The album "Sing to God" by Cardiacs has recently become a favorite of mine. It's very avent garde and crazy. Anyone else heard it? My favorite songs are Dirty Boy, Fiery Gun Hand, Flap Off You Beak, Dog Like Sparky, Wireless, Odd Even, Foundling, and so many more! ------------- User Banned for this Post |

I first listened to that album on friday. It became my new favorite album of all time. You can fast and intense music which is also complex and instrumentally rich at the same time. I always wanted an album like that. Before knowing about Cardiacs I used to listen to The Mars Volta and Melt Banana, which sound similar. Both Cardiacs and Melt Banana have high pitched vocals and a crazy punk influence. The Mars Volta sounds a bit like Cardiacs because both bands mix prog and punk elements. I hope Tim Smith gets well, so he can produce more Cardiacs albums. |

Bought it, listened to it, absolutely hated it, sold it. However, I recently heard Is This The Life? on Darren Reddick's programme "One Man And His Prog" on Planet Rock, and investigated the album it came from. I liked some of it (a lot) when I was in the right mood and began to appreciate the strangeness of this wacky band, so I may give Sing To God another chance. ------------- A TVR is not a car. I do give credit to the Cardiacs for using one of the most annoying sounds I've ever heard incorporated into a song. I present to you Exhibit A: This song is as disappointing to me as it is annoying. Without that electronic whistle, and some of the circus-like synth sounds, I kind of liked the intensity. This is too far into the deep end for me.

For me getting into Sing to God for some reason is harder work than getting into many of their older stuff like "A Little Man...", "On Land and in the Sea" and the superb live albums. It has grown on me quite a bit (when I first heard it, I was somewhat disappointed because my expectations were so super-high), but it still stands at only 4 1/2 stars, let's see whether it makes 5 at some point. I think I love William D. Drake's keyboards too much and miss them on Sing to God (and I can always do with more of Sarah's sax). Still it's top stuff of course and well worth the effort to listen to it again and again to figure out its true value.
I hope that he'll get much better than he currently is, and I think there's some hope. Little hope though, I think, to have him producing this kind of superexciting music again; I somehow guess that it'd not be good for his health. (Something like the Sea Nymphs perhaps, who knows?) PS: I loooove Exhibit A!  |

It was all out of print for a while. I was tempted to pay too much for a used copy of Sing To God before the reissues came out. Still the only one I have but I love it. Fiery Gun Hand was what really got me, still very relevant. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I think hating Cardiacs on first contact but coming to like them later is not an uncommon experience. It was that way for me, too.

At least two of my reviewer friends (known for their advanced musical tastes) went through the same process: it took them a long time to get into Cardiacs, but when they did, they became one of their favourite bands. I am still not totally on board about them, but - as my other half said - the "colonies" have produced some of the top albums of the past few years: Knifeworld, William D. Drake, North Sea Radio Orchestra.... Sublime stuff. |

I'll be curious to really explore this group.... the missing link between the mother ship and the colonies really does interest me on a musically intellectual level.
