two albums that capsulates eachother, with song charing concepts. which makes listening to both quite rewarding.

A Farewell To Kings ends with "Cygnus X 1" and Hemispheres begins with "Cygnus X 1 Book II Hemispheres" so they are connected.
I voted Hemispheres and owned them both in the late seventies. A Farewell To Kings was an album I played in my bedroom at my parents house on a used turn table I bought from a friend. By the time Hemispheres came out I got it on cassette only because I had a car by then and played it a ton while driving around. I have great memories of listening to both back in the day, they were just in a different context.

Very tough choice. Both are in my top 5 Rush albums. I really can't choose.

I only wish they had made more albums like these. However, the boys being who they were and are, that never would have happened.

A Farewell to Kings has the best Rush track ever (Xanadu), but as an album I perfre Hemispheres.

Not very competitive. AFTK is one of the best albums Rush did and Hemispheres is just bad. Lyrically infantile and it really doesn't seem to me like there was a plan to do Cygnus X-whatever part 2 when they did the rather good first part. La Villa Strangiato is pretty good, to be fair but I think it's a very weak album.

Now that is a difficult choice! Saw Rush in Manchester before they went to Wales to record 'Farewell' and that album has a real place in my heart - especially the wonderful Xanadu, The title track and Closer to the Heart. However, Cygnus X1 was never a completely easy listen and there are a couple of steady fillers on it.

Hemispheres is just so much more consistent. While Side 1 can't touch Xanadu - I love the journey and the rest are as strong. However, having La Villa Strangiato at the end of Side 2 - is fantastic - their best ever instrumental - a work of pure genius! So Hemispheres wins for me.

Both records could just about fit onto a single CD.

Tough choice, but I went with Hemispheres.
But, in my book Xanadu blows Cygnus Hemispheres away.

Both recorded at the same studio in Wales, so there's a vibe there. Anyway, it's 'Kings because that finally got me into Rush.

Villa Strangiato and The Trees are excellent, but Farewell to Kings is excellent all the way through (well mostly).

True. They changed their sound a bit after that to a less overtly proggy sound with "signals" being a bit of a transitional album(still very good though).

Well, I think they started their change into more pop songs already in "Permanent Waves". Too me 2112, Farewell & Hemis are the greatest Rush albums, but of course coming two albums were still really great. Signals is best of their synthpop-albums, like also Power Windows and Presto a little.
