I've listened to a fair deal of Eloy and the full PF discography but never really ran into anything else that would capture the sort of Sci-fi Space Odyssey feel like on Echoes. Especially the buildup in the second part. Ideas?

Hi,

I do not find that Eloy compares well to PF at all, and I do not hear/listen to PF when enjoying a lot of Eloy's music ... but here goes, more or less.

Jane is Eloy's sister band, so to speak. Only Fire, Earth Air and Water are all long cuts, but they develop some longer cuts nicely.

The only other bunch that I would consider "sci-fi" would be the Cosmic Couriers stuff, although many folks say that is just stoned stuff, and not really anything else, but there are many things in there that are nice, even if some of them seem to sound "dated". It's hard to take "Galactic Supermarket" seriously, but the music in it is very nice, for example ... and the "idealism" in it, never bothered me. Ash Ra Tempel, and then AshRa, though I can already hear some folks say ... "where's the lyrics?"

Far East Family Band

Focus

Not sure this will help at all ... but, good luck

Oh, that buildup on Echoes... I really love it, and they never got it right live... that's the reason I still like the studio version better than the live ones... even if mostly the rest of the song is better on the live versions. However, I don't think I can find something like that build-up on other albums, still you might like to check out Ayreon's "The Dream Sequencer". Perhaps also Porcupine Tree's live album "Coma Divine". Or Riverside's song "The Same River".

Well you're right, it doesn't. But Ocean is still the closest I've come to that sort of sound, however distant it might be. I need to check out the others though. Thanks.

Got an album in mind? Their discography is quite daunting.

^ It is indeed.   Generally their years on Virgin are suggested for the classic sound ~ Phaedra, Rubycon.   Not always as dark as 'Echoes' but with a similar direction into deepspace.   You may have to spend & spin a bit before you find something that suits your bill, but half the fun is the quest anyway.

Gong's "Isle of Everywhere / You never Blow Your Trip Forever" suite reminds me of "Echoes", including the fade-out at the end. Of course there are musically differences between Pink Floyd and Gong, but there is a certain similarity as well. And it is definitely spacey taking you to the planet Gong.

Floyd was such a deeply original band no one could recreate what they did.   Few bothered even trying.   That's why they were great and why Meddle is on the short list of all-time rock classics.   Psych, prog, pop, blues-rock, didn't matter; everyone loved Meddle.   Just like everyone loved The Yes Album whether they ever bought another Yes LP or not.

Ah, the search for PF-like epic music. There's a lot of music I love from the same genre, but I gave up comparing with them. I think it helped that they had the top quality production at the time. I was listening to Pollen yesterday and wondering how great it could be if their albums had a better production... and a better singer LOL I love Phaedra and Rubycon, but it has no Rock or lyrics (the listener creates his own story Wink). Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, it's just really different from Echoes.

Try Ozric Tentacles - and of course, Hawkwind's 'Space Ritual' (supplemented by Bob Calvert's space poems...)

Hawkwind's "In Search of Space" has a Sci-fi story, but I can't read anything from this tiny booklet Confused

Although Hawkwind is probably a good rec, I didn't necessarily mean "sci-fi" in lyrical concept per se; Rush 2112 is scifi as well but its quite different. Echoes has a sort of "Scifi atmosphere" which I was originally referring to, although no harm can be done either way ;)

A few albums that give me a strong Echoes vibe throughout or in some songs, even without a sci-fi lyrical theme:

- Novalis, Sommerabend
- Emeraude, Geoffroy
- Torga Ostera, Queda Ascendente

Wise suggestion.  Ash Ra Tempel's INVENTIONS FOR ELECTRIC GUITAR, Amon Duul 2's YETI or DANCE OF THE LEMMINGS get the highest marks from me.  For deep space, try Tangerine Dream's ATEM or Klaus Schulze's MOONDAWN or BODY LOVE, Vols. 1 & 2.

I was thinking perhaps something from Mike Oldfield... I mean, he won't sound like Pink Floyd, but just like himself, still he's got some beautiful moments that I love as much as what's done in echoes, with soft melodies, and build-ups and so on... and he does take his time with his music. Being particularly sci-fi in concept and sound, perhaps the one to check out would be "Songs from Distant Earth"... though his first 4 albums are also absolute essentials, and might have something from what you're looking for.

Also, some Alan Parson's Project may have some such moments, specially on their first 2 albums. Genesis Ch1 V32 (from I Robot) may be the closest example... I really love that musical moment... too bad it seems to be building up to somethin incredible, and then... well, it's the end of the album. The title track from that album is also pretty cool. And from Tales of Mystery and Imagination, "The Fall of the House of Usher" (for me not the orchestral part of the song, but the band part is just beautiful), as well "A Dream Within a Dream" (which blends with "The Raven"). Oh yeah, and since I'm with Alan Parsons, there's also another short moment, the intro song for the album (and song) "Eye in the Sky"... Sirius is also a very beautiful instrumental moment.

Ommadawn and Tubular Bells are among my favorite records, especially Ommadawn. Echoes still quite different, I think. I'll have to check out Alan Parsons, that's for sure.

Not trippy like what the OP was talking about, but yeah, Pestilence and Voivod are great sci-fi options.

This 17 minute track has some similarities, structurally: psychedelic middle section, buildup and back to the main tune.

I should check Gong out. Echoes is my favorite PF song so it's only logical.

Our next album - Temple of the Moon - is planned to have (unsurprisingly) a very spacey feel. We're using very much the same equipment as Tangerine Dream did in 1974.

Test video for the title track.

I went and bought some recommended Tangerine Dream but I gotta say, its not doing it for me right now. There's a lot of soundscapes and cool ambients but perhaps its a little too "ambienty". Could be great when reading or travelling or playing video games, though. I'll keep Nectar and other recs in mind!

IMHO the first 2 Future Kings of England albums could be as close as one is about to get to that Floyd period of Echoes.....other than some of the Causa Sui material.

Cool...so happy I helped turn someone else on to Pulsar!  Along with Ange they're my 2 fave French bands. Pollen/Strands/Halloween are all magical...their albums after reuniting (Gorlitz and Memory Traces) are good too but nothing like their classic 70's trinity.  Halloween was actually my 1st exploration into French prog...it's fitting that they come up in this thread as my old prog friend who got me into Pulsar always referred to them as "The French Floyd" LOL

Yeah, of course those Oldfield albums are different... still, I might say that a lot of what I like from those albums are the same things that I love about Echoes. However, if you haven't heard "Songs from Distant Earth" yet, it might be a little bit closer to what you want (only a bit, don't expect a copy). As for Alan Parsons, it's got some moments I love that might have some similarity to that, but still don't expect anything remotely close to Echoes there... their music is closer to pop with prog characteristics... mostly shorter songs and such. Now, I just thought of another song, though of course you may already know it, but the middle instrumental section from Yes' "Awaken" is also very ethereal and keyboard driven.

Hello, as it's been said you really should check out more ambient music. Echoes is one of the most important roots for this music, certainly as important as Eno's "Music for airports", and also Schulze's and Tangerine Dream's albums.

For example, try an album like this one, it's particularly classic :
http://www.discogs.com/Jonn-Serrie-The-Stargazers-Journey/release/457683" rel="nofollow - https://www.discogs.com/Jonn-Serrie-The-Stargazers-Journey/release/457683
(maybe it's a pity not to find John Serrie on Progarchives, especially because of this album ?)

There is a radio show (every Saturday night since more than 30 years) originally dedicated to the deep space feeling you seem to talk about, including many ambient artists and the web site is worth a visit  : http://starsend.org/" rel="nofollow - http://starsend.org/

And as other bands did, I take permission to indicate one of my albums :
http://jazzcomputer.bandcamp.com/track/elsewhere" rel="nofollow - https://jazzcomputer.bandcamp.com/track/elsewhere
It's a very long track giving its title to the album, with lots of things coming directly from Echoes... I hope you'll have a nice time listening to this track. You shoud also try the second part of the latest double album, http://jazzcomputer.bandcamp.com/album/many-sides-of-music-the-ambient-way" rel="nofollow - https://jazzcomputer.bandcamp.com/album/many-sides-of-music-the-ambient-way

Agreed about Alan Parsons being reminiscent of Eloy.  I was trying to describe Eloy to my brother today, and I mentioned bits of The Wall and Alan Parsons.  I'm on this thread because I am looking for more stuff that is sort of like Eloy.

Try "In Extremis" by the studio band Days Between Stations.  It features Tony Levin, Rick Wakeman, and is the last recording of Peter Banks.
