After he left Renaissance Mach 1 and before he reformed that band as Illusion, James McCarty formed the short lived rock group SHOOT and released one album called "On the Frontier", the title cut being a much heavier version of track he wrote with Betty Thatcher that appeared on the Mach II "Ashes are Burning" album the same year.  Confused?

This is crossover if anything, but I'm not sure it really qualifies.  It's just that some of the tracks remind me of the Moody Blues in their more rocking moments, and my favorites here have gobs of mellotron.  See what you think.  It's on spotify but here is another link.  Pay special attention to "Ships and Sails", the title cut, "Sepia Sister" and "Old Time Religion".

It sounds like proto, at best, to me.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

I think you're right, and since it's from 1973, I'm not sure how proto it would be.

A case could also be made for prog related, but need we bother?
