Hey there fellow proggers, I am a big fan of progressive rock and know all about the classic stuff (King Crimson, Genesis, Elp, Floyd, etc.). I have recently discovered the album 'Hero and Heroine' by the band Strawbs and I literally ascend to heaven during that instrumental passage in the first song called 'Autumn' with the heavy bass and synth after the 1 minute mark. I was wondering if any of you had recommendations for me. If so, go right ahead. |

If you already like the classic stuff, try to get into the more 'obscure' substyles, like Krautrock(Amon Duul II, Neu!, Faust, Can), Zeuhl(Magma, Eider Stellaire, Eskaton, Shub-Niggurath), RIO(Art Zoyd, Universz Zero, Frank Zappa, Cardiacs) and listen :D -------------

| Thank you for your recommendations. I am already familiar with Magma and I'm the biggest Zappa fanboy but I will check those other bands out. However, I was mostly looking for emotionally rich instrumental songs/passages not quite like the "obscure" stuff you proposed. But yeah I guess I may be looking for something too specific to ask for other's opinion so I'll have to keep exploring. Still, thanks again for your suggestions. |

This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for, thank you. I already own and adore 3 of PFM's albums (Per Un Amico, Storia Di Un Minuto and Isola Di Niente) and the climactic synth passages in the two songs you've mentionned with the addition of 'Il Banchetto' really represent what I prefer in prog rock. ------------- "Larks' tongues. Welcome to PA. Autumn is not only unique in it's song structure but also of John Hawken's use of mellotron in the song. I would stick with Strawbs for a bit before moving on. The albums Grave New World and Ghosts, both considered prog classics, also feature mellotron and some more of Dave Cousins incredible songwriting. ------------- This message was brought to you by a proud supporter of the Deep State. |

and welcome back to you Steve! I agree with all that but also recommend their "Bursting at the Seams" album. Plenty of mellotron there too, with more straightforward melodic songs and a few epics. Perhaps Barclay James Harvest as well? "Once Again", "Everyone is Everybody Else", and "Octoberon" are all highly recommended. Sebastian Hardie's "Four Moments" also comes to mind

know about and appreciate. This band featured three members, the singer, guitarist and bassist, I believe, that all played mellotron on different tracks. I also highly recommend this album....the second one from Fantasy , though the first is also very good...but Alanderie is an epic mellotron track and well written imho. ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. Haquin |

That is indeed sublime - to bad the tune ends in a slightly too (football)stadium-friendly singalong manner to my tastes. Love moments like that in prog. I think (early) Ange has a quite few of those moments: Earth & Fire's magnum opus should/could please: also Celeste and perhaps Arachnoid: As much as I love this stuff its been a long time since I've listened actively to it, but I think I know what you mean. -------------

doing fine, thanks! Yeah Witchwood is a great prog folk album. I just love the bonus cut "Keep the Devil Outside" that seems a couple of years ahead of what they were doing at the time. What about the oft maligned Tai Phong. OK the first few minutes are a bit syrupy, but hang on for the ending! I especially love the way he repeats "Peace" just before the heavenly string synth kicks in |
