I already have Anekdoten, Agalloch, Opeth and Leprous. Should I try Anglagard, Riverside, or something else entirely?..Hopefully this will make me forget some good but cheesy bands I've tried recently.

Anglagard is neither extreme metal nor heavy Ermm. It is symphonic and sounds a bit like Genesis/Steve Hackett, but mostly instrumental.
If you like Anekdoten, you might also like Landberk. Thumbs Up

Well...I would try reading the Heavy Prog page at PA and listening to some of the high rated albums here.

try some Rush or Porcupine Tree before moving on to less known bands...

there is also an extreme metal page link at the top of the main page headings.

Yeah nothing much extreme in the bands you mention (which is to say ExTech has little to do with HeavyProg).

Almost anything with Ron Jarzombek for Tech.

From the bands you listed i'd go with Intronaut.

They're not mindlessly metal, a nice mix of heavier vocals and normal singing, great musicianship, etc.

One of the most confusing recommendations here. I don't know what to say.

Indeed Anglagard has nothing of Metal, but it's great anyway, so you might just as well check them out. I might say you could try Pain of Salvation, Devin Townsend, Haken. Riverside are great, though they are more in the soft side of metal, I guess, nothing extreme about them. I guess you already know Dream Theater?

Oh yes, and you might just as well listen to Sleepwalkers by Van Der Graaf Generator. Not metal at all, for they are a full blown 70's prog band with no guitars at all... but that singing from Peter Hamill might just as well be the precursor for extreme metal vocalists.

Try the  https://davidmaximmicic.bandcamp.com/album/bilo-30" rel="nofollow - best

If you like Agalloch try with these albums

Fen - The Malediction Fields
Alcest - Souvenirs D`un Autre Monde
Ulver - Bergtatt
Enslaved - Ritiiir

Similar to Opeth (like Blackwater Park and Still Life) i recommend you
Farmakon - A Warm Glimpse

If you like Anekdoten, Try Landberk, Sinkadus, Anglagard, Gargamel, Ravanna (not metal bands but all great)

Really dont like Leprous, but try Into etenity, a truly progresive melodic death metal, i recommend you the album Buried in Oblivion

If you really want extreme you could give Gorguts a listen.

Along with some of the excellent suggestions above, try:

Isis– Panopticon

Neurosis– Through Silver and Blood

Blut Aus Nord– Memoria Vetusta II

Krallice– Years Past Matter

Liturgy– Aesthethica

Deafheaven– Sunbather

Gris– A l'ame enflammée...

Negura Bunget– Om

And the unstated obvious:

maudlin of the Well– Bath, Leaving Your Body Map

Kayo Dot– Choirs of the Eye

I second Atavachron's suggestion - Jarzombek is mindblowing. Check out Blotted Science - Cretaceous Chasm; start with the youtube video synched to King Kong, follow up with the video explaining his 12 tone concept behind the song.

MESHUGGAH !! The best extreme metal I've come across. I'm not a fan of Death Growls, but in this band, I can accept them coz the music / playing is outrageously insane - in a fantastic way

For a change of sound, you might want to try Cynic or (even better) Exivious some time.

Prog Metal - Try Pain Of Salvation, Redemption & Fates Warning...great vocalists in Gildenlow and Alder..and best musicianship among all the bands listed under Prog Metal category here.
Extreme Metal - Now since u already enjoy Opeth and Leprous, try the most popular ones first..i.e. Death and Cynic..also Aghora ( Jazz-Metal) by Cynic's rythm guys...as Angelo mentioned - Exivious. (Fantastic Jazz - Metal with a jam like feel )...if u happen to enjoy these bands then i feel u wud b ready to explore most of the extreme bands.
Enslaved has already been mentioned..
Try Edge Of Sanity - Crimson (40minutes of awesomeness).
Animals as Leaders
Gojira...
Mastodon
.
.
.
.
.
Lots of great bands there, but most importantly u shld first go through the reviews and find for urself the one's that suit ur taste and mood. P.S. Never jump on to bands like Gorguts/Negura Bunget/Deathspell Omega...they're freaking awesome..,but u won't b able to enjoy them unless u have sufficient Extreme Metal experience.

I recommend the finnish band Insomnium (if you haven't already, I dunno). It's a melodic death metal band but it's quite atmospheric, if i saw them classified as progressive death, I would not disagree.

Another melodic death metal band I enjoy is Be'Lakor. I warmly recommend it.

If u enjoy Agalloch's post black metal then u can try Alcest.
Neurosis and Isis are the seminal bands.
I think u already know Tool.
Fen
Intronaut
Early Ulver
Maudlin of the Well
Devin Townsend and many more.
You can go through some reviews by Mr. Conor Fynes. He is my most trusted reviewer for all things related to Post Metal/Extreme.

The reviewer named 'Umur' covers a lot of ground in this field too. Worth perusing.

Since most people are listing heavy prog, I'll jump in with my (limited) knowledge on Extreme/Technical:

Gorguts - The most extreme it gets
Meshuggah - Fast-paced guitars, rapid-fire drumming
Obscura - Specifically check out Cosmogenesis for some melodic extreme metal (there's an oxymoron)
Becoming The Archetype - Don't get fooled by the Christian label they sometimes get, they are full blown death
Nocturnus - Part of the beginning of the genre, also known for being sci-fi and the inclusion of keyboards
Suffocation - Another groundbreaking artist, who popularized speed-playing in the genre. Also known to have the first slam riff in death metal history
Spawn Of Possession - Although less known than most, they are among my favourites, releasing a god-like album known as 'Incurso'. A landmark of the genre and probably my favourite one from it.

Now Anglagard...
I first tried them quite early in my prog journey...(u know..the reviews)...even before Genesis/Yes/KC/VdGG. Everything about them was to my liking..but it didn't click..how could it have? I wasn't prepared for them.
Nothing metal there. Mostly instrumental wid some vocals in Swedish...i started out as a metalhead and i was a bit uncomfortable with symphonic bands back then...they seemed too mellow for my tastes. But this band changed my perception (about mellowness). Clearly the most agressive symphonic band out there..more so than most of the extreme bands. Took me 2 years to fully appreciate their unique brand of music. Now they are essential.

From the Heavy Prog category you can try The Mars Volta. As agressive as Anglagard/any extreme band out there in their approach. The kind of music that can make ur soul dance inside ur body (only if u happen to enjoy their music or else it might give u a headache )

So the constant double-bass drumming is referred to as 'blast beats' ??

Posted By: Atlas Cube
Date Posted: December 05 2015 at 02:33
No, blast beats have the constant snare hits.
I'm very much into all forms of metal, have no problem with growl vocals, but I'm really not feeling blast beats. In a drum beat, the snare defines the phrasing (especially in odd meters). When you have constant snares, it just kills any kind of groove...

What the heck does Tomas Haake do then ?? When he drums, it's like no-one else exists.   Meshuggah are my intro to all this extreme stuff - I'm mainly symph, Canterbury, Space, Kraut, R.P.I. etc. for decades, now I'm digging this. I'm still uncomfortable with 'growl', but generally the music behind it is insanely good, yet instrumental Extreme isn't quite there. I love double-kick, never tire from them

Textures is one of my favorite bands from this genre.  They just put out a new song a week or two ago, and it sounds great.

Just went and saw Tesseract and Skyharbor last night.  Both are great, though I'm not sure if it's heavy enough for you.

I recommend Nevermore. Amazing Progressive Power Thrash band.

I would say go back and check out some of the late-80!s early-90's when prog metal was really finding it's legs. These 4 all rose from the hardcore/ metal crossover scene that exploded in the 80's, all with a very different take on the the manifestation of progmetal.

Watchtower - Control and Resistance
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
Voivod - Demension Hätross and Nothingface
Cynic - Focus

Later stuff:

Unexpected
Martyr - Feeding the Abscess
Arsis - We are the Nightmare
Coprofago - Unorthodox Creative Criteria

If we're going back to the 90s, we cannot leave Invocator "Weave The Apocalypse" out of the picture.  That album was years ahead of its time.  Crazy grooves and all sorts of wild time signature changes.
