Exactly what it sounds like! What particular song/lyrics are caught in your head at the moment?

"Dad diddley office, dad diddley office; you're all full of ball!" from Genesis' Supper's Ready.

In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you
Ten true summers we'll be there and laughing too
Twenty four before my love you'll see
I'll be there with you.

It's been stuck in my head since 1971.

So if you you feel a little glum,
To Hergest Ridge you should come.
In summer, winter, rain or sun,
It's good to be on horseback.
Hmmm!

It comes to me usually during a boring staff meeting or assembly.....you definitely need to do the Hmmmm! to bring a smile to your face! Try it out!

Here's another that pops into my head at random times....

Louise, is the Reverend hard to please?.....you're telling me! ....Perhaps sir, if it's not to late, we can interest you in our Staffordshire plate..............

^Staffordshire play-ay-ate?! OH...NO...NOT ME! I'm a man of repute! Tongue

One of THE most epic lyrical passages in all of prog:

"666 is no longer alone
He's getting out the marrow in your backbone
And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll
Gonna blow right down inside your soul
Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon
In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand-new tune"

"If for just one moment
You could step outside your mind
And float across the ceiling
I don´t think the folks would mind"

That part just came into my mind, didn´t even know what Winwood was singing in it, I had to check from the lyrics.

For some reason, it's this:

I am the one who guided you this far,
All you know and all you feel.
Nobody must know my name
For nobody would understand,
And you kill what you fear.
I call you for I must leave,
You're on your own until the end.
There was a choice but now it's gone,
I said you wouldn't understand,
Take what's yours and be damned.

From George Harrison's "Awaiting On You All"

You don't need no love in
You don't need no bed pan
You don't need a horoscope or a microscope
The see the mess that you're in
If you open up your heart
You'll see what I mean
We've been polluted so long
Now here's a way for you to get clean

By chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free
The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
Chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free
The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see

You don't need no passport
And you don't need no visas
You don't need to designate or to emigrate
Before you can see Jesus
If you open up your heart
You'll see he's right there
Always was and will be
He'll relieve you of your cares

By chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free
The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
Chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free
The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see

You don't need no church house
And you don't need no Temple
You don't need no rosary beads or them books to read
To see that you have fallen
If you open up your heart
You will know what I mean
We've been kept down so long
Someone's thinking that we're all green

And while the Pope owns fifty one percent of General Motors
And the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us
The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
By chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free

By Ayreon (Devin Townshend in this case), Day Sixteen: Loser -

[Father] Look at you, lying there, defenceless and alone

See I am no fool, I always knew you wouldn't make it on your own

'cause you're just like your mother, well, where is she now?

You'll end up like her soon, 6 feet under ground, loser!

I came here to watch you bleed, oh how I love to gloat

If you had any balls at all, you'd grab me by the throat

You don't even look like me, ha! Not even close!

You're an aberration, some freak...I suppose, loser!

I had my fun, I'm going back to the place I don't call home

There's no one there who waits for me, but you won't hear me moan

My ex-wives all sue me, and with half my kids in jail

I'll still come out laughing, coz me? I never fail, loser!

[Rage] NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!

Killing it from afar, go tell it in a bar

You're killing it from afar my father!

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Well some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights

Everybody's building ships and boats
Some are building monuments
Others jotting down notes
Everybody's in despair
Every girl and boy
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
Everybody's gonna jump for joy

Come all without, come all within
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Yep. I feel the same way. I suspect a lot of people on here(if not most)like other stuff besides just prog. As a big fan of 90's alternative this was sad for me too. I have one of their cds somewhere and so have to look for it now(I'm pretty sure the one I have is "if everyone else is doing it...").

"rats
fought the dogs and killed the cats,
bit the babies in the cradles,
ate the cheeses out of the vats,
licked the soup from the cooks' own lades,
split open the kegs of salted sprats,
made nests inside men's Sunday hats
and even spoiled the women's chats
by drowning their speaking
with shrieking and squeaking
in fifty different sharps and flats"

I think the version of Twilight Alehouse on the B side of IKWIL was actually recorded during 1972 but it was first written and performed by the band as early as 1969 (the guitar riff actually appears as a 'joining' section between two songs on 'From Genesis to Revelation') and there is a brain melting BBC session version from 1972 and the lovely Belgium TV (Rock of the 70's) version from around early 1971 SmileSmile

I've been sleeping too long
Oh, I don't have to take this lying down
You can keep your promises
Shove 'em where they belong
Don't ask me to the party
Won't be around.

"Twilight Alehouse" was allegedly recorded during the "Foxtrot" sessions, but I think this is impossible because of what I call the "aural fingerprint". I will explain what I mean by that.

each album has its own specific sound due to the circumstances during the recording sessions. this is especially so for analogue recordings, but to a certain degree even for digital ones, although less pronounced. each studio has its own acoustic parameters, and even the same studio may have different acoustic parameters at different times. this is well-known by any sound technician. I know for certain that TV sound engineers used to record 3 minutes of silence for shootings to get the sound atmosphere. I don't know if this is still so, but it definitely was in the 70s.

now the "aural fingerprint" of "Twilight Alehouse" happens to match the "aural fingerprint" of "Nursery Cryme" and not of "Foxtrot". hence it was definitely recorded during these sessions

Friede and I made a special edition of "Nursery Cryme" which includes the tracks "Happy the Man" and "Twilight Alehouse". both songs were recorded during the "Nursery Cryme" sessions, but for some reason not included on the album. I'm aware of the concept (Room tone) you refer to.. everything ive read (and yes you shouldn't believe everything you read) over many many years leads me to strongly believe that Twilight Alehouse was not 'officially' recorded until 72. Chances are it wasn't at the Island (Basing street) studios where the majority of Foxtrot was recorded as i'm sure some overdubs were done elsewhere. There is a huge difference between the sound production of David Hitchcock/ John Burns and John Anthony/David Henshel and between Trident and Basing Street in terms of dynamics.. have you actually analysed the analogue recordings of these personally or just 'by ear'? i'd be very interested to hear it/ see any evidence, just being a long, long time fan of the band and of the Charisma label 69-75.

Anyway, all that aside aside, I was just respecting, acknowledging and returning your comment on my comment in a jolly mannerSmile

Along the coast road, by the headland
the early lights of winter glow.
I'll pour a cup to you my darling.
And raise it up say Cheerio.

You and I, we got caught down there
In the twisted canyons of the great divide
We walked the floor
Now we don't go there anymore

In the great divide
Nothing to decide
No one else to care for or love
In the great divide
You won't fit in too well

There's a black cat down on the quayside.
Ship's lights, green eyes glowing in the dark.
Two young cops handing out a beating:
Know how to hurt and leave no mark.
Down in the half-lit bar of the hotel
There's a call for the last round of the day.
Push back the stool, take that elevator ride.
Fall in bed and kick my shoes away...

Meanwhile back in the year One
When you belonged to no-one
You didn't stand a chance son, if your pants were undone.
`Cause you were bred for humanity and sold to society
one day you'll wake up in the Present Day
a million generations removed from expectations
of being who you really want to be..........
All together now!!!

Will he take a sailboat ride?
He is very likely to
Will he feel good inside?
He ain't ever likely to
Will he tell you he's alive?
He is always tryin' to
But nothin', no no nothin' does he ever say
In the morning when the day's begun
"Do you think it looks like rain"?
And in the evening or the noonday sun
"You know I nearly missed my train"

(I forgot how good those 3 Supertramp albums were!)

All set luncheonette
Kitchenette to let
I bet I get hamburgerette again
We met in a launderette and kissed beneath the air jet
No sweat no threat
Another one in the back of the net
When I met Jeanette
Substitute Ronette
She said, will you remember
I said, I could never forget her
Au naturalette
Her mom's a millionette
So we shared one last cigarette and swapped false addresses
Jeanette
Jeanette
Dangerous
She's like damp dynamite
Oh boy, enjoy, have a nice night
Won't you promise to write me whenever you can
Make sure that you warn me if you're coming to Birmingham
I get Jeanette
Substitute Ronette
She said, will you remember
I said, I could never forget her
Jeanette
No, no, no I'll never forget you

I love Paddy McAloon 's words.

"The Old Magician"

The old magician takes the stage
His act has not improved with age
Observe the shabby hat and gloves
The tired act that no one loves
There was a time he produced doves

A mirror and a puff of smoke
His mysteries are now a joke
His poor assistant black and blue
She's tired of being sawn in two
She's tired of being sawn in two

Hidden trapdoor, velvet cape
Still from death there's no escape
Words of sympathy and tact
Only underline the fact
Death is a lousy disappearing act

In wet and windy priest-holes. Grand in vast cathedrals.
High on lofty minarets or in the temples of doom.
I hope the old man's got his face on.
He'd better be some quick change artist.
Suffer little children to make their minds up soon.
Bad mouth on a prayer day, hope no one's listening.
Roots down in the wet clay, branches glistening.
Roots to branches
Roots to branches

You know
We’re dealing with
A very critical and crucial time....

The most crucial and critical time that I've ever witnessed
Being as young as I am...

You know...

We all don't want to say nothing else, so we say “as young as we are.”
Now I want to talk about the pronunciation and the realization
Now the educators they call it E.S.P.,

Positive thinking, right?
Some of the people across the other side of the pond call it
Vibe
Vibrations
Astrology and all those different things you understand

But I call it?......

what it is, is what it is
What it is, is what it is

The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reason tends to fly away

Like lesser birds on the four winds
Like silver scrapes in May
Now the sands become a crust
And most of you have gone away

Teach your children well
Their father's hell
Did slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you
