If the poll is asking who I really believe could do no wrong and utter magical words 100% of the time I'd have to vote for...none of the above.  If my vote goes to who did the most right and dished out the highest % of prog wisdom it would be between Zappa & Fripp.  Since I've read Zappa's autobio several times I know his strong and weak points well and while I'd love it if Fripp wrote one as well, I have to go with what I've read in his many interviews and tour journals.  Zappa get's my vote Wink

Depends. On this website I'd say Zappa, Fripp, Lennon

To the wider world I'd say Patton, Steven Wilson, Roger Waters, Tool (mostly Maynard)

Patton I imagine has many people who either dislike Mr. Bungle or Faith No More, Everyone has an album or two they pretend Devin Townsend didn't release though he's definitely moving towards deification, a lot of people disliked Neil Peart's drumming on Burning for Buddy, Mikael Akerfeldt pissed off fans when he decided to stop writing with death growls, Portnoy still has people bitching about him leaving/being kicked out/whatever happened of Dream Theatre, Omar R-L disappointed many when he disbanded TMV or with how long between albums Bosnian Rainbows has been or with Antemasque or with his involvement with Le Butcherettes.

It's extremely hard poll for me. I pick Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and runners-up are Robert Fripp and Mike Patton.

Devin's music is great, but he seems to be becoming a kind of mystical guru at times. Not that I hold it against him. At least he seems unpretentious about it, unlike Zappa who couldn't control his disdain for the rest of the human race every time he opened his mouth (still love his music though).

I grew up in the US but my mom is English, so I'm usually able to see both sides of the coin when it comes to potentially ambiguous sarcasm and its reception on the part of new and old worlders.

It definitely seems like Peart, Portnoy, and Wilson are the ones that get constant and extravagant praise heaped upon them the most.

Deified by whom, the critics? That would probably be Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. As a group, The Beatles certainly, but not separately.

Of the ones listed, none of them come even close except perhaps John Lennon, but even he had some questionable albums in the 70s. On this board, Robert Fripp, but nowhere else on the Internet.

Chuck Schuldiner
Not a single bad album. He was infact improving with every subsequent album. Those last 3 Death albums still sound as fresh as ever..also the one under Control Denied. The ultimate composer, riffmaster and soloist. Man! those riffs... The Alexander of Extreme Metal.
Did nothing wrong except leaving us too early.
RIP CHUCK!!!

True that. Chuck definitely left his mark, and luckily his fans (counting myself) don't seem to have such an unhealthy obsession with his person and focus on his music. He gave the impression of being a really unassuming, focused guy.

I'd go with Pete Townshend. Although he's basically an old creep, his words are actually quite clever.

As a matter of interest, why do you think he is an old creep?
