I've always been a fan of the first five albums.
Aqualung is a good go to album for me but my favorite from those
early albums is Stand Up.

I voted on Minstrel in the Gallery just to give this album a praise, but its not necessarily my favorite.

List of favourites in chronological order:
- Stand Up
- Benefit
- Aqualung
- TAAB
- A Passion Play
- Minstrel in the Gallery
- Songs From the Wood
- Heavy Horses
- Crest of a Knave
- Roots to Branches

I'am the kind of fan that cant really have a favourite album... I love everything from them. Maybe I'll try to put that ten in some order, but... dont know... it doesnt seem fair with the group I love.

Oh, by the way, the compilation "Living in the Past" is awesome.

I voted WarChild not because it contains their best material but because I think it is their most successfully integrated collection of songs.  Though I do hear a long-winded concept album under the surface, instead we got a trim selection of choice heavy prog.

Songs From The Wood is my personal favorite.
I love the "folk" trilogy: SFTW, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch.

After those, I'd probably go with Minstrel in the Gallery and/or TAAB.

Yep.....that about sums  it up.
And 'best' is different from your personal favorite at times.

I will always choose Benefit as my favorite though Thick As A Brick is arguably their best work ever.

4)Songs from the Wood
5)Stand Up

Three best Jethro Tull's albums are actually three sadly underrated albums imo; A Passion Play, Songs from The Wood  (the best prog folk album of 70s prog in general) and Too Old...

A Passion Play certainly deserves more love and good reviews. Even more after the Extend Performance boxset which I cant say enough how much it give justice to the Play.

I also whish to see Minstrel finally with a full 4 stars in PA. 3.99 irritate my nerves LOL

SFTW and HH were/ are high regarded by Tull's fans but it's pretty clear that the prog audience now & in general are praised some far, say, less interesting 70s Prog Folk albums instead of those two Tull's releases (especially SFTW which is musically the very best album of 70s Prog Folk), although both were regarded in 70s as the best prog folk masterpieces released in that golden decade. Strange really, because both SFTW and HH are passed the time test and both sound today not dated all all.

Those two Tull releases are number 3 (SFTW) and number 18 (HH) in the top prog folk albums here on PA so hardly ignored, especially considering that #1 and 2 are also Tull albums.  They are both great albums.  If you mean that those who listen to a lot of prog folk don't necessarily pick the two Tull albums as the best of the sub genre, that might well be true.  There's a lot of great prog folk out there from the 1970s and more recently.

When I talk about overrated and underrated albums in general, so not only about these two by Tull, I never do that with the PA charts in mind. Yes, I mean that those who listen to a lot of prog folk rarely pick SFTW as the best album of the subgenre released in 70s, although SFTW is like, without a question, "CttE" for 70s Prog Folk.

That's an apt description, since SFTW is the mainstream prog equivalent of CTTE among prog folk albums. Everybody knows it, whether they know any other prog folk or not, and many don't know any other prog folk.   So perhaps those who listen to a lot of prog folk might have some valuable insight into other gems that are out there, since they have not only heard SFTW and HH, but many other albums as well.   There are bands that came to prog from a folk orientation, which is not really the case for Tull.  Ian Anderson came to it late in the game; after dabbling in it in his early 1970s albums, he then produced Steeleye Span's "Now We Are Six" album, and shortly thereafter released SFTW.

I love their '77 - '82 period the most. My top list would go something like:

1. Songs From the Wood
2. Heavy Horses
3. A (or U for underrated)
4. Broadsword and the Beast
5. Thick as a Brick
6. Stormwatch
7. Aqualung

... It gets even trickier after that.
