This one didn't turn out too bad either. Atleast there should be something to love for everyone. Another 25 more or less progressive albums I like (and love a handful of them dearly). While for 1980-1981 I actually had to leave out some genuine favorites of mine, there was no real shortage of space for 1985-1989.

Not sure why exactly why but I never allow more than one album per artist. If not Dead Can Dance would have had two titles more.

Of those I know, Kate Bush, Talk Talk, DCD ae all good.

It Bites was one of my favourite prog rock bands of that period. A little too commercial for your list, I guess..

I don't know I haven't heard it. I love lots of 80's pop that were actual hits but the commercial stuff of the era I enjoy tends not to have all that much relation to prog.

I kinda liked all that new romantic synth pop..

I was a sucker for Japan, Gary Numan and Duran Duran!

Ah, 1985-1989... probably the dryest, least lucrative musical era from the fifties to now. Notably, many of these albums are lesser (albeit still quality) offerings from artists having already made better albums (Art Zoyd, Kate Bush, Kraftwerk etc, to name the obvious ones). Nonetheless, you've done an excellent job (again) of compiling an impressive and well-rounded series of choices. I've added a couple more albums to the ol' wishlist.

I'd love to go with Shub-Niggurath, but Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden is too transcendetal and important not to select. 90's post rock, particularly that of a more albient nature, is my favorite genre right now, and Talk Talk all but singlehandedly spawned it. Years passed before everyone else caught up.

Oh sure. My list of synth pop, new romantics and also new wave/post punk that I actively like could go on "forever".

Glad you like the selection. As great as they are neither Art Zoyd or Kraftwerk's outings are among my five favorite albums by any of them so full agreement there. But while not my personal favorite (that would be The DreamingHounds of Love is widely regarded Kate's definitive "masterpiece isn't it? Well, its not important - I agree with what you write anyway.

Two fairly obscure albums among these that I consider genuinely fresh and innovative is Reluctant Hosts Hemp Is Here. And while another favorite Hellebore; although avant it does lean strongly on the late 70's RIO/Zeuhl-tradition. But the quality certainly isn't lesser. Maybe you already know all these?

Big fan. Pretty much all his releases are great. Guess my top three are his 1990-1992 albums:

Al-Jadida +
Roots & Sprouts &
Blue Camel

Many I love here, but as soon as I saw Il y a des jours, which was first-thing, my mind was pretty well made-up.

I could never get into that Talk Talk album which is supposed to be their best despite many listens over the years - guess it's just not for me. I bought the Kate Bush on release and liked it a lot but over the years less and less. So I voted for 'Present - Le Poison qui rend fou' with Hellebore as runner up. Nice list again.

My favorite of theirs is their swan song, Laughing Stock. Maybe try that one before you give them up completely. Depends on your preferences of course but I think its really quite something.

Tough call between UZ, SN, and Present.

I'll go with SN this time around.

This was totally a tie between Present & Univers Zero.  I voted for Present because, uh, I had to vote for someone.  Finalists include Shub-Niggurath (Man With Hat, I feel your pain), Art Zoyd (but I voted for them in an earlier poll and I like to spread the love), Lindsay Cooper, News from Babel, Offering & Vasilisk (love that album title).  I'm not familiar with:  Leven Signs, Picky Picnic, Clivage, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Elicoide, Non Credo or Talk Talk.  As I've mentioned, Hounds of Love just doesn't knock me out the way it does most people.

Kate

Would have voted for Marillion - Season's End if had been an option. Important (and excellent) album that showed a distinct change of direction for 'neo prog'.

The crossover metal scene ruled those years. Dimension Hatross for sure. Watchtower - Control and Resistance being another favorite from the era.

what is crossover metal? I know of crossover thrash which is a mix of thrash and hardcore-punk, i.e. Suicidal tendencies being the best known example.

sorry I didn't use the exact sanctioned nomenclature. I grew up in a place where any metal band using a fast 2 beat was considered part of the crossover metal band. Black/thrash/death it was all just metal getting a hardcore punk injection.
