Charles O'Connor (Horslips) and Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant).

None of those on the list come close.

I went with Darryl Way.
I'm not into Curved Air that much but I'm a fan of Darryl Way's Wolf.

As a Japanese, let me recommend Akihisa TSUBOY (KBB, Shinsekai, or so) or Keisuke TAKASHIMA (ptf).

I'm not a huge Kansas fanatic, but is there a reason Robbie Steinhart is not in the list?

The first that I thought of. And has anyone seen http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1103" rel="nofollow - Siegfried ? Or heard http://www.progarchives.com/mp3.asp?id=4702" rel="nofollow - Veronica ?

One more vote for Eddie Jobson.

From these - David Cross just slightly above Sugarcane. From outside of the list, I think Dave Arbus is the most talented and creative prog violinist that ever was.

It's between David Cross and Eddie Jobson. Never knew Ian Anderson played the violin, but it does not surprise me.

It's even featured on the most famous of albums: Thick as a Brick.

You folks are forgetting Pell Mell's Thomas Schmitt. He's the greatest, hands down!

From this list, Simon House, missing is Fred Frith

I was going to mention Frith but wasn't sure if he played a viola or violin, maybe both.

I also mis Ben Mink, from the progrockband FM (not the melodic rock band) and also from Heart and KD Lang.

I don't even know if FM is on progarchives, but they sound like Hawkwind.
The Rush-fans sure know him, because hey played a violinsolo on Losing It on the Signals album. And played on the Geddy Lee solo album, etc. etc.

Anyhow, he's great and reminiscent to Simon House and Edwin Jobson.

FM is indeed on PA, but as prog related, which I don't agree with.
Nash the Slash was violinist supreme before Ben Mink
So many bands not listed have great violinists, but I don't know their names.  This looks like a very UK (the country) oriented list.  A few that come to mind are the violinists for Quella Vecchia Loccanda, Il Castello Di Atlante, Quaterna Requiem, and I'm sure many more.  Didn't PFM have a lot of violin?

Jobson for style but Way for technique (coming from someone who played trumpet in middle school).

Steinhardt needs to be on this list.

Toss-up between Jobson and Way for me. Darryl's Concerto for Electric Violin (1978) is awesome.

My favourite is without a doubt Takehisa Kosugi from TheTaj Mahal Travellers. His debut album as a solo artists is also outstanding.
Oh and in a thread about prog rock violinists someone needs to mention Raymond Vincent Proof? Go listen to Danse Macabre.

Lots of other great violinists. One who's probably not at the top of the list but still deserves mention is Faith Fraioli from Flying Island.

Another vote for Robbie Steinhardt from me - that possibly gives him four votes?

Other violinists may be more skilled (and maybe more ground-breaking) but to me the sound of Robbie's violin on those classic Kansas songs is awesome.
