Devin is a talented guy - but Steven Wilson, despite the hype, is the prog icon, at least here in the UK. I'll even forgive him for Permanating.

Townsend. Wilson does nothing for me (unless it's Brian Wilson).

I don't know, I really like both a lot, even though I know much more Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson solo than Devin Townsend. I still want to get some more Devin, of course. Perhaps I would give a bit of an edge to Steven Wilson, but in this case I really would need to know more albums from Devin to vote.

Steven Wilson, but not by much.

Wilson’s music is average Townsend’s music is dogsh*t. I guess Wilson wins

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Steven Wilson is a minor genius. Hand Cannot Erase is one of the great albums of the C21st so far.

Devin Townsend's work leaves me as cold as a bucket of liquid helium.

That's what we do here, polls that sometimes don't make much sense. It's gotten to the point where I actually look forward to polls that try to compare two completely disparate artists/bands.

Pretty tough selection between the modern pioneers of prog, considering their respective areas. I like a good portion of Wilson's works overall but most of the cake goes to Townsend from me. Love especially his albums Ocean Machine and Casualties of Cool.

Devin Townsend has his great, exceptional moments, such as Ocean Machine or a masterpiece called Synchestra. But since latter, he seems to be losing the steam and repeats more of the same, only without conviction. His mellow side has also good moments (several pieces on Casualties of Cool, album Ki) but the total quality is imo inferior. Steven Wilson has constantly high quality music, still shows high degree of creativity and inventiveness, and despite I perceive his solo a little inferior to Porcupine Tree, it tops Devin's efforts full of fillers (Deconstruction, Epicloud, Z2, Transcendence..) by miles.

I respect Devin Townsend and judging by interviews he also seems to be a very cool chap with a good sense of humour. His music though leaves me cold.
Love most of Steven's music so there you go.

His sense of humor is absolutely out of this world. Brilliant it is, and completely crazy. Look up his Instagram profile and you will never think about life the same way ever again. Awesome I tell you, and crazy!

Well both do share a heavy, metallic yet atmospheric and melodic take on prog structures, even if they work with different moods. You could say that Devin Townsend is doing for experimental metal what Steven Wilson is doing for artsy rock.

And Dev's music is actually fun and worth listening too, unlike Wilson

walked out once,
fell alseep the second

never call me an idiot so I learned for the last show we saw of his at the Howard Theater...  I got so f**king drunk I didn't care to walk out.. and couldn't fall asleep

saw Devin only once...  just before Xmas in Baltimore... was in a bad mood...  no cigarettes..  was on the wagon... and yet did not walk out, fall asleep... or feel the need for pint or 4 to get through the show.

Townsend by a landslide....

And why did you go to see Wilson 3 times if you don't like his music?

At this point, Townshend.

in my experience seeing an artist live is the true judge ...I've lost count of the number of bands whose albums did nothing for me but had 'it' live and delivered the goods live and were fun and entertaining live With SWilson yeah of course the albums did nothing for me but held out hope seeing him live might do the trick. Besides...   we do have friends that do really like him so when they call up and say... hey man... let's go see SWilson what I am supposed to say.....   no? Of course not... you go and try to act like you are enjoying yourself or simply hit the bar and get yourself loaded to where it could be the f**king NKOTB up there and you'd still have a fun time.

It seems to me the problem here is one of personality.....Townsend is 'likeable' to many and apparently Wilson is not....subjective as  always. Perhaps due to his public comments.
Music wise....Townsend's brand of 'exp metal' simply doesn't interest me but I find Wilson both solo and with PT to have some good melodic songs and albums.
Frankly I could care if he's a prig in his personal life...the music clicks with me far more than Townsend's stuff.

He is not a prig. Confused

He has made some very valid points.

Well, I did enjoy the Raven show I got to see from Wilson, he just picked all the songs I would have hoped to hear (the whole Raven album, plus the best of his solo ones). I could hardly think of a better show. However, it would be great to see a Townsend show too, I'm sure he puts a great performance.

Dev is absolutely more personal, inspiring, introspective (even though Wilson* tries to look it), ambitious and puts his heart into it.
Dev also tackled melancholy several times better than anything melancholy Wilson** ever done, in fact even Nirvana does melancholy better than him, lol

On the other hand, Wilson has around 12 ambient albums and Dev has 2....which is unfortunate

* and **: in porcupine tree and the 'solo' albums
