If this sh*t keeps going like it's going right this minute I'm seriously giving thought to finding myself a new music site online. Kills the fun. It is unbelievably irritating and furthermore leaves one feeling unsafe whilst communicating with other members 'am I about to lose my post/will it go through/nahh access denied'.
Cannot be right that most other sites can run without these robot tests and we can't. Yep might as well look around RYM for new kicks.

Sure. I felt it for the duration of an evening. Now it's back with a vengeance - especially when I post from my laptop...and my laptop is pretty clean. I stopped surfing for porn long ago. I now use binoculars thanks to my nextdoor neighbour
Seriously though George I can't think of any positives this new implementation has brought with it. Spammers still frequent the site - even whilst Max had the setting on high. To me it seems like fishing for trout using boomerangs. Wonderful tool sure but not really meant for fishing.

I take it you're half tongue-in-cheek there Micky as Max doesn't make money off this site...if so it is not the amount that earns you the right to stop working irl.
I think this robot non-sense is a case of being overprotective. Kinda like Kansas pulling out of their European tour because of future terrorist attacks. On here the terrorists are merely substituted by malicious spammers.

last straw here...

15 minutes to make a post.   I'll be back when or if Captcha is removed.

not sure about the rest of you....  if you get the communication with Captcha error..  your post isn't going through.  Enter the code.. still rejected...  tried to bypass it it.  ANd continuely skipped back trying to get a hole in Captcha.. it asked for it every single time. The pisser is.. you have to cut and paste the code.. and you lose the post you had saved if of course Captcha rejects you.. which it has every single time for me.

I'm out.. see you all on the bright side.

Just posted this on the PSIKE team but more appropriate here:

This site is such a pleasure lately. It asks me if i'm a robot. I check the box. It asks me to check squares. I comply. It doesn't issue a verify button and i have to skip to do it again. I'm getting irritated. I check another series of boxes. Despite the friggin cars having tiny fragments in certain boxes, those don't count for some reason. Try again. I finally perform satisfactory for anti-robot protection services. It works. I instantly get a user error page and have to start all over. I try again. User not authorized. I refresh. Same. I say f**k it and instead of quoting start a new post. Refresh about ten times hoping it will finally take. Eventually success ensues as the morning is completely wasted away.

What say youz? Should we start our own site?

You sound like barnacle designing their 'dream ship'. I don't have a problem with anyone making profit from facilitating the PA resource for discourse and reference. Start up your own site that dispenses entirely with any prerequisite investment in terms of viability and see how far you get.

I also believe also he's not making money from PA or the sister sites....  and that's precisely why he shouldn't use us as guinea pigs to try out this cruddy spam detector thingie on us, so he (M@X) can install it on his more sensitive sites.

For me it's been a bigger problem being targeted at this site outside the forum (like when I tried to write and edit a review). It's a shame, but this site does need security. Spammers are not as big of a worry as hackers, and spammers in the forum are easier to deal with than ones spamming the database.

I'm not a techie, so feel free to correct me, but I suspect that Captcha was implemented site-wide as an attempt to mitigate DoS or DDoS attacks. I was getting denial of service messages in the front-side part of the site before Captcha was implemented. I could generally access the fora, but the rest of the site commonly was inaccessible.

I do hope that a good solution can be reached ASAP.

Yes, but one of his last statements was about how he "couldn't post or do anything here" (paraphrasing) because he kept getting error messages on everything he tried.

Capthchas aren't the only frustration.  The site has performed like sh*t for a while before them.

I log in from time to time - write a post or two - see if this sh*t continues....and sadly it does.
I'm at a point where I seriously fear for the site. Less and less traffic combined with a massive drop in reviews all say the same thing: 'This is bloody annoying - I better find myself somewhere else to chat about music'

Rest in peace PA - you used to be a lot of fun.

^ Oh no. If Divine has given up, what has it come to? Does anyone know why M@X doesn't deal with this? The situation on MMA is even worse. I mean what's the point of having these sites going if they aren't functioning properly? Is it simply not profitable? I can't imagine that being the case if it were run properly

I don't know, I kind of feel the evil of it has been totally exaggerated. So it's occasionally annoying (no doubting that), but a deal-breaker for being active on the site?

Because I now expect it, I simply highlight and COPY whatever I'm doing each time, then if I have to get stopped by It That Shall Not Be Named and have to go back, I just PASTE it back in and try again. It usually doesn't hit two times in a row. I know it shouldn't have even come to this point, but it's pretty easy to adjust to.

Hear, hear. Thumbs Up

I sure as heck am not enjoying having to fill out captchas, but they're a mild inconvenience at worst.

I've had it hit like 5 times in a row before and still can't post emoticons. At that point, I just say f**k it.

I'm not saying I'm going to be leaving the site, but this is more than a minor inconvenience really.

It may or may not be a mild inconvenience, or a larger problem for some but that's missing the point. What it is, is a completely unnecessary action that annoys the regular users and doesn't really keep threats away.

I said it before. There has to be a better way.

I agree, Michael, it's really annoying but not impossible to accommodate.
I guess it's a security trade-off M@x has certainly considered beforehand, otherwise why have bothered in the first place Ermm ???

I get your point Michael but it shouldn't have to be this irritating to frequent a music site - especially since this new nuisance basically has no function other than arbitrarily erasing one's posts and demanding that you prove your carbon based existence. It does not stop spammers + the usual robots that frequent PA never really posted and I don't see that changing in the future.

But, and this is the part that pisses me off the most, there has been no official explanation nor rationale on why this thing was implemented in the first place. We, the people who actually use and run the site, are merely left with speculation.
Is this out of caution? Is it a business thing ie profitable? Was it forced on Max?

I've tried reading up a bit on Google's Captcha software David, and as far as I can tell, it is a FREE service offered to site owners and web administrators but is not compulsory. It identifies the browser being used, the user's IP address and looks for cookies which will identify any historical activity as inherently 'human' Google also claim that the software is sophisticated enough to distinguish mouse movements made towards the "I am not a robot' check box as human or by machine. No, I've no idea how they do that either and yes, Google are therefore monitoring our every keystroke online. There is an article on Wired (albeit it's 3 years old) which explains some of the background

http://www.wired.com/2014/12/google-one-click-recaptcha/" rel="nofollow - http://www.wired.com/2014/12/google-one-click-recaptcha/

I believe that originally the hugely irritating picture galleries we are assailed with was designed just for smartphone and tablet users but that no longer appears to be the case.
