Hi everyone
First time post on here although I've been hanging around for a while and using the wonderful resources of the site. I've acquired a copy of Amon Duul's wolf city and have tried to find version /release details, the one thing I'm struggling with is that all releases appear to have had a gatefold sleeve whereas mine has a single sleeve with a top opening. It most closely matches this version https://www.discogs.com/Amon-D%C3%BC%C3%BCl-II-Wolf-City/release/835856" rel="nofollow - on Discogs down to matrix numbers and sleeve description including all text and the switched track order, only difference is that it is not a gatefold.

Anyone have a similar copy, any help in identifying this copy would be really appreciated, many thanks Phil.

Are you sure it's not  some East German knock off? Post a picture of it.

Thanks, it's on UA - I don't think it's a knock-off, a friend passed it on to me, he had it from back in the day and it certainly looks like it's been 'enjoyed' since the '70s rather than a recent knock-off.
I have photos but have been unable to upload - I'll look for a way
Thanks again Phil

OK, tried and failed - what's the easiest way to upload photos to a post? Thanks

I have a U.A. press in the gatefold cover. I never knew it existed as a single-sleeve.

I have a Canadian one on UA that has a single sleeve.

Thanks for all your replies and research. I did look at the Canadian version on Discogs but I think it has a different serial number, I'd appreciate if you could check the photos against your version kepler62.
As you can see from the photo the sleeve is top opening.
Also just noticed on loading the photos some text on the label has been blocked out, does this offer a clue.
Thanks for your help again guys, Phil

Judging by the labels (with some of the text similarly blocked out at the manufacuring stage) I'd say it's this one:

Nothing about a top insert on the sleeve however....

Thanks ExitTheLemming

The labels certainly look a match, however the copy you link to has the gatefold sleeve. Thanks for taking the time.
By the way I'm loving the music, maybe I'll have to live with the mystery of the sleeve, not planning on selling so doesn't really make a difference

Enjoy whatever you're listening to today

Phil

The US version was a single cover, not gatefold. Could be someone swapped out the cover because they wanted the gatefold. Even though your actual LP is the German issue......I think this happens a lot at used record stores.

During the early 70's a lot of UA lps were pressed in Germany but were for the UK market (probably due to fuel restrictions impacting on pressing plants in UK. My suggestion is that someone has dismantled a gatefold copy, taken the centre (inner gatefold) out and re-sealed it to make a single sleeve; why they would make it a 'top loader' is a bit of a puzzler but thats my best bet.. i'm not aware of any UK varient that has  a single sleeve but i could be  wrong.

Come to think of it I have a few albums that I bought new back in the seventies with the sleeve not matching the record. I'll have to look. They were definitely imports. Canadian pressings weren't the greatest pressings back in the seventies and it wasn't unusual for me to buy a German or Japanese import even though I could get a Canadian one for much cheaper. This was back in the days when you bought records at a record store and the guy in the record store knew his sh*t. Discovered a lot of music this way. My Wolf City LP is a Canadian pressing with a single sleeve. Nothing special about it except the music!

Thanks again guys, some similar thoughts to mine - except for the scratching balls thing . Thought maybe it was a resealed gatefold with the centre removed but then it'd be more complex to put the opening at the top and there is no sign of such work. Also possibly a swap of sleeve and record - most likely - except that all the identification on the sleeve is right, I believe the US version carried different serial numbers.
Could it have been an early, pre-production - promotional - version?

Thanks again - keep scratching

Phil

Hi,

The original album, even the American version had Surrounded by the Stars on SIDE B ... the whole album opened with Wolf City, and then went into the instrumental.

Somewhere along the way, probably because there were a couple of versions of "Surrounded by the Stars" done LIVE, it was switched, and what used to be Side B became Side A. I still can not listen to "Surrounded by the Stars" as the opening cut in that album!

its definately a UK printed sleeve.. the other two possibilities are that it was a pre-production version but they are usually not glued at all and have no visible seams, just 'proofs' for ok'ing with the record company before printing on mass. Otherwise it could just be a 'fluke', printed the wrong way round so didnt fit with the inner gatefold so was put together as a single- either slipped through quality control or someone took it home.

It is most likely a German "Nice Price" reissue. It was rather usual that in the 80s
albums from the 70s where reissued and sold for (almost) half the price here.
Most gatefolds where changed to single covers back then.

I dont think so.. the disc is an original german press for the UK market and UA tended to release their budget range on either the 'Sunset' imprint or the low price 'rock series' (usually starting with the UP prefix in the serial number) and on a 'black and white' (as opposed to cream and brown) UA label. Looking at the photos again it looks like the seams might have been cellotaped at some time so i still think its either a 'proof' sleeve, a factory mistake or home-modified sleeve..
