let's not forget Fripp producing and playing on Daryl Hall's Sacred Songs (which introduced Frippertronics to a whole army of Hall & Oates fans). Then there's David Gilmour lending his guitar to a few tracks of Peter Cetera's One More Story, although he's done a lot of other work for non-prog artists.

Nick Mason producing the Damned's second album "Music for Pleasure" was an odd matchup.  I read that the band really wanted Syd Barrett to produce, but settled for Nick instead (close enough, I guess).

And Blondie's Chris Stein photographed Fripp for the cover of the latter's Exposure.

Ian Anderson plays guest flute on a song called Passions to Ignite from Face the Fire, an album by Native American flautist Mary Youngblood.

David Gilmour got around a lot in the 80s.  He plays on one track of Paul McCartney's Flowers in the Dirt and on Pete Townshend's White City.

Al di Meola plays on Allergies by Paul Simon.

Rick Wakeman contributed keyboard work to Black Sabbath's 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' album.

Rick also played the memorable piano on Cat Stevens' hit, "Morning has Broken."

Gilmour not only played guitar on White City Fighting, he also wrote the music for that song.

Alex Lifeson played guitar solos on "Crying Over You" and "Holy Water" from [Canadian new wave band] Platinum Blonde's sophomore album, released in 1985.

The title of that album, interestingly, is Alien Shores. "Alien Shore" is the title of a song on the 1993 album by Rush, Counterparts.

Alien Shores was produced by a name well-known to Yes fans: Eddy Offord.

Did we really get this far into the thread without mentioning Geddy Lee's classic vocal on the Bob & Doug McKenzie record? That was formative stuff for some of us. Embarrassed

John Goodsall in one-hit wonder Tony Basil's "Mickey"--and the video as well.
Jon Anderson on the "St. Elmo's Fire" soundtrack.

^ Maybe already mentioned, but John Goodsall played guitars on Atomic Rooster's Nice and Greasy album under the pseudonym of Johnny Mandala. I never picked it, and still find it hard to tell.

Jon Anderson on the Legend soundtrack, but that was pretty proggy so it doesn't count.

Jimmy Page on many Roy Harper albums

David Gilmour on some Roy Harper albums (duet with Chris Spedding in "The Game). David Gilmour also on many shows with Unicorn, and Sutherland Brothers and Quiver

Paul McCartney in at least one Roy Harper album (One of these days in England)

George Harrison in many Monty Python skits. (and songs more than likely!)

Jimi Hendrix has a massive version of DayTripper with the Beatles ... it was on a bootleg many times!

Pete Townsend in both Roger Ruskin Spear albums as producer, player and bum!
