Both great. I will vote Floyd. Piper features more sonic 'colour'. Truly, both are very close to my heart.

I adore both albums but would vote for the Doors debut as there are no weak(er) tracks in evidence. For me Piper is diminished by the self indulgence of Interstellar Overdrive and PowR TocH  (i.e. stretching what are very good ideas to flagging breaking point)

Hi,

The Doors.

Had not even heard Piper until 2 years later and PF was not really known in America that much at the time. AM radio, of which the cut up version of "Light My Fire" was a very big hit, and later became a hit on the FM stations by playing the longer version ... and I still had not heard PF and I was into the English scene fairly well, knowing Kinks, Beatles,  Stones, The Who, Incredible String Band, Small Faces and others. It wasn't until 1970 that I heard a PF song, and NOT on radio ... it was in a friends house. And I actually have never heard a single PF song with Syd Barrett played on radio anywhere, except Guy Guden's shows in Santa Barbara, and he played them all and then some!

Don't get me wrong, and PF deserves their place in history.

But nowadays, when I hear "When the Music is over" and then hear "The Wall" ... you know what? The Doors song is more valuable to my experience than Pink Floyd's is.

I will go with The Doors, but Pink Floyd's is also a good album, and became a bigger band that The Doors

So why are you comparing a track that appeared on the (US Band) Doors 2nd album from 1967 with an album by (UK Band) Pink Floyd from 1979?. Perhaps 12 years of experiential nous might have tipped the scales?. PF (irrespective of your patronage) are still extant, the Doors ain't, so one band managed to prevail/survive through the volatile changes in the fickle popular music marketplace and one didn't. Dodos are superior to film critics?

If (for me) there is a closer comparison to The Doors debut in Pink Floyd discography, I personally would pick up Wish You Were Here or Animals.

Literally progressive ey? LOL

Voted The Doors.

Pink Floyd's debut has never done anything for me. There are of course some real standout tracks, but I don't care for the silly, psychedelic songs. So the album just uneven for me.

Piper has its moments but it is one of my least favorite Floyd albums.  While The Doors is not perfect, I much prefer it.  Both are groundbreaking.

I like both but I like the Doors better.  Floyd's gets points off for having some quaint songs which I don't find on The Doors.

The Doors; pretty much all of its songs are on at least 1 compilation album of the band, hell most of it (except for 2 of the tracks on side two: I Looked at You and Take It as It Comes i believe) is on the 2 compilation albums that i own (The Best of the Doors the '85 and '07 versions)

but then again, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a good record in the Floyd's discography

I really like both bands, but unfortunately their debuts are among the worst in their discographies imo. The only song on Piper that I like is Matilda Mother, and there are only a few songs I remember liking from the Door's debut. I'll have to listen to the Doors's debut again. So as of now, no vote.

I don't really know much from The Doors, except for a compilation album... so of course I don't know their debut and can't vote here. However, there was absolutley no song on that compilation album that I liked better than Astronomy Domine.

I never felt that The Door as a whole were a full contributing band, to me they were more a front man lead singer with a band. Unhappy

It's strange to compare these two. Floyd, of course. is best. "Piper" is the greatest album of art rock at all.

The Doors

Their debut album was a favorite of mine when I was younger (LOL).

Piper... requires a special mood, had there been ASoS or More, they would have got my vote though.

this is the only poll in which the Doors would win against Pink Floyd. I don't find Piper that great, I rarely listen to it, it's a PF album for which I need a special mood, this one and also Ummagumma the studio album.

The Doors - made a big impression on me when I discovered it. Piper had its moments, but with just a few exceptions I never really got Syd's whimsy and childlike charm (although the non-album single - See Emily Play - is a classic)
