Are there bands that are both on ProgArchives, MetalMusicArchives and JazzMusicArchives, ie. bands that match the progressive, metal and jazz tags?

I was expecting Niacin, but they don't seem to be listed on MMA.
Ulver made an electro-jazzy album, Perdition City, but it alone doesn't justify the band inclusion on JMA.

King Crimson and Buckethead... I don't know of any beyond that; certainly there are plenty of more contemporary groups one could make an argument for.

Edit: Mr Bungle as well apparently. I might keep looking and see what I find.

Edit 2: Guapo, Naked City, John Zorn, Jimi Hendrix, Diablo Swing Orchestra

Exivious and Plini are on all 3.

Yep, Planet X are in there but not Cynic, Motorpsycho, or Jagga Jazzist.

I did find another one in all three and that is Trioscapes.

Interesting that they are all modern bands. Personally I think Mahavishnu should be on all three and maybe even Tribal Tech.

There seems to be a few that don't quite make it(they aren't in JMA but are in the other two)such as  At War with Self, Aghora and Anomaly(apparently one of the first jazzy metal bands). Then there is Gordian Knot who are not in MMA but are in the other two.

Would of thought Zevious would have made it, surprised Guapo are on the jazz site.

^LTE too. Unless they got real jazzy after the debut, I don't recall much jazz related sound to them.

Gordian Knot is actually on all 3. And I can see why Aghora wouldn't be on JMA

Yes, I see Gordian Knot are on there. They didn't pop up when I first entered their name though. I had to look them up through "progressive metal" since I figured they would be listed in there.

I don't know LTE that well but based on what I have heard I never thought they had much of a jazz or even fusion element. I guess maybe I need to hear more. Also, if Ozric Tentacles were more metallish they might be on all three. If there was a psychedelic archives they would be on there though. Still, they fall under more categories than most bands I can think of.

Would there be a band on MMA and JMA, but not on PA? Or does being a jazz-metal related band mean the band is progressive?

Posted By: micky
Date Posted: March 12 2017 at 12:39
good question. I'll toss a virtual Harriet Tubman into the pot for the person who finds that band.

My guess... I'll be keeping it. If one finds one...  I'd likely be getting a refund for it would soon be added here. (an omission/oversight as those sites are probably much more active in additions than this site is today).

Jazz + Metal is pretty much a surefire for progressive/prog here as I've seen things go.

Darn! I thought I had a JA/MA/not PA band in John Zorn's Painkiller but they're avant. Oh well, one more for the original topic.

EDIT: Painkiller not Paunkiller

Fishbone
Cream

Good finds. Always thought "Sunless Saturday" by Fishbone was a great track, but never bought them as part of the "funk metal" movement. Thought they were lumped into that category.

Thought Cream might have been on PA under proto or prog related and so I searched to see they have been debated many times prior. Rather amusing to read some of the seriousness that went on in the discussion. Maybe the "but JMA and MMA includes them" could be added to discussion. Of course, don't know if that would be in favor or against reason.

It used to be but they changed it. I hate it when things change for the worse. If you are going to fix it improve upon it or leave it alone.Confused

I never knew Cream were that jazzy.

Also, I was thinking maybe the band living colour but I don't think they were ever fusion enough either. Ditto King's X who are probably on MMA and here but not JMA.

It's because of a glitch, and M@x hasn't been around to fix the site yet.

I thought the Beatles invented heavy metal (or maybe that's just a thing from another prog forum site). ;)

They're under proto-metal, because they're an early hard rock band that influenced metal. (Perhaps most notably with the famous "Sunshine of Your Love").

That I can kind of see that but they're essentially a Blues band, what are they doing on the Jazz site.

I'm with you there, I haven't heard anything by Cream that I would associate with Jazz.

Ginger Baker prefers being called a jazz drummer. Not sure what category they're under though or if that's even relevant to their inclusion.

Maybe they're included because of their live discography? The two live cds I have are interspersed with jazzy runs most notably emanating from Ginger and Jack. Clapton remained true to his Albert King-on-exciting-drugs thang (which I absolutely adore).
