What are the most relaxing prog songs in your opinion?

Not annoying relaxing... and not heavy relaxing... like relaxing relaxing (if you know what I mean).

When I go to bed and want to relax, I usually listen to Soft Machines Third album.

Especially Slightly all the Time, very relaxing and helps with sleep

I don't know if you'd consider that prog but everything that has ambient elements could be what you're looking for. Brian Eno, Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Ashra, etc. are all worth checking out.

It is not exactly what I am looking for... I would not listen to anything ambient as prog.

Talk Talk's last two albums are very relaxing and very progressive (too progressive to be called prog for some people). And then you can look for post rock bands influenced by them like Bark Psychosis.

Genesis’ Ripples from A Trick of the Tail is a nice before bed piece.

I’m not sure if I like being called a ‘part-time prog rocker’ as this music has never left me even when I pursue other musical interests. Yes, some pizza would be great. I’ll have double pepperoni and cheese.

I guess there's too many songs I would consider relaxing for before going to bed. However, the one particular song I have used when I'm stressed that helps me relax and feel better is "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"... all 25 min together. I can almost feel it rearanging my nerves and my head.

Prog before bed - any early Floyd, especially live, most Krautrock, Space/Psych, Canterbury etc.
at the same time, I can relax if I spin Opeth or Slayer, or whatever sounds I find 'soothing'. VDGG, Univers Zero or Magma. Whatever. As long as the tunes are something you enjoy, then it works.
One thing though - if I chose to spin Deathspell Omega before crashing, I do recall having nightmares - well, not heart-attack dodge, but horror-themed dreams. No blood, from memory.

I love falling asleep to Damnation by Opeth, with honourable mentions to Significant Other by Steven Wilson, Entangled by Genesis, side 2 of Wind and Wuthering (bar All in a Mouse's Night ffs, ruddy filler...), bits and pieces from the Snow Goose...

I often play Dead Can Dance before bed time....great music for relaxation and providing interesting dreams.
I also enjoy Caravanserai by Santana and the early Moody Blues albums.

John G Perry Sunset wading, thats a lovely lp and very underated. Anthony Phillips Geese and the Ghost is another 'drift off' lp for me, gentle and calm. Pat Metheny, As falls Witchita so falls Witchita Falls is great bed time music.. Vangelis 'Soil Festivities' (bit 'ambient' in this context perhaps) lovely drifting off with the rain falling on the roof of your caravan (lived in one many years back) and Hergest ridge by Mike Oldfield

I love Opeth, Slayer, and VDGG, but I would never consider listening to them before bed. They just make me excited and energetic - in other words, they wake me up before I even start to fall asleep!

Geese and the Ghost has too many frantic moments imo and so does Trespass and some of Camel's later albums. Harbour of Tears by Camel might be good though. I haven't heard it in a long time but I remember it being rather drifty.

I’d nod my head in agreement, but the title track is quite intense and definitely not bedtime music.

While Harmonium is listed on the site as symphonic prog, Cinquieme Saison is definitely more of a prog folk album. Very gentle and pastoral with lots of gentle acoustic guitar and flute-driven sections.

Yeah, I guess that's a perfect description. Just check out either "Depuis l'automn" (for a 10 min vocal song) and / or "Histoires sans paloles" (for an instrumental 17 min journey) ASAP. They are among the most beautiful pieces of prog you could hear.

Before bed, I'm big on Ragnarok's debut album from 1976, the perfect mellow album.

Metamorfosi's INFERNO is another one before bed, the whole journey on that album is quite peaceful, with great power at the same time.

Milgres dos Peixes--while not on this site--is definitely prog, very tropical, very vocal, layered, and beautiful.

On top of the Geese and the Ghost recommendation, The Meadows of Englewood by Ant is perhaps even more relaxing. The 36-minute epic is a cascading, beautiful track that is probably Ant's best.

Inferno for going to sleep? Not unless I wanted to have nightmares I guess... I do love that album, but I don't particularly think it's a relaxing one. Neither is it particularly heavy... and the nightmares thing was more of a joke, but I wouldn't call it relaxing either. Still a wonderful album that should be checked out.

I wouldn't listen to prog rock before going to bed. It's too complex and involved. Keeps me awake. I tend to listen to stuff like Eno or ambient electronica. Nothing with lyrics and jazzy twists and turns.

I'm partial to Ulver's Perdition City and Shadows of the Sun. The latter is especially useful for facilitating that somewhat gentle, disassociated state of mind needed to cast off into oblivion. It's also the perfect length.

On another note, avoid catchy material. If you're like me, you'll wake in the middle of the night for a piss and suddenly find your brain replaying the same melodic hook all the way into the wee hours of the morning, at which point, fatigued and frustrated, you might just decide that music is in fact a great inexorable evil set upon mankind by prankish gnomes to drive us into insanity. Maybe.
