"Third" is actually 1/4 vocal album. Can't vote at the moment since I like them all. From Zappa's instrumental catalogue I prefer "The Grand Wazoo".

Third has lyrics. I'll join the crowd and say The Snow Goose. Replace The Inner Mounting Flame with Birds of Fire, and I'd vote Mahavishnu Orchestra, although incorporating jazz fusion entails bringing in Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis... Obviously lots of other great instrumental prog albums in general, a number of them better than The Snow Goose.

The Snow Goose is THE best album of all time, not just the best instrumental album.

Hamburger Concerto is also excellent, but not strictly totally instrumental (La Cathedrale de Strasbourg has a few lyrics).

I like Camel......have all the early albums , but I have always thought that the Snow Goose was a bit too laid back and boring at times.

Voted Tubular Bells but of course this will not stop Camel from winning yet another poll. (Actually I'm surprised this time but I really shouldn't.)

"On a dilemma between what I need and what I just want
Between your thighs I feel a sensation
How long can I resist the temptation?
I've got my bird, you've got your man
So who else do we need, really?"

Since there's no song I like more than Moon in June, and the lyrics are a part of me, it's very hard for me to think of Third as an instrumental album. But... as it is a mostly instrumental album, and it has enough pure instrumentals to cover one and a half LPs, or three sides of a double LP album, and aside from the other instrumental tracks I love the instrumental in Moon and June, and furthermore I rather dislike pedantry (especially when it comes from me slightly all the time), I will vote the same way, ticky tacky ticky, that eight other out-out-bloody-rageous people voted, and give it to Third. I adore that album, and over, up, over, up, down, if we want to be really nit-picky, the question would be better phrased as favourite rather than best album, but that would be a bit much.

True, alot of "instrumental Albums" have sections or a tune or town with lyrics/ spoken word so is hard to find albums entirely instrumental- Zappa's are a case in point with most of his instrumental albums having excerpts of some sort except maybe shutupandplayyourguitar............. and some of his his classical stuff....

The Grand Wazoo - first track is a vocal but I would call it instrumental too and a fav.........

There are ton of purely instrumental albums in PA

The majority of albums in my collection have no vocals, and I have a large number that are mostly instrumental, and the vast majority of my collection with or without any vocalizing don't have lyrics, but the impurest in me would also happily consider albums as instrumental that have some talking, some inarticulate vocals, or some chanting.

Right now playing a fave of mine: Bobby Beausoleil's Lucifer Rising, which is not to call it a classic of Prog album.

Oldfield easily, although it might have been a bit harder had the Mahavishnu album been Birds of Fire.

Good? To be or not to be, that is the subjective question. The ones in my collection are great according to my tastes, but some people have called some of the music I like crap, though I think that they would be hard pressed to make a valid argument for most of them not being accomplished efforts, particularly since so many that use such grossly reductive terminology do not have great knowledge of music. But different strokes for different folks.

Yessiree Bob all these three.

From those listed I went with Focus. If the 2013 Snow Goose re-recording was specified instead of the original, I would have picked that one, though.

Some other instrumental albums I would have consider voting for had they been included are:

Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
Herbie Hancock - Crossings
Alas - Pinta Tu Aldea
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
Gryphon - Red Queen To Gryphon Three
Rick Wakeman - Six Wives of Henry VIII
Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour

Jeff Beck - Wired.
Univers Zero - everything but Clivages will do for now.
Art Zoyd - Metropolis - more darkness and paranoia than any mere mortal can handle.
Djam Karet - everything but I'll default to the Devouring For now
Could be Camels Goose but I'll go for the Live Record version.
Zappa / Mothers - Shut Up AN' Play yer Guitar or Orchestral Favorites (the demos for this album are even more exquisite btw, watch out for them)
John Paul Jones - Zooma (does for the bass what Hendrix did for guitar).
Tortoise - It's All Around You - more fine melodies balanced against intense rhythm.

Was thinking of mentioning that, except it's committed the cardinal sin of having vocals on it. Unless this is just one song with one of the longest introductions ever. Wink

I find it difficult between Tubular Bells and Hamburger Concerto. Also, I would have included 6 Wives of Henry the VIII by Rick Wakeman, but even though it is quintesential prog, I feel it wouldn't have gotten much votes.

other great instrumental    albums that I forgot:

Jeff Beck - Wired, There and Back
Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger, A Taste for Passion, Imaginary Voyage

Gordon Giltrap - The Peacock Party
Steve Howe - Natural Timbre
Steve Hackett - Bay of Kings

But I had to go with the king of instrumental Prog: Mike Oldfield.

If I live to be a hundred I still won't get the 'Oldfield thing'........and I can't believe that he got more votes than MO, Focus, and Zappa....three far more talented bands.
And it amazes me that Camel is winning....imho probably the most boring of the early albums.
Not sure who should win this but certainly nor them or Oldfield.

I liked "Endless River" - except the ONE single vocal track... What awful lyrics.. "Momentary Lapse" and "Division Bell" was garbage, and they're my favorite band! No one tops their 70s stuff, though.
