Hope I didn't miss another thread for this.. Had my first RSD this year and was wondering if anyone went on the same quest. I got.. Swans - Debut EP Run the Jewels - 12'' EP The Decemberist - Picaresque Deluxe (Unreleased songs and download for a live performance EP i believe) Alternative artwork as well. Red Vinyl. Also some CDs.. 2$ each: Menomena - Friend or Foe The Postal Service - Give Up The Gorillaz - Plastic Beach ------------- Crushed like a rose in the riverflow. |

Yep, I picked up several CD's, but didn't have time to go through the vinyls this time unfortunately. A local second hand record store chain in Melbourne had 20% off all their stock, so for mostly a few dollars each I got: D.F.A - Duty Free Area - an Italian jazz/fusion band with a bit of RPI thrown in as well. Mostly Autumn - Storms Over Still Water - Hmmm...what a mostly bland album.  Unifaun - s/t (nicely performed Neo album with very strong compositions if you like that sound) Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour, Moroccan Roll, Livestock, Masques Deuter - D - a bit of a classic Krautrock album this one, good to replace a rubbish vinyl copy I had. All in all, pretty happy! |

I couldn't grab the Mastodon vinyl, they only had like 2. I prioritized the Swans and RTJ releases because i figured they'd be rare/sought after. Big fan of both so win win. ------------- Crushed like a rose in the riverflow. |

I spent the day lamenting the fact that in 1986 when I first got into CD"s I would get rid of any vinyl I had of the same title if the packaging was the same. If the CD only had a two page insert and the original had a fold out and a printed sleeve I held onto the vinyl. Now I still have just under 1000 vinyls in my collection but with my son in his early twenties and expressing an interest in 'inheriting' my collection some day, I'm saddened by knowledge that there were some original release LP's that I bought when I was a teen that I no longer have. Like most of my King Crimson, ELP and Yes stuff.  ------------- Thank you for supporting independently produced music |

I never had any nostalgia for "vinyls" I still have many that survived the flood but I have no functioning record players. Many stores are long gone including those that were cd stores. These days I buy directly from the artist whenever possible.... ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

My daughter and I walked to the local record store in beautiful downtown Royal Oak. Hey, and what to my surprise! The very good (and wonderfully loud) Detroit blues-rock band The Muggs were playing in the back of the store, crammed into a space I would say was no larger than 5' X 8' (having played in spots that small, I can say without equivocation it is a real pain in the ass shoehorning all your gear in). We didn't buy any albums, but I pointed out the more important records to my daughter, and how James Cameron stole the look of the Avatar movie landscapes from Roger Dean (to her credit, she pretended to care), and we had fun listening to the band. She ended up buying a grey tie-dyed Led Zeppelin II T-shirt, which is hilarious considering she doesn't listen to them. But she has already stolen my Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Grateful Dead and Tull concert T-shirts, so she at least dresses the part.

I went to my local store Saturday and did not buy anything, really nothing was hitting me of interest. I normally go to downtown Seattle where there are tons of stores but I did not have the time this year. Over that past month or two I have bought enough vinyl that I still need to give a good spin to. -------------

I've never cared for Record Store Day, the vinyl retailer in the neighbouring town is open all year round and go in there on any other Saturday and you can browse the racks and boxes of albums with ease and in relative comfort without having to guard your pile of lucky finds like Smaug protecting his hoard of treasure. On Friday one guy started queuing at 11pm to ensure he snaffled a copy of a later Madness single, the only puzzle for me is why he couldn't have bought it a six hours earlier when the shop was still open, or gotten someone else to get it for him or simply 'phoned the owner and asked for it to be put to one side. The perhaps that's the reason - holding-back stock to bolster the popularity of RSD. Needless to say I didn't visit the shop last Saturday, but I have called in before this month. A vinyl isn't just for Record Store Day. During lunch-break today I ventured into town to buy some lunch and go to the pharmacy to correct a prescription that they'd cocked-up. Unfortunately I'd forgotten that Tuesday is market day and the High Street was closed off, thus rendering half the free on-street parking unobtainable, so I paid 60p to park in the nearest carpark then walked past the market stalls to the chemists, one of which had two crates of second-hand vinyl for sale. Normally these are the usual fare of Carpenters Greatest Hits and dog-eared budget albums that no one wants so I usually ignore them, but today I spied a copy of Nursery Cryme at the front of one of the bins and though I already have a copy the temptation that more goodies would be contained therein was too much to resist. The price-ticket of £30 on the aforementioned Genesisisis album was a bit of a surprise, for the cover quite a tatty looking which didn't bode well for the state of the disc, but I continued leafing through the bin, that did indeed contain the obligatory Carpenters Greatest Hits and more Ironing Maiden albums than anyone should listen to in one sitting. Then two Crimson albums came into view - Islands and Wake... both a little less tatty than Cryme but each displaying a £50 sticker. I moved on to the next bin: Commoner's Crown by Steeleye Span for £3. I did a quick double-take, yup that was the price and since I've not got that on vinyl it was too good to pass up. I quick check of the disc itself - no surface scratches to talk of, very nice in deed, I'm having that. Then loads of 10cc albums that did not interest me in the slightest until I flipped back a disc to reveal a near mint copy of "Sing Children Sing" the début album by Lesley Duncan, again bearing a paltry £3 price ticket. To most, including the stall-holder, that probably won't mean very much, some may know her as one of the backing singers on Dark Side Of The Moon, other's from The Alan Parson Project's Eve, and perhaps a few from her duet with Elton John on Tumbleweed Connection, but I suspect few have heard her solo albums. I've been searching for this album for over 30 years, I've seen it advertised for anywhere between £30 and over £200 (used copies of the CD version commands £25 price-tickets) so to find it for £3 was quite a shock - again a cursory check of the vinyl and I was a happy bunny. "Five quid for two" the guy said as I went to pay. Ho-ho-ho. It's Christmas in April!!!  ------------- What? |

I'm not even sure it was an original copy, it could have been a later re-issue, I didn't check. Yes, it seemed high to me too, but as the hipster fad for vinyl increases the prices will rise. ------------- What? |

^  Well, I'm a big Tull nut, but I haven't heard that one.I know it's their least popular album, but not everyone dislikes it, that I've read anyway, and I do enjoy Ian's solo album from the preceding year, Walk into Light, well, more than a couple of Tull albums I can think of at least (Rock Island and Dot Com  ), so I thought "I'll give it a shot, and Catfish Rising too".  -------------
