Ocean is way overproduced and has the worse cheesy synth sound I've ever heard in my life, it's almost unlistenable and completely ruins the compositions

that said Planets isn't very good either

Both albums are great, but I feel Planets stands out a bit more for me. I love the synth sound on both albums.

Some of the cheesiest lyrics and vocal deliveries of any band ever, but it's totally worth it, lol.

Both top-tier albums. I will vote Ocean, if only because I'm a sucker for Jurgen Rosenthal's drumming. And Poseidon's Creation is possibly the ultimate Eloy track in my world.

Both are great  but Colours, Planets and Time to Turn are Eloy's peak IMO.  So Planets

I own both of these and have always enjoyed those easy listening synth sounds and cheesy lyrics
Voted for oceans mainly for Poseidon's Creation.

correct!
and I would add the superb "Inside" to the list.  Freaked out vocals and wonderful wild jamming.
Lyrically you might find pause, although they don't bother me, vocally you might complain, although I think Frank is just fine except when he sings falsetto on the awful "Destinations", but musically Eloy knew exactly what they were doing, and did it superbly.

My three favorites are "Inside", "Dawn" and "Time to Turn", 3 different eras, 3 incredible albums.  My next favorites would be "Colours" and "Planets", so to me the early 80s era wins.  Next come "Ocean" and "Silent Cries", oft considered their best, not my favorites but still darn good.  Following that I do enjoy "Ra", "Tides Return Forever" and "Ocean 2".  Not big on "Floating", "Power and the Passion", and "Visionary", which nonetheless has some good moments.  Only "Destination" is a real dud IMO

Planets for me.

Never liked Ocean very much. Yeah, good but not really impressive.

I've got allt heir studio stuff from Floating to Performance (the latter is their one and only faux pas IMO).

My fave is Dawn which is their best ever.
Time to Turn as close second (End of an Odissey is amazing!)
Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes is third on the list.

I love everything from the debut to Ocean, and everything from Ra to present. I like Colours and Performance as well though. Tongue

I forgot to mention Performance - it's down there with Floating and P&P, not a favorite at all, but not terrible.  The final track has an incredible lead guitar solo.  Oh yeah. and not a fan of Metromania at all, other than the very cool "All Life is One" and the title cut. I mean if you are gonna go all 80s, you might as well be catchy

agreed about "End of an Odyssey".  Not to attract a rough crowd, but the outro is one of the places where Eloy shows a strong ALAN PARSONS PROJECT influence, as they did on "Colours" as well.

Clap

I find the lyrical delivery as well as the vocal delivery can be a turnoff on the first couple of listens on stuff like Ocean and Planets, but they really do have a purpose and their own sound. I always lol at most of the lyrics on Ocean, but the music is so damn solid and engaging.

Gotta love that German spin on simple English "...of all times..." etc Tongue. That's part of the charm for me. There's some damn good bass playing in there, as well.

Funny, because I feel like for myself, they didn't really pick up until Dawn, and then started going downhill (fast) after Metromania. Awesome band either way!

ELOY seemed to possess a flair for drama and suspense, that could be considered over the top for sure, but those are oft maligned traits of prog in general.  I think Frank took the music and concepts seriously.  I find no fault with that;  it sure beats singing about drinking and getting the girl over and over.  And, finally, in terms of spacey symphonic, not many bands compete with Eloy on melody.  It's clear to me that this was a very important aspect to their sound that they adhered to pretty consistently.

I think you're in the wrong music forum. You sure you are talking about the 1977 album Ocean? I could think of millions of worse synth sounds. The weakest part of Oceans is the composing as a whole imo. Some moments just drag on during the album but there are some great moments. I think the vocal parts are the bands weakest of the 70s though.

-------------
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

It's just his opinion, I can completely understand not being able to stand the synth. I'm not a fan of the synth, although I find it decent on Ocean. I've never understood why the vocalist bothers so many people, I love his vocals.

^That's why this forum is awesome; so much insight into what people love/can't stand about various aspects of progressive music. I personally love the synth, but the vocal lines can get a bit irritating at times.

I've come to accept that as part of the Eloy charm, however Tongue.

It's not the voice, it's the music when he sings on ocean. Just synth and vocals. Probably the bands only boring moments over their 1973-83 period

Oh, sorry. I must have misunderstood. I agree that it's boring when it's just vocals and synth.

I prefer others in their discography to these two, but if I were to choose between these two it would probably be Ocean.
