Thought this could be a funny yet slightly perverse idea for a thread  Italy - Fun fact no. 1 If you refuel at an Italian petrol station, you will pay a number of excises on each litre of fuel: you will be delighted to know that through these taxes you will help fund the colonial war against the Ethiopian Empire, which ended in 1936.

Nil novo sub sole. We have a similar thing in the Netherlands: het kwartje van Kok, an additional excise on gasoline as a compensation for economic stagnation. The measure was taken in 1991 and said to be temporary. But they never abolished it until this day... -------------

Bread is a staple food and cannot be taxed. BUT in a bakery a single tart is taxed at the 13% filthy Canadian HST but anything over the quantity of six is not subject.

It's a fair point-- I know someone who plans to buy and renovate in his native Detroit and since he's doing most of the work, he could end up with property that will increase in value. Or not. But he knows the city and culture and it could be the best buy he's ever made. Portland Oregon's name was decided with a coin toss to decide whether to name
the place after Portland, Maine or Boston, Massachusetts. The then small
community was initially known as "The Clearing" because of the many
trees were cut for development. In 1843, Asa Lovejoy of Boston,
Massachusetts purchased half of the 640-acre area for 25 cents and later
Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine purchased the other half. Both
Pettygrove and Lovejoy wished to rename "The Clearing" after their
respective hometowns. In 1845 this controversy was settled with a coin
toss which Pettygrove won in a series of two out of three tosses,
thereby naming the community 'Portland'. The coin used for this
decision, now known as the Portland Penny, is on display in the
headquarters of the Oregon Historical Society.
