All, I'm looking for recommendations for prog tracks that have moody, emotional and atmospheric elements that make great background listening, even motion picture soundtracks. Can be vocal or instrumental, doesn't have to be 'pure' prog (post rock & the softer prog metal genres have good examples). Some examples of the type of thing I'm looking for are below. Thanks! |

Thanks. I suppose as I'm asking for music that would span a number of genres there are a lot of candidates, was looking for something a bit more modern and catchy. Basically I'm working away on my desktop PC with my prog rock playlist playing in the background when one of these songs comes on and the music rises from my subconscious recognition to conscious and when it ends, I'm thinking, 'damn that was good' and hit replay.... |

that is why I won the thread ... that is exactly what I just sugggested man...it is in a category by itself... exactly what you are looking for... nothing sounds quite like it. my better half said it best.... and most of those glowing reviews... the collabs.. were because I turned them on to it back in the good old days of the site. Thanks. I must have heard a dud youtube track - the one you linked sounds better. Still not exactly my cup of tea on first listen however sometimes great songs take a couple of listens before they click. From 2 minutes into the track is more like what I'm looking for (and similar to early Pink Floyd). Will listen a few more times. Thanks for the recommendation!

70's Tangerine Dream is always perfect for what you described. Here are some less trivial ones that come to mind, though:

Magnum, A nice variety of background music, thanks. Syrinx in particular has caught my ear - nicely produced with clarity in the instrument reproduction rarely heard. Interpose is also a good listen. Will give them a couple of spins to see what catches. Do keep the recommendations coming. |

yeah the listening experience is muted listening to it on a computer, it is true mood and atmosphere track and needs headphones, darkness and a glass of wine hahahand having bum youtube tracks doesn't help at all. Good you liked it. Thanks for all the recommendations, a number of these are new to me and fit the bill (eg. Watter). Regarding Mogwai, yes was aware of them but nothing from them really clicks with me. Similar post-rock bands that I do like are God is an Astronaut and Blueneck. Any more recommendations like this? |
