What are Genesis's proggiest songs from "Abacab" to "Calling All Stations"?
I think they started to be less pleasing to prog fans' ears from Abacab. But, I am sure they still had proggy moments which were pretty much mixed with their commercial approach in the listed albums.

I made the following poll:

I appreciate your opinion to participate in the poll.

I must not be a prog fan cause I enjoy all Genesis ('cept of course CAS).......fine by me. It's about the music, not the prog.

Second Home By The Sea. Not a favorite of mine, but it's prog.

I am preparing a list which I share soon, but I will appreciate if you share your opinions on any tracks from that era of Genesis.

That and Domino Part One–"In the Glow of the Night." After that, it gets spotty.

There's a track from Calling all stations that has an extended instrumental section but I don't remember the name of it. Other than that I would say:

Abacab
Dodo/Lurker
Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea
Mama (not really prog but interesting)
The Brazilian
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (prog pop at least)
Domino (parts 1 and 2)
Fading Lights

Not much on FGTR is what I would call prog or even really proto prog. There is a brief instrumental part before the Serpent and the Serpent itself might be one of the proggiest but but over all this album is probably best categorized as baroque pop. I don't know if I would say it's the most under rated in their catalog but it's probably the least understood and certainly one of their most overlooked. I think you really only need it if you are a completist, a hardcore Genesis fanatic or just really curious as to what they sounded like early on.

Great list even if I don't love some of the songs--specifically No SOn of Mine (not prog) and Driving the last spike (hate the song)

The only later Genesis songs I might actually hate are "Jesus he knows me" and "I can't dance."

Home by the sea/Second home BTS
Me & Sarah Jane
Dodo
Domino
The Brazilian
Fading Lights

That's about it for prog since ABACAB, but there have been good Genesis non prog tunes; Mama, No son of Mine for example.

To save me writing virtually the same, I'd agree 110% with this post

I guess my favourite proggy Genesis song from the 80's would have to be "Home by the Sea / 2d Home..." (though I only know the live versions)... but for me that's a perfect blend of 80's and prog. On the other hand, I do agree with Dodo/Lurker, of course, but even more notable would be the complete song (I don't remember the names of the other parts) that goes over 10 min (or even near 17 min? I don't really remember it so well, I only heard it a few times on YouTube).

The proggiest songs are not necessarily my favourites. Some songs are not very proggy, but still excellent (Mama, Domino).

The proggiest:
  • 2nd Home by the Sea
  • Fading Lights
  • Dodo/Lurker
  • The Brazilian

I'm thinking that Genesis compromised during this 80's stylistic shift. They produced Prog pieces (whilst avoiding the, at that time, new Neo-Prog cliches of Marillion, I.Q. and Twelfth Night (among others). A very valid cross-pollination of Progressive Rock with what was cutting edge 80's sensibilities. Sure their 80's things weren't a patch on Selling England, but still engaging and interesting. I'll always prefer the 70's albums, but embrace their 80's-onward albums with respect.

It's difficult to muster respect for songs like Illegal Alien and Invisible Touch, but I get what you mean. I actually quite like their 80's sound, and prefer it to that awful neo-prog sound, but most of the time the songs weren't there for me. Each post Duke album would have a few gems and a lot of drek.

^ Yeah. The Pop songs you mention were blatant commercialism, but they stuck some more 'involved' pieces on the albums as well. That's All is a really, REALLY great little ditty. Nifty bass-line, organ sounding solo from Banks, guitar solo from Mike. Very well crafted.

One song missing from the poll that feels "proggy" to me is Keep It Dark. Otherwise, from this time period Dodo/Lurker has been a favorite of mine.
