Of course, his voice fits the old GENESIS perfectly, of course Cool  Strangely enough, I never was interested in his later career Sleepy.

Many others great voices, Gary Brooker, David Byron, Francesco di Giacomo Jimmy Spitaleri, Michele Bavaro, Jon Anderson, Greg Lake, Brad Delp, John Wetton, Paul Rodgers, James Dewar, etc. And Les Holroyd, John Lees and Woolly Wolstenholme of course Cool.

Although PG is great, he is not my favourite singer. For the dramatic qualities, it's Peter Hammill. For the beauty of the voice, probably Aldo Tagliapietra (Le Orme). There are many great voices in italian prog, like Francesco di Giacomo (Banco del mutuo soccorso - R. I. P.), Vittorio de Scalzi (New Trolls), Jimmy Spitaleri (Le Orme), or rough charismatic voices like Demetrio Stratos (Area) and Alvaro Fella (Jumbo).

I recall an interview with an audio engineer about how certain records from the past would be done in the recording climate of today. He thought PG was pretty good (the subject was Sledge hammer) but now he's have Gabriel with some auto tune.

No, he's not my favourite singer, not even my favourite Genesis singer. Nor my favourite Genesis lyricist though to be fair I don't a have favourite there either...

And try as I might I could not connect much with his post Genesis career though I do try still. Sort of more respected than truly liked. I think he belongs best inside that song writing team environment - results wise. But he may like being his own man and heaven knows he's got a big career.

One of my favourite CHARACTERS in prog but not a favourite SINGER.  I think he was able to compensate for what his voice per se lacked with his dramatization but as uduwudu put it, without a whole ensemble to support such an approach, it wouldn't work. Thom Yorke sounds way more powerful than Gabriel on his cover of Street Spirit and that just about says it all.

Dramatization is an important part of singing. It's not just all about the voice. You can have an angelic voice and sound horrible if you don't carry over the emotion.

Dramatization is an important part of singing. It's not just all about the voice. You can have an angelic voice and sound horrible if you don't carry over the emotion.

It's not ALL about the voice but the voice is still an important part of it and when I say voice, I refer not just to a tone (and definitely not to an angelic tone) but the power and possibilities of a given voice.  And it's not all about dramatization either.  You don't need dramatization to sing Still Got The Blues and I guarantee any number of rock singers would sing that song better than Gabriel.  Why?  Because if you strip away the crutches of epic structure and strong lyrical content especially in a narrative form (like Musical Box), he doesn't have much else to stand on.  When I talked about dramatization, I meant that Gabriel relies very heavily on working in the context of prog epic drama.  Forget Still Got The Blues, he wouldn't be able to sing Squonk as well as Collins because he lacks even that extent of throw in his voice.

We seem to have a different understanding of "dramatize". For you it apparently means "to express oneself in a dramatic or exaggerated way". For me it means "to express or represent vividly, emotionally or strikingly" (both definitions taken from http://dictionary.reference.com/" rel="nofollow - http://dictionary.reference.com/ ). Try singing "Still got the Blues" without the latter; it will sound ridiculous.

The question is what role, if any, would Gabriel have in such a set up?  A big part of what made Gabriel sound great was his own lyrics.  Even he didn't seem to enjoy singing Banks' lyrics (see Firth of Fifth, he practically swallows the word scalpel because that line sounds so awkward).  So if Gabriel had had a Pete Sinfield like role, Collins would have been alright. But with Banks lyrics, Collins would have been uncomfortable singing more epic/dramatized material (see All in A Mouse's Night) and pushed the band to a more mainstream sound much earlier than it actually happened.

There actually is no "scalpel" in the lyrics of "Firth of Fifth". The line you probably mean is "like a cancer growth is removed by skill".

I don't have a particular favourite, but I do like Gabriel. Amongst male vocalists, Robert Wyatt may not have great vocals, but I love his style.

I guess I do tend to favour female vocalists on the whole. Edda Dell'Orso, Brigitte Fontaine, Pascale Son of Cos and Catherine Ribeiro get special mention from me.

I tend to prefer Gabriels's vocals when he went "solo" to his vocals with Genesis (maybe I'm generalising too much). I prefer him to Collins due to the character in Gabriel's vocals (character often trumps technical ability to me, though I'd rather Trump have more technical ability and I don't like his character at all).

No. Peter Hammill is my favourite singer. Generally speaking, I focus on the music in preference to the lyrics, largely treating the singer as another instrument. But with Van der Graaf Generator, the lyrics and how they're sung is an extra dimension to the music that I generally don't get with other artists.

I should remark that I have a fondness for distorted vocals, for example "21st Century Schizoid Man".

Voted Yes

(as in do I know anyone I like more = no)

It is a difficult question because vocals is a lot of stuff and very hard to compare.

Bowie versus Gabriel versus Nina Simone, it is different worlds.

I’ll be a rare vote for “yes” as he is my favorite singer. Jon Anderson number 2.

Peter Gabriel isn't my favourite singer, and 38 isn't my favourite number.

No.

Peter Nicholls, Damian Wilson, Francis Dunnery, Einer Sollberg and Devin Townsend would probably be my top 5😎

I know it's not cool to say this - especially on a prog site - but I prefer Cliff Richard. Embarrassed

Between him and Jon Anderson and I have him just ahead of Jon, so yes, he's my favourite singer.

Hehe, funny poll, with a predictable outcome. Love his work, but no. (I actually think I'm incapable of singling out just one favourite singer or musician, there are always many)
