22nd January will see the release of a new  https://www.facebook.com/StevenWilsonHQ/" rel="nofollow - Steven Wilson  album “4 ½”, so titled because it forms an interim release between Steven’s recently released fourth album Hand. Cannot. Erase. and the next studio album.

4 ½ comprises 6 tracks with a total running time of 37 minutes. 4 of the songs originated during the sessions for Hand. Cannot. Erase., and one from the recording sessions for the previous album The Raven that Refused to Sing. The final track is a version of Don’t Hate Me, a song originally recorded by  https://www.facebook.com/PorcupineTreeOfficial/" rel="nofollow - Porcupine Tree  in 1998, and is based on a live recording made on the recent tour of Europe with additional recording later done in the studio. The vocals on this new version are sung as a duet between Steven and  https://www.facebook.com/ninetayebOfficial/" rel="nofollow - Ninet Tayeb .

Also appearing on the album are members of Steven’s band over the last few years;  https://www.facebook.com/AdamHolzmanOfficial/" rel="nofollow - Adam Holzman ,  https://www.facebook.com/nickbeggsofficial/" rel="nofollow - Nick Beggs ,  https://www.facebook.com/GuthrieGovanOfficial/" rel="nofollow - Guthrie Govan (Official) ,  https://www.facebook.com/davekilminster/" rel="nofollow - Dave Kilminster ,  https://www.facebook.com/Craig-Blundell-183320435091082/" rel="nofollow - Craig Blundell ,  https://www.facebook.com/marco.minnemann.77/" rel="nofollow - Marco Minnemann ,  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chad-Wackerman/106367129393604" rel="nofollow - Chad Wackerman , and https://www.facebook.com/Theo.travis2/" rel="nofollow - Theo Travis .

4 ½ will be released by Kscope on CD, 180 gram vinyl, and blu-ray, with all formats housed in a beautiful die-cut sleeve photographed by Lasse Hoile and designed by Carl Glover. The blu-ray (audio only) edition includes high res stereo, a 5.1 mix of the album, and a bonus 5.1 mix of the new version of Lazarus (recently included on the Transience vinyl compilation). The vinyl edition will include a download code for the album in a choice of FLAC or mp3. The album will also be available digitally on 22nd January from  https://www.facebook.com/iTunes/" rel="nofollow - iTunes ,  https://www.facebook.com/Amazon/" rel="nofollow - Amazon.com ,  https://www.facebook.com/GooglePlay/" rel="nofollow - Google Play  &  https://www.facebook.com/applemusic/" rel="nofollow - Apple Music .

Breaking news on PA. Steven Wilson's new album, entitled "4 ½" hits spot number 24 on Best Prog Albums Ever, beating out Miles Davis, Gentle Giant and *gasp* Steven Wilson himself. Is there anything this man cannot do?????

I wouldn't be surprised unfortunately, I honestly don't get why he's so popular.

^ I enjoy all of SW solo material, but I really love Porcupine Tree and the heaviness. On the HCE tour he played Sectarian from GFD, but explained he changed the arrangement so the song was heavier, more metal....It sounded like a PT song off In Absentia........nice.

That would be a good idea for a thread, like the "Why did Pink Floyd..." one

I'm sure he would still not play PT's 90's material, that's what I'd like to see the most.
He didn't play "Sectarian" but played "Sound of Muzak" and "Open Car" here two months ago Smile

On the Raven that Refused to Sing tour he played Radioactive Toy, and it was amazing (Theo Travis added to the solos). Actually, that was an amazing concert, I wonder why he didn't release any concert from that tour... it would be one of my favourite live albums or videos ever.

There is one thing he cannot do: prevent his albums from being overrated by people who haven't even heard them yet Ermm.

well I had read in the interview earlier this year that he planned everything already about his next album... so I was shocked about this news like how could you release a album, tour half a year and then release a new album...so I thought it must be smth else and yeah its the songs from the albums session

Interesting.

Even though HCE isn't a fav, I am interested in hearing the stuff deemed no good for it.

At the second Montreal show of the HCE tour, which I attended, Wilson played How is Your Life today and Trains.

From setlist.fm they played lots o' PT -- http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/steven-wilson/2015/royal-albert-hall-london-england-73f4da81.html " rel="nofollow - http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/steven-wilson/2015/royal-albert-hall-london-england-73f4da81.html  -- including 90's stuff

Should be interesting to see these outtakes. The Raven cut should be good, I'm wondering what the headpaint cuts are like. Considering how dull the album's tracks were after the first two, could it be that these are diamonds carelessly left in the rough, or just more soot?

Here in Seattle on HCE tour he did play Sleep Together, which was freaking awesome..so loud and hard, it was great. Would love to have heard Trains.....

BTW: I just pre-ordered 4 1/2 from Burning Shed.

Agreed, Sleep Together was fantastic - and fit within the context of the show remarkably well.

I also attended shows that were part of the Raven tour. Radioactive Toy was a fantastic encore - probably the best version of that song I've heard. I would love to have a recording of that...

Terrible name for an album. It was probably the first thing he thought of: "I have a b-sides album i want to release right after my fourth album. Got it, 4 1/2!". Cmon man, Really??

Nonetheless, I'm sure it will be an interesting listen, at the very least.

Really though. Most popular/powerful force in the modern art-rock/progressive rock scene, and the best title he could think of sounds like a parody of itself. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of Steven Wilson's music, but I have a hard time lately taking anything he does seriously anymore. And it leaves me scratching my head: what magic is he doing to keep so many people interested and at the top of the game lately?

Yep! I'm off the Steven Wilson bandwagon. Raven or any Wilson releases can't hold up to the 70's classics. I never feel like revisiting the albums, so I got a good bundle of money selling my Raven That Refused Limited Edition Boxset. And I won't regret/miss it.

Money went towards something much better than an arrogant artist who believes any modern prog band who isn't heavy deserves s**t (Flower Kings). His personality, his constant eagerness to remaster albums that had plenty of reissues, and his constant, impatient output (Transience, Cover Version..) make an artist I wouldn't care to support.

Well, SW is following the thread of naming his pieces after famous film directors (Harmony Korine, Tinto Brass).

This time he mimics Fellini (8 1/2 - 4 1/2).

But didn't someone record an album about Fellini? Yeah, but it was Fish, he is sooo neoprog, therefore he does not count.

Going to buy this album though. And go to a gig.

After seeing him on the Hand Cannot Erase tour, I'll be sure to see him every time he comes around.  That show was amazing.

On a side note, I hope SW has a little more of a hand in the upcoming Blackfield record.  Man, did Aviv Geffen botch that last one.  Blackfield II is one of my all time faves.

I'm going to see him and his band in Manchester in January, really looking forward to that.

The new album is of course an essential purchase.  I'm of the view that his solo output is much better than the PT material (and I say that as a big PT fan).  I'm hoping to hear some new material at the January gig as I understand a "real" new album is already in the pipeline.

On a side note, I saw Joe Satriani earlier this month.  The show was mindblowing, he is an absolute genius.  However, Marco Minneman is now Satch's drummer and he was simply out of this world, taking the music to a new level.  On his albums Satch's material tends to just noodle along nicely but not with too much aggression,  but MM has really beefed things up.  He was outstanding.

Not a fan of Raven nor Hand but Wilson/PT has always had interesting 'discarded' material so I may still enjoy this who knows.

H.C.E tour was an outstanding show.....living in Seattle we do not get artists like him often or at all, so these are a treat.
I judge PT and SW material on their own, I don't connect the two other than he plays in both. When I want hard driving, more metal SW then I listen to PT.

If this album is 1/2 as good as HCE, I think I'll pass.

I like steven's style to be productive and expand the musical areas. I'm sure that he has also expanded his consciousness several times.
