It's hard to be exact in categories and definitions in such polls. Surely it's not the best representave of ballad as a genre, but at least it provokes same emotions as most of the pure ballads. And imo it feets in this poll quite well

As ballads go, I'm torn between VDGG and Pink Floyd but I've been loving H To He recently, so I'm erring towards "House With No Door"

Locomotive Breath, even if it's not a ballad.

Second place goes to The Night Watch, one of the very few things by KC that I actually like.

Only 3 votes for The Night Watch? Apologies to Starless, but I think it's probably my favorite King Crimson track. Is there a better song about a painting? I think not. Wink

I was thinking about voting for "From the Beginning", which is really beautiful... but then I saw "Great Gig" and just had to vote for it. Though I agree it kind of doesn't fit the ballad description, nor does it sit well among the others here (I guess Wish you Were Here would have fit better).

I bet Fallen Angel wouldn't have left any chance for other great songs in this poll. So I restrained myself from putting it in. Forgot about Time Table tho...

From the Beginning. A great song for summer with some of Greg Lake's best acoustic and electric guitar playing plus an excellent moog solo.

Actually quite astonished at this as well, The song has amazing catarthical intro, beautiful gentle melody and, while not complex by crimson standarts, still impressive solo.

The Great Gig in the Sky just above House With No Door and Night Watch.

I never thought of those last three as ballads.

I went with From the Beginning, but House With No Door is close. The Night Watch was in my top 5 of Crimson for a while. It's probably not now, but it's lovely.

I struggle to think of the Yes song as a ballad, more of a upifting and spirited song, the lyrical aspect is as important to a ballad, as the tune/melody and the message

ELP - From the beginning...

Good list. Night Watch would come a close second.

Are they all really ballads?? Can't really remember exactly what a ballad is, and don't have time to Google, but if someone asked me to describe Locomotive Breath, I'm not sure I'd say it was a ballad. Great gig also doesn't have any lyrics, and I thought a ballad had to tell some kind of story...

Whatever, nice list..

Shoot... I know nothing about Van Der Graff Generator but I actually am familiar with House with No Door, and it's a sad song... a really sad song. This one wins here.

Not prog, but that 'classic ballad' Vincent by Don Mclean is also great. Both have a great atmosphere.
