If your only exposure to King Crimson was http://aaron.thebackground.org/mystery.avi - this video , what catagory of prog would you classify it as?

thats it MO!
1. No man would ever want to pretend that he had never heard king crimson cos they are incredible
2. how the hell can you just magically erase any knowledge of what they sound like.
YOU REALLY SUCK!

The point I was trying to make is that the actions they do in this
video are really crazy and definitely aren't "symphonic prog", it's
almost closer to rock in opposition or even post-rock than anything
else I can think of. I was wondering what everyone else thought
as well.

Certainly would not put it on to pick up women with or right before sex.
It reminds me of the Waitng Room by Genesis off of the Lamb and Totus Nemesis off the First Proto-Kaw CD.

sorry MO.
KC are very hard to define as one genre indeed as their releases and different artists styles differ so much.
GREAT DECIEVER!!!

| this is an excerpt from Deja VROOOM, tracks B'Boom and THRAK. Most people classify KC as symphonic which is only partial true, as the symphonic phase last only for 2 years (Islands is more classical sounding).
I’ve always categorized crimson improvised music as RIO, free-rock, avant-garde.

Frenchie didn't own me one bit. I asked what this ONE PIECE would
be classified as, disregarding whatever opinions one may have about
King Crimson. If anything, you just owned yourself.

owned? I want trying to purchase/adopt/obtain any one on this thread. Just the thought of even pretending i had to give up all my great krimson listening is insulting! I love MO really, i find him to be one of the posters on this forum who i always look out for cuz i know he's gonna say something intelligent, humourous and/or intruging and interesting. Perhaps this was one of the weaker posts of his.

I really just wanted to show off this video, it's a lot different than the idea that most people have of King Crimson.

I think KC also created the standard for the sound of symphonic prog with their 1st album, so they were stigmatized with that genre.

If you're having trouble watching it, install http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ - this .
So it starts off with a guy making all kinds of atmospheric,
paranoid, post-rockish sounds with his guitar, and then TWO drummers
come in and do some crazy stuff for a while, then the full band comes
in and there's an upright electric bass, a 12-string bass (WTF?), and a
second guitarist in the mix, and after a few really noisy, dissonant
riffs, they break into what I can only describe as improvisational
performance art. The guitarist up front's use of guitar synth (to play
jazzy piano) is awesome, but it doesn't even compare to his use of a
POWER DRILL on the guitar. Let's not forget the guy with the upright
electric bass, who uses a bow and his fingers. Or the freakish bursts
of noise from the guitarist hiding in the back.

12 string bass?! what the hell is that? you probably refer to the "Warr guitar" (Trey Gunn is playing it in the video), it's something like the Chapman stick except it has a body, just as a conventional guitar/bass. ( )

Yeah. I tried to make my
description as ambiguous as possible, I wrote it originally for another
forum I go to where prog is much maligned... I wanted to describe
it more as post-rock or experimental rock, rather than prog...

Of course thats symphonic. It's just strange weird symphonic. Not sure I'll ever wanna watch that again. Neat musical ideas but unfortunatley they didn't form a cohesive piece of music. Piano guitar? Wow that's strange.
Much love and peace toi all.
