I really like it personally; sure it's derivative, but I prefer the more traditional sound of bands like Marillion, IQ and Pendragon to the progressive metal genre. There are some undoubted masterworks in the neo prog idiom like 'Misplaced Childhood', 'Script...', 'The Masquerade Overture' and 'Dark Matter', plus some brilliant ones like 'The Wake', 'The Jewel' and 'The Sentinel'.

Yummy!
I always liked neo prog’s no-nonsense formula for delivering goosebumps: aggressive guitar play, emotionally charged melodies, prominent sweeping keyboards and an overall harder edge than symphonic prog. Cheap thrills? Maybe… It’s only knock and knowall but I like it.

Thanks for the recommendation Fan but I think I'll give them a miss. It's not that I don't like their music - I have just come off their site with their excerpts and they sound pretty good. But I'm afraid it's like IQ again in that the drumming goes right through me and severely interferes with my listening. It's the old finger-nails on a blackboard with me. Must be me, I reckon, but the drumming sounds like they have got the cheapest kiddies drum from toys-r-us and put some dried peas for the snare effect. I've tried with IQ (Ever is the worst) and I can't seem to get my audio faculties to put the drumming in the background. Thanks again. Off to give Proto Kaw a try

Not yummy. I must confess that I dislike even the genre leading bands.
Neo prog was the product of a time when the classical prog bands were
on the decline. Ok, there are some good albums, even in the 90s
(Quidam), but not as progressive rock. The early 80s have already
passed, and there are much better prog bands.
In short, it sucks

If you don't like The Masquerade Overture, I'm afraid you don't like neo-prog. That album, aside from maybe Script for a Jester's Tear, Clutching at Straws and Misplaced Childhood, is IMO the best neo-prog has to offer, and deserves to be included in the Top 25 on Progarchives.

People have many pre-concepts about neo-prog. Furthermore, the “experts” had given to this sub-genre a non-accurate definition, specially this part:
“The music holds a much more lush sound than general rock, but lacks the sophistication of truly symphonic progressive bands like Yes or amel. Instrumentally, the bands tend to be characterized by a "noodling" approach that focuses on dynamic solos, and at its best, neo-prog lyrics are deep, insightful, and acerbic. Whether neo-prog is diluted progressive or adventurous pop depends on the point of view of the listener — most progressive rock listeners are likely to find the genre dull and unchallenging, while fans of AOR will find the mix more interesting than most rock bands. Although all of the major bands are still producing albums, the classic era of neo-prog effectively ended when vocalist Fish left Marillion in 1987.”
IMHO, I think:
1) Neo-Prog is located 1,000,000 light years from Pop/AOR, and just around the corner of the “truly symphonic progressive” rock music. 2) Neo-Prog has tons of albums better than “Open Your Eyes” or “Big Generator”. 3) How is possible that “the classic era of neo-prog effectively ended when vocalist Fish left Marillion in 1987”, when 19/25 of the Neo Progressive key albums are edited > 1987 ?
Possibly, the only problem with neo-prog is there are on the road many “Salieris” and just a few “Mozarts” ...

I believe this is not a very accurate definition, some people believe Neo Prog started with A Trick of theTail and nobody can assure when their golden era finished, I would risk to say that with the release of Hybris in the early 90's.
I stay with the shorter and more precise definition from GEPR, :
Neo-Progressive
Symphonic rock done in a typically more simple or commercial format. Also very lush but lacking the complexity of the upper bands.
Bands
Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Aragon, etc. |
Doesn't mention AOR or Genesis influence, not inaccurate or unproved info, just a simple cold musical definition is in us to find more if we feel we can be interested.

Neo-Prog to mean basically means Poppier, slightly less complex than Symphonic Prog. A band like Marillion or Dream Theater (Neo-Prog Metal) characterizes this.

Simple medodies, sure. But "poppier?" Surely not for a good number of Neo-prog songs/bands. And I would say Pendragon (TMO as and example) rivals Yes and perhaps even Genesis in complexity.

Back in 1982 I was giving up on symphonic rock (not called "prog" by then) after the "ATTWT" of Genesis and "Drama" and subsequent albums of Yes (you see I'm a bit older than average here...). Marillion saved the day for me... When I heard Fish sing "So here I am once more..." I was hooked and became a huge fan of them. They carried the torch of symphonic rock through the '80 and for that I'm awfully grateful to them. So for me Neo-Prog is "Yummy" (also IQ I like very much)

I believe we shouldn't mix Neo Prog with Neo Prog Metal, because are different sub-genres, from different decades, Neo Prog is older than Prog Metal (As defined) so it's obviousthat Neo Prog Metal comes long after Neo Prog.
But poppier? I don't think so,
Less complex? surely

On this site:
Porcupine Tree = Space Rock
The Flower Kings = Symphonic Prog
Glass Hammer = Symphonic Prog
...The rest I'm not familiar with. I like all of the bands I mentioned above, but they're not neo-prog. If all or some of the rest are, then that's fine.

I'll follow the race Stonebeard:
- Ars Nova: Japanese Symphonic Prog
- Par Lindh Project: One of the most obscure and elaborate Symphonic Prog bands ever, from the Swedish Symphonic rebirth of the 90's, in some albums a Swedish supergroup that included members of Anglagard plus Roine Stoltz. I would dare to say this Project is Symphonic/Gothic/Prog.
- Gerard: Also Japanese band from the 21st Century, closer to Art Rock than to Neo Prog but with a jazzy touch. Even if some people consider Neo, they are not remotely representative of the sub-genre because too poppy.
- Romantic Warrior: Hey, isn't this the name of a Return to Forever album? if it is, the band is clearly and 100% Fusion. If you are talking about the band Romantic Warrior, it's New Age
- Trespass (Israel): Is a band from Israel clearly influenced by ELO, not Neo Prog either, closer to Symphonic, good band though, their album In Haze of Time has been largely reviewed here. If you're talking about Trespass (Germany), they are also Symphonic with a touch of Grobschnitt, would be very unusual to find 43 minute tracks in Neo Prog.
- Tocatta: Never heard about them, even checked Allmusic and doesn't appear even there.
- Empire: A 100% Italian Symphonic band from the 90's.
So I will also haveto disagree with you Andrew, none of this bands except maybe Glass Hammer and Tocatta (Because I heven't heard them), are Neo Prog, I'll go with Stonebeard this time.

I only disagree in a tiny little point: Marillion is not "almost" good, it is "good" indeed. besides, they kept prog alive almost single-handedly in the '80's (OK, there are also King Crimson and some German bands...) so they deserve a "salute" at least for the Fish era. For Hoghart era: I even can't stand the longer numbers, which were scarce in Fish era...
I could go for some neo-prog recordings in the time of "despair", but there a re hell lot of remnants from the good old '70's, so I wouldn't bother... (I just saw marillion's fugazi album without a sleeve in a second-hand shop, and it was only 1 new Turkish liras (about $0.85!!!) and got it. FYI, other recors I bought were Tangerine dream's rubycon and stratosfear, J. Michel Jarre's Oxygene, Tubular Bells (1), klaus Schulze's Timewind, and Yes' Fragile and Yesterdays. I paid an average of 15 Liras ($12) for each, and I don't regret for a single penny! btw, I got all but Yesterdays in mp3 discs...)
I agree, stebo32... not yummy (so I voted). Gummy bears are more yummy, indeed And so is the lady in your signature (don't anyone tell my wife !!!)
------------- Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

There is yummy neo-prog and un-yummy neo prog. Some neo-prog is the denial of yumminess in itself, some if the personification of yummyhood.
Most neo prog that I like is '80's neo-prog, BTW. I see a progressive decline every next decade.

IMHO, yummy or not yummy, Neo Progressive music has been dreadful called as “Neo” thing provoking this debate. The Neo-Progressive word is just a euphemism crafted by “truly symphonic progressive” 70’s ears, trying to catalog this sub-genre into some kind of inferior level (or “ghetto”). What happen if hereafter we call this music “Post Symphonic Progressive” or something? Dilemma solved… Like it or not, it’s only matter of taste.
BTW: a) Marillion isn’t the only band of this sub-genre, and b) if they are "the premier band of the genre" it depends… as "premier band" possibly... but the first record Neo Progressive created was “And Then There Were Three...” (1978) by the “truly symphonic progressive” band Genesis…
