Hello, yes I know there are a lot of topics on the net about Bands who play music in the style of Pink Floyd and there are always the same names like Porcupine Tree, Anathema, Camel, Eloy, RPWL and so on, but I want to create a list especially with Songs (and not only the artists) and they similarity to Pink Floyd. A lot of bands, who had Pink Floyd-like Songs cannot be compared in total to PF. You know what all of us will declare as the Pink Floyd Style: slow tempo, repetitive patterns, a slightly depressive mood, psychedelic, simple drums, long song structures, wide keyboard sounds and so on. So I want to keep a focus on the "middle era" from Atom Heart Mother until Animals (and not the atonal early stuff or the more pop orientated later music). Ok, I will start with the List: Porcupine Tree - Radioactive Toy (Live Version on Coma Divine) Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways (Little Brother of Shine on you crazy Diamond, isn't it?) Porcupine Tree - Dark Matter (reminds me of Comfortably Numb) Porcupine Tree - Neural Rust (same style as Dark Matter) Porcupine Tree - Dark Origins (same style as Dark Matter as well) Eloy - Astral Entrance: Master Of Sensation (reminds me on Shine On You Crazy Diamond as well) Eloy - The Apocalypse (maybe a little bit of Animals) Genesis - The Waiting Room (Interstellar Overdrive in the beginning, wide keyboard sounds in the Rest of the song) Frank Zappa - The Torture never stops (from "In New York", slow tempo - psychedelic touch) So you see - my list of suggestions is really short, thats why I want to have more references here. greetz Sarah |

For me The Future Kings of England are perfect in that area though they aren't always as polished as Floyd. But as Meltdowner mentioned that thread names other bands. ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. Haquin |

"The Marilyn Monroe Memorial Church" by Amon Düül 2 from their album "Tanz der Lemminge" sounds a bit like "A Saucerful of Secrets" or "Interstellar Overdrive". "Wahn" by Tangerine Dream from their album "Atem" sounds a bit like a cross between "Several Species of Furry Animals..." and "Careful with that Axe, Eugene". and "Schwingungen" from the album of the same name by Ash Ra Tempel sounds like "A Saucerful of Secrets" as well, especially the second part I sincerely doubt any of these artists tried to imitate them though; they all have their very own style -------------  A shot of me as High Priestess of Gaia during our fall festival. Could be off the mark here, but I always thought The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway's Hairless Heart was an ode to the atmospherics 'Floyd could typically produce. I'm sure at least a couple others off the seminal album are comparable to 'Floyd to say the least. ------------- "It just has none of the qualities of your work that I find interesting. You know, whenever I put on a proggy album in front of non-prog fans, they inevitably say, "This sounds like Pink Floyd." Happened two or three times in the past week alone: I put on the BBC Soft Machine 70s collection, sounds like Floyd; I put on a Gong album, sounds like Floyd; I put on a Nucleus (!) albums, sounds like Floyd. When all you know is Floyd, everything sounds like Floyd. But, to answer the question: Pulsar! Pulsar DOES sound like Floyd, especially the self-titled LP. ------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there..... |

On a similar note, when I tell people I'm into prog rock, they automatically assume that I like Pink Floyd, or they just start talking about them. And I really don't like Floyd much. No one wants to talk Yes or Genesis, or Crimson, or ELP...just Floyd. That is annoying. Oddly enough, though, I do love bands that are influenced by Pink Floyd. Airbag is one of my favorite bands right now, and I would recommend anything from their catalog. Airbag is like all the good stuff about Floyd - the guitar tone, the mellow, atmospheric style, the addicting melodies - without all the bad stuff, like saxophone, gospel choirs, and cash register sounds.

Interesting how people start threads then never seem to return to them........at any rate I listened to Eloy-Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes yesterday and that whole album drips with Pink Floyd influence as does many of their albums around that time like Ocean, Dawn ,Power and Passion, etc. ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. That David Gilmour guy has some tunes very reminiscent of Floyd. I think he even toured with Australian Floyd in the 80s and 90s. ------------- ...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology... |

Love this song. Got turned onto Crippled Black Phoenix recently, because I came across this track. Definite Floyd influence. Also can't wait for the new Steven Wilson album to come out Friday.
