From the Facebook group The Canterbury Scene, originally posted by Aymeric Leroy:
More
sad news... "It is with heavy hearts that we notify everyone of the
passing our beloved father Allan Holdsworth. We would appreciate privacy
and time while we grieve the loss of our dad, grandad, friend and
musical genius. We will update close friends and family when service
arrangements have been made and will notify the public of an open
memorial service, which all would be welcome. We are undeniably still in
shock with his unexpected death and cannot begin to put into words the
overwhelming sadness we are experiencing. He is missed tremendously.
Much Love, Louise Holdsworth, Emily Holdsworth, Sam Holdsworth & Rori"
One of my personal favorite guitarists of all time, a true innovator of fusion guitar.

I saw him once in a very small club in Eureka California more than 30 years ago. The best guitar player I have ever seen and I have seen a lot. A terrible loss to the world of music. Condolences to his family and friends.

Allan was the very reason this L.A. Californian guitarist was asked to work, tour and record in a well-known Vertigo Records signed Swiss progrock band Flame Dream.Flame Dream always loved my Holdsworth influence playing. I recently talked with Allan again at a NAMM17 afterparty, and he enjoyed always living in my warm golden sunshine state;a true always dear gent dudeson http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/entertainment/music/sd-et-music-holdsworth-obit-20170416-story.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/entertainment/music/sd-et-music-holdsworth-obit-20170416-story.html “If you fall in love with a woman, there's this unknown thing that gives you a force and energy, and music is like that, too.If I lived to be 2000,I'd never know anything about music. And that's great. ... RIP Allan....I was fortunate to see him with UK on their first tour (he blew the doors off!) and much later, in a small club as "IOU" with the amazing Jeff Berlin and Chad Wackerman.
Truly a one-of-a-kind, I cannot think of many imitators of his legato guitar style. Amazing.

This news really saddened me - more than usual, maybe because it was so unexpected? I can't imagine how his family feels.
Some of my favorite stuff is his work with Soft Machine, Gong and UK - cool to hear that some people here actually saw that stuff performed live!

There's some good news - the crowdfunding campaign raised over $114,000! That's over 5 times what they were originally asking for - they shut it down after three days.
I am really heartened that people still care about music and artists! I know many of the people here support music but out in the "real world" there are many who feel entitled to music for free and don't do anything to support artists...

I have been so busy with the job these past two weeks that I hadn't heard about this. Absolutely out of left-field; very sad news. With all the accolades of Holdsworth on public record (including by Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen), all I can say is he was one of the most unique expressionists with the guitar that I have ever heard - truly inspiring! R.I.P. Allan Holdsworth...
