So you might question various of these following the fantastic genre I had pursued, and I even wanted to put in Fargo, but I did not. Nah, don't care, going to. It's got some weird factor to it so it's in and Independence Day is out (though I like ID). Not that satisfied with a few of my choices.... So, not as generic as the last list... ------------- Just a fanboy passin' through. |

Of these, Oldboy is my definite pick, although Delicatessen is lovely. Fargo is great, but it's probably my sixth or so favorite Coen brothers film. Some other notable films (yes, I will continue to use these polls as a means of pontificating about movies I've seen): Barton Fink Lessons of Darkness Dead Man Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Bringing Out The Dead (not a great movie, maybe not even a good one, but quite intriguing) Werckmeister Harmonies Spider (one of Cronenberg's best, dreadfully underrated) Punch-Drunk Love It's not a terribly challenging list (referring to my own here); there's the standard reportoire of directors worshipped by every film school student, but I never preferred sci fi or fantasy films (most of the above being merely surreal).

That one's a lot harder. Haven't seen all of these but I'll go with Mullholland Drive with Being John Malkovich close behind. I quite liked Oldboy, Donnie Darko, Abre Los Ojos and Fargo (an odd one on this list) as well. Didn't like 12 Monkeys and hated Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (love the series). I have to get around to watch Delicatessen soon.

i like Addaption but probably equal or better movies of its kind that year. but also Butterfly Effect with Aston Kutcher deserve some love and affection. Also think Stargate is one of those wierd stand-alone sci-fi (though it spawned a huge francise later on) one can easly view the movie by itself without watching any of the series. from the list: its either Jurasic Park, Fargo or the Ninth Gate -------------

Gattaca, a thought-provoking and poetic future story starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. There are many great films on the list. My 2nd choice would probably be 12 Monkeys.

Seen most of these and liked/loved all. Voted Mulholland Drive slightly ahead of Songs from the Second Floor and Last Night. If I had made a similar poll it would probably have included Happiness (Todd Solondz), The Ice Storm (Ang Lee), De Noorderlingen (Alex van Warmerdam), Leolo (Young Leo Lauzon), The Nightmare Before Christmas (Henry Selick) and either Talk to Her/Hable Con Ella or All About My Mother/Todo Sobre Mi Madre (Pedro Almodóvar)... +these two

This list started trying to be sci-fi/ the fantastic oriented, but I decided to spread the parameters as I was struggling and although I like all the films here to some extent (28 Days Later not so much, barely remember it at all) and various of these would make my top "this period" list, and all could make a a really long list, were I to pick my top 25 from those years it would be quite different. I love the choices which have been mentioned in this topic and a few of them I considered. Happiness, Europa, Spider, Barton Fink, Dead Man, Punch Drunk Love, Gummo, I mean I love those films. I kind of realized as I was doing the poll that that really is the kind of film that I really was going for with this poll (surreal edged films). And Unbreakable works well that for that too, and liked it as well. ------------- Just a fanboy passin' through. |

Delicatessan probably made the most impact on me of the films I listed. I have a thing for stranger/ surrealistic movies, and strange music. Not recommending it to you, but one of the oddest, and in this case silliest, films I'e seen (quite gross) is Funky Forest: The First Contact: ------------- Just a fanboy passin' through. |
