The late 70s became more confusing for us prog fans as our heroes started appearing on the singles charts! Which of these 'hits' still left the band with some dignity?

Went for Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 for the extra guitar at the start. It was the one my brother bought at the time. Really, really should of voted for "Northern Lights" as that's the best song in the poll. But if it wasn't for nostalgia tinged kneejerk quick voting you wouldn't have a male President!

I'd go for Wonderous Stories as its feels 'complete' (ie no edit needed) although Northern Lights is also very lovely. Fanfare For the Common Man is an uninspiring edit of the better album version. Ironically Aaron Copeland would not sanction its release until he heard the album version!

I'll vote for ELP here, but Yes, Genesis and Rennaisancee are really not far behind.

Wonderous Stories gets the nod, with Northern Lights and ELP close behind.

All beautiful pieces, hard to choose one from the other. Maybe I'll vote for one of them this time, and change mind mind after. Really hard choice. I think Jethro Tull's "The Whistler" should be on this list.

The Whistler wasn't so huge when compared to the other singles, so it was excluded from the list.

OK. Maybe in the US or UK did not do that well, but I remember it made it to the top 10 in Central America and some places like Brasil and Argentina, while the other songs of this list did not, except for Another Brick in the Wall.

I apologise for the Anglocentric nature of this poll. I was inspired when I heard 'Northern Lights' on the radio the other day and considered that the late 70s were paradoxical in that prog became deeply unpopular yet some bands and artists were getting hit singles.

I've listened to Fabfare this morning in a live version from Greg Lake (King Biscuit Flower Hour) So it gets my vote, otherwise it could have been Wonderous Stories. I'm a Floyd fan, but I've never loved Brick too much.

I found it hard to choose between ELP, Pink Floyd and Yes but as the latter was one vote behind the other two I voted for Wondrous Stories to leave at 3 on 11 votes

Fair enough. I expected a few more to come in for Oldfield and Renaissance...

Fanfare' over 'Brick as I absolutely loathe the latter.

Northern Lights is too much like actual pop for this forum's tastes whereas ABITW is a classic rock staple and Wonderous Stories is pretty much prog. Personally, I did contribute one of the few votes for Northern Lights. Had it been pitted against Comfortably Numb, I may not have but I have worn out ABITW now.

I was tempted to vote for fanfare but wonderous stories is just a great song. Besides ELP didn't actually write fanfare anyway.

Wondrous Stories? yawn.. which all goes for all that sh*t man...
pffff... On the Silent Wings of Freedom.. now we are talking.. a top 5'r alltime song from Yes.. and BY FAR the best mainstream prog anyone from jolly old England did from the very late 70's. It quite simply... rules and kicks Micky levels of ass... even with the Casio keys haha

No Kansas, Queen, Toto, Supertramp or Rush? I believe the scored big hits in the late seventies.
