Cynic for me, ahead of Death. I like Atheist but not as much as the other two.

Atheist >>>> Death >>>>>>>>>>>>> Cynic

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

I have not heard a note by any of these, but this must change in the near future.

Having discovered Cynic on stage, but not being impressed (I had the feeling to hear a metal version of Pat Metheny) and never having been hooked by the various tracks from Atheist I may have heard throughout my exploration of back-catalogues, I keep sticking to Chuck Schuldiner's works (even if The Sound of Perseverance was a bit too much technical).

Going with Atheist on the strength of their early 90's stuff.

Listen to Symbolic, Unquestionable Answer, and Focus, in that order.

Well, I flipped through these with my result being DEATH - Symbolic sounded pretty awesome. I'd like this on vinyl.
ATHEIST - Unquestionable Prescence sounds decent and not too blown away with CYNIC. But as I said, just sampled the albums. And I still find Meshuggah and Gorguts heavier still.

^ It's not that easy finding listenable stuff that is heavier than Gorguts.

^ 'Listenable' indeed    Gorguts have some crushing melodies, but they are melodies !! And Lemay's growl is more like a ROAR !! I never realised (until a couple years ago) just how technical the music of this genre is. It's always the vocal that is hardest for me to take. I'm getting used to it though.

Human and The Sound of Perseverance are a couple of my other favorite Death albums that are well-wroth checking out if you enjoyed Symbolic. Leprosy is a great album too, as long as you're into old school death metal.

I chose that word carefully LOL

Yeah man, a big chunk of death metal falls under the technical category, especially the newer stuff. Once you're passed the harsh vocals, you can find some pretty incredible music underneath... Oh and I'm glad you enjoyed Symbolic btw Thumbs Up. It's one of my absolute favs.

I've often thought that these guys, in general, are just coke'd up dudes with anger issues, but they are, most likely, the cleanest, most focussed musicians on the planet. You just can't play this style out of your head. This is like the Prog-fusion of Metal. Metallica, though pioneers, are pretty basic.....

But the bands in this poll were more influenced by '80s Megadeth. I voted Cynic and consider the other two about equal but not quite as good as Cynic.
