First big race of the year is currently ongoing, the Daytona 24 hours. 8 Hours in and we've got about 6 cars fighting for the lead.

The side-by-side finish was pretty amazing between the two Corvettes in the GTLM class.

An excellent race, those Corvettes racing to the line and finishing 0.034s apart was nuts and congrats to ESM on an excellent race, Pipo Derani seems to be one hell of a find for sportscar racing.

Interesting to note that the Deltawing was the fastest car out there until it crashed out in the 4th hour.

That sucked because during Katherine Legge's stint, she was tearing it up and making some pretty aggressive moves to move up.

Yeah she was pretty impressive.

A bit of news, Max Chilton has signed for the 4th Ganassi car this year in Indycar and will do the full year. I also predict there will be fewer crashes in F1 this year as Maldonado has lost his seat at Renault and will be replaced by Kevin Magnussen, seems there was a bit of a falling out between PDVSA and Renault and frankly if he's not bringing the money there's no reason to keep Maldonado on over someone like Magnussen.

Was a pretty great finish, and more importantly start to the 2016 season!

LOL @ the Maldonado comment. LOL
Glad to see that bum is out and Mag is in.

I guess another unexpected consequence of low oil prices has been the Venezuela government cant sponsor their terrible pay driver anymore?

^ Yes, I suppose so.

Couldn't follow much of Daytona as I'm not a fan of watching endurance racing, glad to see it was an entertaining race though.
So, if next year Daytona Prototypes are no more...will GrandAm (IMSA now?) run with LMP prototypes only?

I'm pretty determined to watch as many Indycar races as I can this year...with the occasional touring cars (WTCC, TCR) as dessert

In regards to Maldonado, no, PDVSA are/were (we shall see for the future now that he wont be in F1 this year) very much prepared to keep sponsoring him as before. The fall out with Renailt is regarding signage on the car, Renault wanted them to have less space so Total could get more but couldn't come to an agreement regarding how much, so PDVSA wont sponsor them and Pastor gets dropped like a ton of bricks.

The plan at the moment for IMSA next year is for LMP2's to make up the top spot but manufacturers will be allowed to build their own engines rather than the spec Gibson unit and produce bodywork kits for the cars (kind of like the Corvette bodywork that some of the DP's currently have). If the teams go to Le Mans they'll be allowed to run the engines but not the body kits.

A problem that recently came up, though, is that IMSA seem to be pushing for far more freedom in manufacturers designing their own mechanical parts for the cars as well. The feeling is that this may push them away from LMP2 performance and into LMP1 territory which will very likely split any connection between IMSA and the ACO/FIA. A bad move IMO as GrandAm was far to American focused to start with, lacking global crossover definiely hurt the series.

It is sad.  Although, I'd given up a long time ago about this having a happy ending.

So, Tony Stewart's swan song season probably won't be as memorable or celebrated as Jeff Gordon's, and it's also not going to be as successful, unless he pulls a Kyle Busch.  He'll be missing the first few races due to his ATV accident that happened earlier and then surgery that followed.  I guess he fractured one of the vertebra in his back.

^Saw that today.  I'm not even sure who that is, to be honest. LOL

And Brian Vickers has been confirmed to replace Tony Stewart for the Daytona 500!  This has me extremely excited, as I thought we'd never see him in a stock car again.  Hopefully, if his health can hold out (blood clots, etc.), this could maybe land him something more permanent in one of the top 3 series.

Could be a good season, from what we saw in the first Barcelona test I'd say all 11 teams will be able to score points this year.

Yep. Pascal Wehrline was able to lap in the 1:25's around Barcelona in testing, when Stevens qualified in a 1:31 last year. Now the track is faster in winter and you get to use the soft, super-soft and new ultra-soft tyres in testing but there was never a chance in hell of a Manor doing a 1:25 under any circumstances with any tyres last year.

I don't think it's going to get them into the middle of the fight but the gap between Mano and everyone else is going to be measured in tenths not seconds, if we get an unusual race they'll have a very good chance to score points.

As for the field, remember it's bigger this year than it was last as Haas has joined and we're up to 22 cars again.

As for the Penske livery, Montoya and Power will both run that livery this year as it's a Penske Racing 50th Anniversary livery.

Not Motorsport as such but I'll be hoping to get into the 11 seconds soon in a Newage 330bhp Subaru WRX. (Not a time a 330bhp STI or Evo could manage!)

12.6 is my best so far, in damp conditions

Oh sh*t! Been so busy this snuck right up on me.
Epic. Time for 2016!!!
Another season holding out naive, dim hope Rosberg can pull out a titleLOL

Also hoping McLaren used last season's year long test session, (and off season) to whip into shape. That was like having needles shoved in my eyes, I hope for their sake the team is greatly improved, I can't stand another season of seeing Alonso like that.

Q3 really wasnt good, should go back to a top 10 shootout instead of the knockout session we have now. It worked well enough for Q1, though would have been better if Haas and Sauber hadn't messed up with their timing. Q2 could do with a bit more time.

The grid seems pretty close, other than Mercedes, with McLaren looking a good bet to fight for points on a regular basis.

Sebring 12 Hours is about to start, this should be good!

Missed most of Sebring as it got red flagged 2.5 hours in when a huge thunderstorm hit and the trackside workers had to abandon ship due to lightning strikes and I got tired of waiting for it to be restarted. I gather it effectivly turned into the Sebring 9 Hours with the stoppage.

Excellent start to the year with the Aus GP. Ferrari look very racy, I have no idea why they left Vettel and Raikkonen on Super Soft tyres after the red flag, switching to mediums was the obvious choice and could have netted Vettel the victory. Great to see Haas finish 6th on their debut, easily the most convincing debut I've ever seen from a new team since I started watching F1 in 98. Glad that Alonso's OK as well, that was a big one.

Curious some recap analysis, I know Hami started on pole but seems the 1st lap was led by Vettel who held most of the time till Nico took it. Seems like a fun race.

I know the first race is never indicative of the season, but pretty standard results it seems

They go to Baku?! I really haven't been paying attention. Embarrassed I'll blame lack of coverage rather than myself, though.

Sweet news with the schedule. Any reason why they postponed the Malaysia until October? (other than that fact that it always seemed to rain about 30mins after the race ended)

Shame about Alonso. I suppose some injuries had to be expected (I thought he was walking with a slight limp after he got out of the car) but collapsed lungs are serious business. Any time table for return, or still too early?

Yep, going to Baku for it's first ever race, though I refuse to call it the European GP, it's further east than Baghdad! No idea why Malaysia was moved back to October, though it wont be the weather since that'll likely stay the same. It's a street circuit but by the looks of things it's going to be very fast and the second sector through the old city could be quite spectacular.

From what I gather, partially collapsed lung sounds worse than it is, probably closer to bruising than anything else. The worry is g-forces on those broken ribs could make things much worse. He'll have more test before China in 2 weeks but there's no guarantee he'll race there either.

I'm not a fan of the euro GP myself...but I'm glad they found a new place for it. Any idea if this will be a one shot deal? I'll investigate the track, I'm just surprised and kinda happy they choose Baku!

And yeah...probably best to play it safe with Alsono. don't need to do more damage.

Awesome lap from Lewis to take poll, and as predicted that's a new lap record as well. Amzing job from Vandoorne to end up 12th and Pascal Wehrlein to put the Manor 16th ahead of both Saubers and Renault's and a Force India, and to hilight just how much faster the times are this year his 1:32.8 would have put him on the front row last year.

Well, I always thought Azerbaijan was/usually see it put under "Europe" (it is on the correct side of the Ural Mountains) but I grant, it is on the very edge of what could be considered
Looks like a simple though interesting circuit.

Yup, good result for Lewis, another Mercedes 1-2. Can we expect another year of utter dominance? If so, this team has to go on the mantle for best ever, 3 straight years of untouchable status.
Indeed some surprising results in this qualifying.

ShockerLOL

Also I always felt the European GP should go to a new track every year, since ya know...it'd be truly European in that case, and could host some one time/specialty ones, go to an older track, test some new places.
It was later I realized the European GP was actually just a vehicle to capitalize on Schumacher, then Alonso, maniaLOL
That said, cool they are going to Baku, and I would like it to be a one timer so they can try new venues in the future but as you say, all about that $$ especially if gov backed

Actually I think the European GP goes back to the 80's, first run at Brands Hatch in 85 (Mansell's first win) if I remember right. I agree with you about having the European GP movign around every year, would actually be quite cool.

I would be very surprised if Merc don't win both titles this year but Ferrari certainly seem to be very close to them on performance, certainly in race trim at least.

Could have been an amazing fight for the win but Vettel's engine blew on the warm up lap, Raikkonen had a bad start and Hamitlon got nerffed by Botas at turn 1, leaving Rosberg to cruise and collect. Some great racing behin, particularly impressed with Vandoorne and Wehrlein.

Yeah, seems Ferrari isn't too far off at all, but will they consistently be able to battle for wins, or simply occupy a close yet solid 2nd only? We shall see, I wont assume they can compete until I see it.

Indeed, I wonder if the Vandoorne result is a good sign for McLaren, or just a randomly crazy good race. I have to hope McLaren will be better this year, at least consistently scoring points, but the field seems yet again VERY competitive from top to bottom.

Never heard of this Wehrlein but seems he is off to a hot start. Looks like he is from DTM, seems that series is always producing quality drivers!

Yeah, here's hoping we get a more straightforward run from them in China so we can see how they really stack up. Mind you, China has always been a Merc track so....

The McLaren was definitely good this weekend, Button reckons he would have been fighting for a top 6 if his ERS hadn't packed up, he was just cruising behind Grosjean in the early laps.

As the reigning DTM champion Wehrlein was always going to be one to keep an eye on, I loved the way he just got stuck into the Saubers yesterday, and nearly beat them both (and he did beat both Force India's, who had arguably the worst race I've seen from them for years).

No doubt DTM produces some good drivers

At this rate Nico is going to get the title handed to him on a plate. Vettel ruined Ferrari's race, he had no need to dodge Kvyat as there was plenty of space between them and then he hits his team mate! Hamilton seems to have loads of bad luck this year. Bottas runs into him in Bahrain, gearbox penalty for China, ERS failure in qualifying and then gets collected by Nasr who was dodging Raikkonen as he came back onto the circuit. All made for a very entertaining race at least.

Vettel should have taken the inside line so there wouldn't have been a space for Kvyat to try and overtake.

At least it wasn't a complete disaster for Kimi, it looked a lot worse before the safety car.

Oh sh*t, I know this is a 21 race season but this is a pretty great start for Nico, helped out by Hamilton's not so great luck. Long way to go, but I'm very excited by this start! IF he can maintain his usual form, he may have a realistic shot at the title for once. Obviously Lewis can go on some 8 win streak at any time and a falter from Nico wipes it out, but this is a good start.

Forgot about Indycar, Simon Pagenaud is off to a good start himself

Kind of a questionable finish to yesterday's Long Beach GP, as Simon was only issued a warning, which was pretty much a 'good to go' sign, but hey, if it kept Dixy from winning, I'm fine with that.

And Nico IS off to an amazing start, although I still feel like if Lewis' luck turns around, Nico's in trouble.  I don't really care for either driver, but Nico is just fast, while Lewis is fast AND can overtake like no one else.  If Nico has to actually race anyone, he starts to struggle a bit.  At least Ferrari is trying to make it interesting this year, while McLaren is still kind of embarrassing themselves. Ugh.

And I have to say, the racing in ALL series has been pretty good so far this year.  F1 has been interesting, Indy is still doing their thing and NASCAR's low downforce package has made for some great racing so far!  Hope it keeps up!

Well thing is, Lewis is capable of stringing together 4 wins a row without an effort, and during that stretch one DNF erases it all. With a 21 race season it's waaaay too soon for me to say anything more than he's off to a good start, so at least he has some padding and for once isn't the one trailing behind.

Think with Pagenaud is, IDK feels like we've been waiting for him, and he's always there just under the surface..but has yet to jump out and take it. Perhaps this is the year.
I assume, like always, Dixon will be in the hunt JPM will surely be. Power is off to a bit of a poor start but he can win a few and get right in it.
Cool to see Helio still hanging around, I imagine he'll do his usual rack up lots of good finishes, but 1 win and end up 4thLOL

Another Rosberg poll with Hamitlon suffering a PU failure at the end of Q2, at least he starts 10th instead of last this time (bar anything like an overnight engine change). Like I said, at this rate the title is going to be handed to Rosberg on a silver plate.

Wow, 4th straight to start the year for Nico. Still early and Lewis is very much with an easy striking distance, but Rosberg certainly has a decent cushion at least. I feel a smidge more optimistic about his title chances.

Kvyat isn't doing himself any favors today.  The deal in China was just hard racing and Vettel didn't much care for it, but today was just ridiculous.  Just a little too aggressive.

Talladega was crazier than usual today, with multiple cars airborne and quite a few hard hits.  One car getting out front and controlling the air for everyone behind is still an issue, though, because no one could get a run at Kes in the last couple of laps to try and do anything.  So, a lackluster finish to an otherwise crazy race.

I think Kvyat's getting a bit too much flack around the net at the moment. Yes, running into Vettel at Turn 2 was silly but in turn 3 Vettel lifted off in the middle of a flat out corner thats little more than an acceleration zone. With the entire field behind him it's not at all surprising that someone hit him, it's just a shame it was Kvyat again.

BREAKING:  Max Verstappen to replace Daniil Kvyat immediately.  Absolutely ridiculous move, IMO.  In China, he makes a brilliant move and scores a podium and then yes, the next race, he got in over his head and made some bad moves.  It happens, he's young with a lot of talent, and he's definitely not the only one to ever make mistakes.  Verstappen is just as aggressive, or even more so.  Something tells me that Red Bull wanted Max in and found any excuse they could to demote Daniil.
