Looking for stuff that's atmospheric, somewhat drone-y, ethereal, lot of beauty and texture, etc.
Help a brother out

Also, I don't really want to "own" this thread, but instead just benefit from it. Feel free to use it for any sort of discussion on post-rock generally, but it would be nice to get some recs/discussion on what I'm after in particular.

This guy is really good, Pat. I might start with "This is for our sins" as the most realized. Going from memory, Migratory Patterns might be the most drone-ey along with Ambient Songs as his most earnest guitar album.

Hi there foxy Pat
You may want to check out Watter's debut and sole album This World. It's the drummer off Slint together with Grails' Zak Riles but there are also other guests joining, Tony Levin fx. Atmospheric, glacial, oceanic and immensely blue.

Could this work? Kind of a combination of british electronic folk like (so-called hauntology) that's filled with washes of thick mellotron and gentle melodies. Very far from GY!BE but packed with atmosphere. Very soothing. Maybe I'm just recommending an album that may not fit the description at all because I like it so much. But hey Tortoise's debut is kinda quirky and they're the ones that started it - more or less:

The opening "epic" and Of Hogben's Hill are my favorites.
- not much drone to be found

Yeah, if anything I'm probably looking more on a post-metal part of the spectrum, although this is good stuff. Interestingly, the Lowercase Noises album (This is For Our Sins) had a lot of folk elements as well (thanks Jim).

So, to make my own contribution, here's an album just released a few months ago that I'm really enjoying.
It's The Bones of a Dying World by If These Trees Could Talk.
2. I'm sure you love the jazz components (are you the guitar player?), but to be honest, I'd also love a straight ambient album from you, because you really create some wonderful soundscapes.

This band has a tendency to start out mellow and progress to a fuller sound.

I know Desert Overcrowded has been mentioned and it's a great album.
These two tracks are from the 2010 self titled EP (40 minute EP?)

These guys are awesome - have they ever been suggested for PA?
I don't believe they have.
Here's a few more bands you may enjoy that we added within the last few years:

A couple of tracks from the new Russian Circles album released last month.
These guys are usually on the heavier side of the scale but they can also be mellow.

More the latter than the former, but even then I could do without the vocals.
