Hockey season started tonight with two fun games between the Blues and the Pens and the Flyers and the Sharks (and some other games as well...).

Go NYR! Don't suck this year...

I'm counting on the Red Wings to secure a top 5 draft pick this year.  Only thing exciting going on here is they officially open the new slICE arena tonight.

Pens 3-peat?  Being a fan, sure would like to see it, realistically I don't think so as they lost a few role players and Tampa Bay looks strong.  Could this be the year the Caps get over the hump or are they mentally fried when playoffs come around again.

Live where the Hurricanes are and try to go see a couple of games a year and mildly root for them, they will struggle to make the playoffs....again.

Let's Go PENS!

I think that we will be able to say that the Habs will not make the playoffs this year before the end of October.

and to think that the fans pay $150-200 to go see this crap. Laughable!

Although it's still early, the early returns are distinctly not favorable. The Rangers have had some pretty good runs in recent years, so maybe a down year is due. The problem is they have a tendency to make a habit of down years.

No, I don't think so, Price is here to stay and so is the GM. If they don't make it this year some heads will surely roll on the second floor (Bergevin's assistants) but I'm not expecting much more.

and they will probably keep going with that goddamn defensive mentality of the last 25 years. sigh

Yeah...just watching them this year they seem older and slower. I fear Henrik's best days are behind him and his ability to carry a good team are in the past. But it's still early...they displayed some good fight coming back against the Isles (only to lose of course...but at least they got a point!)

It just seems like every year his name pops up on the trade block. I wouldn't get rid of him, but yeah...their mentality of late (I haven't been following them for 25 years :P) is certainly a hindrance.

But not the habs.

^^ Hey Weber's been playing great too. Pretty disappointing to practically have to give up on the habs chances for this season that early. And no need to tank since the upcoming draft is not very promising (not that they'd do it anyway). It's not like the team is bad. They play great and should win most games but as it's been the case for the last 4 years, they don't score goals. I don't know what Bergevin was thinking to start the season with such weak D. The offense is slightly better imo (on paper, not what we see currently) but they had no real chances of reaching the playoffs unless Price played like '13-'14. With such space on the salary cap, we could have kept Markov AND Radulov which would have been the best Canadiens roster offensively since what, the early 2000s?

What's worse is that if they don't manage to come back strong next year, it will take an incredibly long time to rebuild. I firmly believed (and continue to believe) that they had/have about a 5 year window of opportunity to go all the way while Price was/is still in his prime. If that window closes it will remain closed for a looong time. The team won't go anywhere with the current prospects they have and the current upper management has proven countless times that it's not up to the task of properly building a team for the future.

...still gonna follow their games and cheer for them through this sh*t though and will be hoping for a Toronto-like rebuild in the near future.

Restructuration time for the Habs?

If I were Marc Bergevin...I'm keeping

Forward: Danault, Byron, Lehkonen, Hudon, Drouin

Def: Weber, Benn

Goalie: Lindgren

I'm putting everybody else on the trade market!

But we know it will never happen in Montréal, n'est-ce pas?

I don't disagree, other than if I were Geoff Molson I would fire Marc Bergevin rather than having him preside over the rebuild

Yes, I don't trust that Bergevin and all his collaborators. Also, I would trade Drouin but keep "Periphery" in case he just had an off year... But I really think that patience is going to be a virtue for Habs fans in the next years...

The problem is that Bergevin still have 4 years to his contract and at 4 millions per year they surely won't throw all that money out the window.

He has done great things overall imo but I must admit that his last summer decisions are highly questionnable.

The team played their best game of the year last night against Tampa...and they scored 1 goal!

Something must be done (le nombre de sièges vides va probablement dicter la suite des choses).

How is it possible that an expansion team (Vegas) is the best team in the West?  They are 17-2-1 at home.  Is this mafia driven?  Are the other teams spending the night before in the casinos with all they can drink beverages?  Expansion teams are supposed to suck!

Doesn't really matter since they have the best goalie in the world in Princess Price, isn't it?

Poor Habs fans.

There is growing discontent in Ottawa, man they tried to sell the whole F team...and failed! Huge mistakes by the direction all year round and now the fans and the players are totally pissed off, understandably.

Very dark days ahead for your franchise, Mister Melnyk.

Extremely disappointing season for the Habs and Sens (two of my usual favs).

EriK Karlsson (shame sens!) and Max Pacioretty (very unhappy) have surely played their last game with their respective teams..and Carey Price will stay with the Habs for the next 8 years which assuredly means no cup until 2030 (sorry, Carey, but by the time you grew up it will be far too late).

Will have to find myself another team in the east for the next few years.

^ yeah, I'd like to see the knights take it. But as long as the NJ and PHI are eliminated I don't really care who wins. Part of me wouldn't mind seeing the Caps or Jets win it either.

FRankly, this year I've been quite out of the loop as it comes to the NHL. So, I have even less of an idea on the particularities of this years tourney...that said, my predictions below:

1st round:

East:
Lightning in 6
Leafs in 7
Caps in 5
Pens in 6

West:
Predators in 5
Jets in 7
Knights in 7
Sharks in 7

2nd round:

East:
Lightning in 6
Pens in 7

West:
Jets in 7
Knights in 7

3rd round:

East:
Pens in 7
Knights in 6

Championship:

Pens in 5

Evgeny Malkin is my #1 NHL player since Peter Forsberg retired in 2011 so I will root for Pittsburgh in the East this year.

A third Cup in a row for the Pens would be a spectacular achievement.

Go Gino!

Another Isles season over, more abysmal than the last. #SnowMustGo...and Weight, too. JT please stay. But if he goes, the future is still bright, with Barzal, Pulock and Beauvillier. They'll have their careers squandered without an overhaul in the management and coach group though.

Anyway, playoff predictions:

R1

East:
Bolts v. Devs
Bruins v. Leafs
Caps v. Jackets
Pens v. Flyers

West:
Preds v. Avs
Jets v. Wild
Knights v. Kings
Ducks v. Sharks

CSF

East:
Bolts v Leafs
Caps v. Pens

West:
Preds v. Jets
Kings v. Sharks

CF

East:
Bolts v. Pens

West:
Preds v. Sharks

SCF

Bolts v. Preds

anyhow.. the too smart .. too rational to ever place money upon NHL predictions...

R1

East:
Bolts v. Devils (3-0 Devils says throw out regular season... hth matchup mismatch loud and clear) Devils in 6
Bruins v. Leafs (agreed... as I said after the 1st round last year.. the Leafs are a future Cup winner.. not this year.. but more talent, youth and desire than f**king Boston has).  Leafs in 7
Caps v. Jackets (yep.. let's see how well the under the radar.. no pressure Caps do THIS year (spoiler)..  Caps in 5.
Pens v. Flyers (NO...  even more so than the Bolts-Devils.. my upset special for the 1st round...  I hate Philly and damn near most anyone FROM Fhilly..as most of them are a****les ... but I like the way the Flyers are playing now.)  Flyers in 7

West:
Preds v. Avs (yawn.. yeah.. Preds in 4 boring typicallly lower talent Western conference games)
Jets v. Wild (agreed...  the North Stars got the injury bug or this would be a toss up... ) Jets in 6.
Knights v. Kings  (yeah.. if you know anything.. listen to a Caps fanatic who knows all about fantastic regular seasons meaning NOTHING come playoff time. hahah. A complete different animal)  Kings in 6.
Ducks v. Sharks (do they still play hockey in f**king California.. thanks Bettman for mocking the sport...  picking the Sharks.. but who really cares)

CSF

East:
Devils v Leafs  ( they impressed the hell out of me last year.. and only better this year..) Leafs in 5.
Caps v. Flyers   (would make sense.. it would take having the Pens taken out for the Caps to advance beyond the 2nd round.. which Pens fan will no doubt remind us of vigorously..but f**k it.. we'll take it). Caps in 6.
West:
Preds v. Jets (the series of the round...flipping a coin....) Jets in 7.
Kings v. Sharks (oh lovely..  two Californian hockey teams.. again.. who cares who wins)   Sharks in 7 dull.. completely boring games haha

CF

East:
Caps v. Leafs  (it is finally the year for perhaps the single most talented team in the NHL to show up and deliver. .and not facing the Pens.. come on...)  Caps in 5.

West:
Jets v. Sharks  ( I really like the Jets this year...  plus as if you hadn't noticed.. I dislike profoundly the notion of f**king California NHL teams.. so what better pick than a damn Canadian team).  Jets in 6

SCF

Jets v. Cap.  Jets in 7 highly entertaining and goal packed games..   (you really didn't think.. as a 30 year Caps fanatic that I'd pick them to win it all.. just one more kick in the gnads for the long suffering Caps fan.. so close...)  Jets in 7 1 goal games...

You think the Caps will surmount their perennial first-round playoff choke?  The great 8 has a way of seizing up in big games (e.g. playoffs, olympics, etc).

And, do you REALLY like the way the Flyers are playing right now (e.g. after their 7-0 embarrassment)?

2 things...

the Caps never have been first round chokes...  if you had to pick a round.. it has been 2nd round.. and usually against the Pens who simply have had their number... and did well before Crosby-Ovie.

second...   look at Ovie's numbers. He has produced in the playoffs.. where the Caps have failed.. and failed yet again the other night is between the pipes.  I've seen that movie so many times I can recite every line of dialogue...  the single most important position in hockey in the goalie.  The Caps have often needed just that one game where the goaltender steals one for them to win that 'get over the hump' series.. and the various goalies we have had here have never once given them that to win these tough 7 game series they have always found themselves in.

and as far as as the Flyers.. yeah it didn't look good after the first.. a helluva lot better after the 2nd.  It was a out on the limb pick.. said it when I made it.. but yes.. I did think.. still do think.. the Flyers were playing better hockey and would win a 7 game war with the Pens.

^ yeah.. strange series that has been. Took 5 games to actually have a mid game lead change haha.

sort of like the whole of the first round which hasn't exactly scored highly on the dramatic or intensity level.. a lot of lopsided series/games (minus of course the Caps series which is more competitive than it should have been thanks to the Caps.. well.. being the Caps .. and that is why I drink as I do)

well, due the idiocy of the playoff system it's been pretty easy to get this matchup. CBJ may screw it up, but I think it will happen again. (And yes I know Philly is still in it, but not for long methinks) But yeah...would/will be sweet.

Pens over Flyers:

Highlights:  Jake Guentzel's four goals to close out a series (one of seven all time).

Lowlights:  Philadelphia fans for throwing beer cans at the Pens after the win.  No wonder the Flyers had a home-ice disadvantage, losing all three playoff games at home.

After that first game, the Knights/Sharks series has been phenomenal.

Nothing beats playoff hockey.

Also, I am definitely not a Pittsburgh fan, but the league waited waaaay too long to lower the boom on Tom Wilson.

Well congrats to the Caps for finally exorcising the Penguin demons.  Now will they take the next step or will they shart their pants?  Still a shame that the way playoffs are setup that Caps and Pens can't meet in the conference final...

Micky is probably doing back flips....

^ yes...quite the surprise to see. I guess I'll root for them, but it doesn't really matter to me at this point. Hopefully they won't be so elated at just getting to thechampionship series they lose focus and suck badly.

Can't see how the Caps could beat the Bolts.

My first (and last) playoffs prediction this year: Tampa in 4!

Go Knights!

Well if these two teams play like they played tonight this will be a short series, but the opposite of your prediction. :p

I'm bummed about Tampa losing.  With my parents living near Tampa, they are converted Lightning fans, which gives me a reason to cheer for them...especially since the Red Wings have given us nothing to cheer about the last couple of years.  I guess that I am happy for Ovechkin to have finally made it to the Cup finals.  On one hand, I like the idea of an expansion team winning the cup, but on the other hand it seems as though they should have had to have paid their dues before reaching the promised land.

Paying dues does have meaning. Win a cup the first season and all other results will be considered complete failure. That bandwagon will be irreparable smoldering wreckage after just one season of the kind of reality most sports fans endure.

Plus black uniforms are so played out. It's the olive-drab kitchen of sports attire.

While fluery hasn't been great, it's not like the knights offense is going bananas. Have they run out of gas? was the west really that bad this year?

I think they'll pick it up in game 5, and Washington will win it at home in game 6.

Being a fan of Joe Thornton I am always rooting for the guy trying to get the choker label off his back. Congrats to Ovechkin. Although I think Backstrom should have gotten the Conn Smythe. Just glad we are done with the insufferable Vegas story.

I think Ovi was a good choice, leading scorer in the playoffs, emotional leader of the team, captain, etc. Although I think a good case could have been made for Fleury as well...although I suppose his final four games probably squashed that idea.

The 2018-19 regular season is approaching/A Question to Habs fans:

After many games Carey Price will start crying saying that the partisans (who pay his salary btw-15 millions this year) are not nice to him?

1. One game
2. Two games
3. Three games

hahaha.. oh I have been... if I told you I've been on a 3 month celebration bender would you believe me.

As a long suffereing Caps fan since 1980... you better believe I have been. Never thought I'd see it happen.  Was pandemonium here.

Looking forward to seeing what happens with the upcoming season...

Excellent work by the Canadiens management this summer and great move today with the Pacioretty trade. The goalie is still there unfortunately but we can't have everything, of course. Still quite poor on defense but that's what happen when you give so much money to one goaltender. The attack have changed completely, at last, and should be quite interesting to watch in the years to come.

Coach Julien is still there too, for better or worse (should have retired 5 years ago imo) and I'm not sure he'll be able to deal with young, very fast, offensive minded players.

Anyway, I like and am quite positive about this new approach.

it's finally a good move by Bergevin, because it gets a better than expected return for Pacioretty while most benefits won't be felt for several years.  In other words, they remain weaker than last season, or at best no better than last season, while their competitors have improved.  This hopefully means another finish near the basement and another high draft pick in the spring.  The team is rebuilding whether they admit it or not, and that's good.  Just too bad they will have Price hanging around and possibly stealing enough games to put them in the 17-22 ranking.  But hopefully he will suck, or the team will be so unable to score (after all, most of their biggest scorers and playmakers are gone) that it won't matter how well he plays.  The only downside to this season will be that I suspect the team will be painful to watch.  They won't be one of those young teams that loses 7-6 most nights.  Most losses will range from 3-0 to 7-2.  Ouch

^ Let's hope Suzuki will make the team this autumn but yeah the next couple of years should be very painful...things should start to get really interesting in 20-21.

fingers crossed that Bergevin doesn't make any more poor decisions or alienate more players.  And that Laval is finally on the right track with the new coach.  And that, by the time the roster looks better, there is a new GM and coach who realize it's now several decades into the 21st century and not still 1992

I think they're on the right track now..looks like last year results really shooked them up. Bergevin was quite arrogant a year and a half ago but he's definitely a good GM and it's a good thing he's still in charge imo. Like I said, I think Julien lost it many years ago (the reason why Pacorietty asked for a trade?) and Bouchard will be next guy behind the bench before long - or Ducharme maybe (2 years max).

The demolition work is complete in Ottawa.

Looked at the sens rooster last night after I've heard of the Karlsson trade and...I cried.

Good work, Havoc Melnyk!
