Now for something completely different!
Octopus is by far the greatest Gentle Giant album in my opinion. Not a single song on that album is bad, in fact every single one is......stellar. But of all of the winners The Boys In The Band is by far my favorite song on the album and by the band overall. The middle guitar-only part in it always sends shivers down my spine with how good it is. Seriously one of the greatest songs ever.

I'm going to have to go with an unsurprising vote, Panurge.

All classics but Knots was my first love and attention getter and still stands out

For me the band was already loosing it's magic with this release (I much prefer their first 2 albums), but I guess I would have to choose The Advent of Panurge.

1. Knots 2. The Advent of Panurge 3. Dog's Life Amazing album, a very personal bond with this one for me.

Great album but only my fourth GG-favorite. I like their "straightforward" material best here. The rich, otherworldly atmosphere I love so much on their previous albums is best represented on these three imo:
The Advent of Panurge
Raconteur Troubadour
Think of Me With Kindness
- the rest of the material points forward to the colder, static and sometimes a little forced feel of their next four classics.
Boys in the Band and Knots are still amazing too though.

Far from my favourite GG. The Boys in the Band gets the vote.

My vote goes to River, though Octopus is brilliant all the way through. My first taste of this band in the mid-90's - immaculate Vertigo 'swirl' vinyl - $15 !!

The only GG album I like. Its between Panurge and River...I'll go for Panurge.

One of my favourites, all stellar songs indeed, the consistency makes it hard to rank...
Today:
Knots
The Advent Of Panurge
The Boys In The Band
Raconteur Troubadour
Think Of Me With Kindness
A Cry For Everyone
Dog's life
River

Not GG's best, IMO (that would be Free Hand), but really, really close. My vote goes to The Advent of Panurge.

One of my favorite bands, and one of my favorite albums of all time. I can't choose one over the other. This album I prefer to see it as a unit; all pieces being essential to the whole concept. I can't vote for a single song.

A Cry for Everyone, especially seeing it live with Derek mimicking the synths ! WOW!

My feelings as well, my least favourite of their first six or so. Still an easy pick as I really dig the song "The Boys In The Band".
------------- "The wind is slowly tearing her apart"
"Sad Rain" ANEKDOTEN

Though Octopus is my fourth favorite GG album, "Raconteur, Troubadour" still blows me away with its originality.

It's my fifth favourite Gentle Giant album.
My ranking:
1. Acquiring the Taste 2. Three Friends 3. Gentle Giant 4. In a Glass House 5. Octopus 6. Free Hand 7. Power and the Glory 8. Interview
Later studio albums I'd rather not mention.
Of the tracks, I vote "Advent of Panurge". My second choice would be "Think of Me With Kindness".

I won't argue with that. I do however still prefer the atmosphere, warmth and playfulness on their first quartet of albums - which is why I revisit them more often.

Raconteur, Dog and Boys are awesome. Not a big fan of the other songs. Octopus is weak compared the Acquiring, Three, Glass and Free
------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.
