Wassup Progarchivers! I'm back (for the 27th time!!!) and gonna try and throw out a new series of threads, which is actually a repeat of a series of threads I did about five years ago. If this series takes off I'd like to go in some obscure directions and consider random topics, but for the first few editions, we'll stick to the simple, more obvious topics.

So with that said, welcome to "Pick Only One" (volume two).

We'll start with the most obvious topic of them all. Your favourite band.

The rules are simple (as if the name of the thread doesn't give it away). No runners up. No second best. No honorable mentions. No joint firsts. No "I couldn't decide between...". This is the thread series where we separate the boys from the men. Where you have to suck it up, grow a pair, and pick only one answer.

Got two favourites? Well, tough sh*t. Because only one of them will get mentioned in this thread.

*Terms and conditions apply. Anyone who violates these rules will be prosecuted.

And here's mine... Dream Theater.

Whilst I haven't really listened to too much Prog lately, and I certainly haven't listened to this band too much lately, the fact still remains that when it's all said and done, Dream Theater are my number one band of all time. I came across them in 2003 with 'Images and Words' and was instantly hooked. I have all their albums, most of their solo/side-project releases, all the official bootlegs and most of the fan club cds. I have all their DVDs, two tattoos, I bought the first edition of their biography 'Lifting Shadows' (and yes, my name in the roll of honor) and I've seen them live. Once. Also managed to get my picture with Petrucci, Myung, Portnoy and Rudess.

The musicians, the energy, the lyrics, the consistency, the originality, everything that this band practiced was
the embodiment of prog rock.

There will never be another.

We male prog fans have never spoken to women besides our mothers and, as free thinkers, are skeptical of their existence. If womankind does exist, what constitutes a woman? Will the future generation view women as we view prog? By my calculations, we should be able to figure out the answers by page 104.

^I've never felt that to be true. Well back when I was 14, I possibly felt that way about Floyd, but nowadays I couldn't name an artist that literally towers above everything else. Maybe in the heat of the moment during a spin of an album I'll go "Oh my sweet ford it doesn't get any better than this!!" and then I move on to a new album and say exactly the same.

^ nice paradoxically self-refuting comment right there. That was witty! Or was it? Wacko

For me picking a favorite band is harder than picking a favorite song, favorite album, or even a favorite musician. I guess it's logical since a band includes all those components, thus adding more complexity to the decision.

I'm going with King Crimson.

Nevermind.
This is a cover page of an article about 1977 / 1978 tour of my life-time favourite band Smak. The best line-up with Miki Petkovski at the keys (he played his Minimoog so majesticaly!), and that tour has a legendary status now.
However, yesterday afternoon I found this live recorded video (audio only) of Jethro Tull cover played by Smak at Požarevac festival 1973, and it was one of the very first Smak shows; they were just formed in 1973, they didn't have enough of their own songs yet nor already released material at that time, so they used to play some covers at that early phase. This is actually a raw recording by the audience, but imho it sounds enough powerfull that I hope that Jethro Tull's hardcore fans here will not be disaippointed Wink
So, here's Locomotive Breath cover by just formed young prog band Smak - later the best Yugoslavian prog rock band ever - at Požarevac festival 1973, Serbia, ex-Yugoslavia.

I can understand people having trouble picking just one band......I could have chosen Genesis, Yes, or even Tull over KC but that first album by KC knocked my socks off when I heard it in the spring of 1970. Still the most seminal album in prog imho.

BTW...I assumed the OP meant prog band but I see some mentioned other groups. By an open criteria I might have gone with the Beatles since I grew up with their music and bought their first singles when I was about 12 or 13.

Any genre. Any band. You, however, have slightly bent the rules and tried to squeeze in various names by cheeky "I might have gone with's"....

This is not allowed, and continuous violations will result in criminal charges.

As it stands, your official POO is King Crimson.

Don't you hate it when people post pics and you don't know who the silly band is...?

Agreed! I tried to quote the poster so that I could just see where the link takes me, but the quote shows the actual picture, not the link. Angry

I haven't had a "favorite band" in at least 20 years.

This in spades. I have 'favourites'.

This, but my favorite is Acid Mothers Temple

My band pick was Motorpsycho, but I guess that was obvious to everyone, the way I shamelessly dropped their name, and the name and picture of the cover of their new live album, in just about every thread possible yesterday (OK, it was only about five, but still), like the fanboy I am. Oh, and there I went and did it again. LOL

But with good reason, the band is one of the most exciting out there ATM, always trying something different (well, every other album or so I'd say), and on the new one they're treading new ground again. Thrilling stuff! Shame it's expensive and comes in a limited edition, should've been made available to most people.

King Crimson!

I like their music as much now, as when I first heard it.
