I consider Colors and Ocean as top albums of Eloy, but Nektar beats them in my opinion with a number of great works such as Remember the Future, Down to Earth, Recycled and Magic Is a Child.

Eloy easily, always found Nektar to be mediocre at best. I like their song King of Twilight, but even then, the Iron Maiden cover blows it out of the water.

Tough choice...

I love Recycled more than any one Eloy album...but I love my 4 Eloy albums more than my 2 Nektar albums...

Hmmm...I'll go quality over quantity and go with Nektar LOL

easily Eloy.  Their peak period went from 1973-1982.  Although in that stretch of 9 albums, there are 2 I don't like too much (Floating and Power and the Passion), lots of people rate them highly, and the 7 others are almost all great IMO, with "Silent Cries.." just being good, but many people love that one.  Ocean 2 (1998) was almost as good as the peak period albums.
Nektar are pretty mediocre IMO, except for "Remember the Future" and a few songs from other albums, notably the aforementioned "King of Twilight"

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I'm a big fan of two of Nektar's albums but when it comes to Eloy there's just way more records that fit in that category. So Eloy it is.

There's an Iron Maiden cover of King of Twilight? My word, and righteous.

Nektar for A tab in the Ocean, Remember the Future and Recycled

I'm afraid I'm another person who isn't terribly keen on the vocalist of Eloy.

For me Frank Bornemann isn't that great but he isn't so bad he's unbearable. He leans more to the memorable voices category for prog. I thought his voice fit best on Ocean but needed more oomph on their other albums.

I don't think I ever did, or at least they didn't make an impression if I did.
As for the 1980s, there was very little prog radio and what there was probably didn't feature Eloy a whole lot, even though their first 3 1980s albums were all excellent

I understand about Franks singing voice, though Eloy`s music is great, and it makes Franks voice more better, pity really about his voice, but, i must say, that there is alot of singing voices out there not just in prog, rock or any music style, is awful, etc Celine dion is awful as nothing but a worble and same with whitney houston and few others, so it matter of taste.

ELOY  in my point of view is the which have a more 'digestible' style of psychedelic space prog .

In the seventies I discovered Eloy before I discovered Nektar. While I've always liked both bands I have to go with Nektar in the long run.

This one is a hard decision for me too.  I've been a Nektar fan for a long time (with particular emphasis on Remember The Future) and my knowledge of Eloy is not as extensive. So for the record I'll give a tentative nod to Nektar ...
[ On a side note: I'm a Spotify listener - and I often get advisories from them when new material from some rap group (Deadcough) named Eloy becomes available. Anyone else? Sacrilege! ]

Nektar, though it is close. I like the first few Eloy albums, but after "Dawn" they become too pompous for my taste. and the extreme German accent of Frank Bornemann annoys me

I think his accent lessened with time.  I think his voice fits the music well.  Agreed they were pompous, but, in their case, I love the pomposity

Hmmm didn't really get into Eloy till much later but fell under the spell of Nektar at the start so its Nektar for me.

The same exact opposite for me Smile

It seems that Frank Bornemann's German accent can be a disturbance for some native English speakers. Fortunately, this is not the case for me. As one of our French humorist said: "I prefer when the signer sings in another language. It's more disturbing when she/he sings in my native tongue". Big smile

Anyway, I counted:
Eloy:    17 votes
Nektar: 21 votes

wow that's shocking.  To me Nektar was a minor group that couldn't keep it together for more than one very good album (Remember the Future) and Eloy was one of the most accomplished symphonic/space bands on the continent.  They also were unabashedly prog when it was WAAAY out of fashion.  Their early 1980s albums  were among their best.  And this is the thanks they get!  Shocked

I'm quite surprised too.
Eloy is one of my favorite prog bands and I consider they brought something new to the space-rock genre, their own touch of fantasy, even when prog was dying in the late 70's and early 80's.

Even after several listens of their first albums, I can't really get into Nektar.

Eloy fans, let's flood this thread with votes! The match is not over yet. Smile
BTW, if you enjoy early Eloy, I recommend Spermüll - s/t.

Consider this another vote for Nektar. Absolutely classic group, with at least four distinctly great albums.

As a German living in the UK I discovered that most non-Anglophone people hate the accent of their own compatriots, because it reminds them subconsciously of how they themselves get the pronounciation wrong at times. So I can see why Bornemann's accent troubles Jean (who I think is German) and me at least as much as the native speakers.
Still my vote is for Eloy. Once I was a big fan, then I hated them for some time, but I have rediscovered their best stuff (which in my opinion in the run of albums starting from Colours).

Just got Nektar's Journey to the Centre of the Eye yesterday and heard for the first time!  Enjoyed it, a little bit of their early raw psych energy and in some of the songs you can hear where they were headed.  Need more listens.

By the way I had earlier voted for Nektar in this thread.

Instead of Eloy vs Nektar, I'll choose Ocean vs Journey To The Centre Of The Eye.

Although I think Ocean is a great album, I prefer Journey To The Centre Of The Eye.
