I got the Passion Play box set and was playing around with some tracks from those albums and the 2002 version of War Child I have lying around. I ended up making a playlist of songs from those three albums based on the sequence Tull had with the Château tapes in the form of a 2 LP set: Side 1 Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day / War Child / Queen And Country / Ladies / Glory Row / Saturation / Sealion Side 2 Animalee (First Dance) / Law Of The Bungle (Part One) / Tiger Toon / Law Of The Bungle (Part Two) / Bungle In The Jungle / The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles Side 3 Overseer Overture / Paradise Steakhouse / Back Door Angels / Critique Oblique (Part 1 and an edit of Part 2) / Only Solitaire Side 4 Quartet / Rainbow Blues / Scenario / Audition / Left Right / No Rehearsal / The Third Hoorah Any thoughts on this and what do you think was the best version of the Passion Play project? ------------- He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball! |

Audition and Left right are awesome remixed ------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock. |

I had to go with War Child - for the very reason that Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day thereon is perhaps the finest tune in the entire Tull cannon - and I could just never get into A Passion Play, don't know just why ... |

Chateau has Critique Oblique (which is an excellent song) and War Child has Skating away (which has amazing lyrics) and The third Hoorah (which is the best of the album), but A Passion Play is a more complete work so I choose that. |

I've always felt, with the amount of excellent studio tracks available at the time, A Passion Play should've been a double album. I think that putting songs like "Skating Away" and "Only Solitaire" in their proper perspective along with the APP material would have only enhanced the album, rather than the hodgepodge feel of them being plopped onto War Child.

IMO, A Passion Play is Tull's best album and is a strong candidate for the best record ever conceived...but I do think The Hare diminishes it just a tiny bit. ------------- Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Get the Warchild box. Good Godmother is one of my fave Tull songs now. Audition and Left Right remixed are also up there with my fave Tull songs ------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. I got solely for the Palmer orchestrations. Those are okay, though I like the little extra bits in "Pan Dance". Also, since I found out "March The Mad Scientist" was recorded during War Child, I decided to put it between "Paradise Steakhouse" and "Back Door Angels" in my playlist. ------------- He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball! |

My favourite (from the above) will always be the always living be puzzle of A Passion Play. When I bought the 2013 boxset, it was a dream come true. I do agree with some of the commentaries above that it would perhaps better to see the whole scenario, but admire all this work in pieces also have some magic. ------------- - From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. |
