I saw that there is a thread for
Swedish prog, so I figured why not make an appreciation thread for Norwegian
prog. There are many great bands from this cold country in the
north and last year was an incredible year for Norwegian prog, with several highly
rated albums including the #1 album from 2017 here on PA; Wobbler's "From
Silence to Somewhere" What is your favorite Norwegian band? Norway has been dishing out some of the most interesting experimental music lately. I absolutely adore the new Ulver album! Other bands not mentioned in the OP that I really dig are Seven Impale, Major Parkinson, Shining and elephant9. Nevertheless: Wobbler (great, stuff!!) Susanne Sundfør (my number 1!!!!) Magic Pie (kinda like Flower Kings, but I dig it) Ark (only one great album, but it's beyond awesome) and Airbag (okay-ish) Gazpacho (okay-ish) a-ha is really, really awesome aswell. Can't be bothered with the whole black and pagan metal thing, although Arcturus did a great album back in the day. |

Ruphus; started more in a heavy prog vein, moved through a 'Yes' phase and then into a Jazz-fusion phase- all had stunning moments and less stunning moments but great ambassadors for Norwegian rock Another band ive always enjoyed were Utopian fields  And also 'Kerr's Pink' ( which is a variety of Potato by the way...) ------------- |

^After being completely won over by their most recent Bydyra I'm inclined to agree with you Tom. Man that thing is just perfect to these ears. The fact that it reminds me of old Danish cartoon music (Cirkeline) adds a whole other dimension to the already deliciously played psych rock. One that speaks to the inner child in me. Definitely one of my favourites from 2017 Scandinavia welcomes you to it's international kindergarten! Music is your life blood Tom Happens to be mine as well.I shift all year between electronic, avant, psych, funk and jazz and just about everything in between. Those shifts though makes me think that 'Damn this is the best thing ever since sliced bread!!!!!'...though I'm not sure it'd have the same effect on me if i just stuck to my guns and stayed within a certain type of genre. Variety is the spice of life (along with garlic and chili of course). Have you by any chance heard Tusmørke's two 2017 releases (three if you count the live one as well)? They released a second album during December called Hinsides ('Beyond' or 'over yonder' in English). ^Nahh I mentioned them in my first post on page 1 Great band and wonderful album that Blackbox. By far my favourite from the band up until now. Just listened to the last two Tusmørke albums, and I enjoy both a lot. Not sure how high I would rate them, but they're both better than the band's low point to date, Riset bak speilet, IMO. But what's the live album you're speaking of, Guldie? SSA? That's just a digital album, no? It hasn't seen a pysical release, I believe. When it comes to Norwegian prog as a whole though, I prefer the current jazz rock/fusion scene, which, in the way that members of different bands are cooperating in several different band settings, I think of as similar to the old Canterbury scene. Bands I feel belong in this Norwegian "underground" jazz rock "movement" includes Bushman's Revenge, Grand General, Astro Sonic, Krokofant, Elephant9, Motorpsycho, Møster!, Reflections in Cosmo, Jaga Jazzist, Ultralyd and Needlepoint. If anybody can think of other bands that has members from two or more of these bands, please let me know. I'd love to add albums fitting this description to my discography. -------------

It seems that my favorite prog in recent years has been coming out of Norway. I discovered Wobbler back in 2007, with Hinterland, and the band just simply kept getting better and better through the years, culminating with From Silence to Somewhere. Tusmørke is another band I've discovered, I have all their albums except for the Spectral Haze split album from 2015. It's a bit strange to see them do a children's prog album with Bydyra, but there you go! Much better than Barney the Dinosaur, I have to say. I really get a kick of Krizla (Kristoffer Momrak) quoting Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" on flute on "Ekebergkongen" off Ført Bak Lyset. Jordsjø was something I discovered on Prog Archives, and coincidentally Breidablik (since they released a split cassette with Jordsjø called Songs from the Northern Wasteland). I went to Bandcamp and was just blown away by both of their music. Jordsjø released a limited edition double vinyl on Pancromatic simply called Jordsjø which compiled material from all their cassettes, except for Jord. I was lucky to get a copy, from a dealer via Discogs and that album rarely left my turntable for about a month. Music not unike Wobbler, Tusmørke and Änglagård, although "Hekseskogen" sounds just like Bo Hansson! Håkon Oftung, the brains behind Jordsjø appears on the new Tusmørke album Bydyra, playing guitar. Jordsjø has a deal with Karisma Records (not to be confused with the old UK Charisma of Genesis and Van der Graaf Generator fame) and Jørd will become available on CD soon. I was lucky to score a cassette of that, from Duplicate Records who still had a couple copies at the time I bought this. I knew that this band was going to graduate from limited edition demo cassettes to wider distribution. And for Breidablik, this is basically Berlin School style electronic music, although the Bandcamp page calls it the "Bergen School of Electronic Music", Bergen being the town Morten Birkeland Nielsen, the man behind Breidablik, hails from. I was able to purchase the Vinter cassettes from Bandcamp, and the LP of Penumbra through a dealer via Discogs. As for '70s Norwegian, I don't have a lot. I have the old 1990s CD reissue of Akasha, from 1977, reissued by Ad Perpetuam Memoriam from Sweden. The production, performance and sound quality is a bit amateurish, but it's a weird combination of space rock and symphonic prog with tons of Mellotron. I have a few Terje Rypdal albums (as they're not impossible to find as they're on ECM), but they're more fusion, but I really dig a lot of those moody atmospheres he creates like on Odyssey. I know there are others like Ruphus, Junipher Greene, Folque (more folk/folk rock), Prudence, Popol Vuh/Ace, Høst, Aunt Mary, and others.

The first side is great fusion, with nice use of Mellotron by a member of Popol Vuh/Ace, the second side is orchestral. I also own After the Rain and Waves (and Odyssey as mentioned already) as well, but I know I needed more Terje Rypdal in my collection. The problem is I only find his albums used on occasions in nearby local record stores to where I live, but if I have to I'll order online. |

Ah, what is happening in Norway?!? My three top 2017 albums are from Norway (Wobbler, Motorpsycho, Jordsjo). The band NEEDLEPOINT has been kicking around the ProgArchives teams and can't find a home. Their last album Aimless Mary in 2015 is one of my favorites of all time! Needlepoint is very good! Some of Norway's fines musicians at work there. I love the warm sound, and Bjørn Klakegg's vocals is really laidback and cool. Christian Wallumrød, the keyboard player have contributed on a lot of albums, I especially like his work with Humcrush featuring Sidsel Endresen. I'm still waiting for the compilation set by The Chronicles of Father Robin to come out, that 12 inch they released a few years ago is absolutely magical. The vocalist from Wobbler is delivering some amazing vocals on that record. Elephant 9 with Reine Fiske (Dungen, Landberk etc.) is amazing as well, really dark and intense.

Unfortunately, there is no date on that release for now... But Andreas (from the band) has told me that the last bits is being finished now, so hopefully it will be ready soon. It will consist of material going back to the late 90s. Needless to say I'm very excited about this! Have you heard the songs on the EP?

Yes, it sounds really promising! No news of the album yet, but it looks like they recorded it in 2016, so hopefully it will be released this year. Some of the guys from Weserbergland, White Willow and Wobbler (session only) in the band.

A great band. A couple of their songs were covered later by other bands, e.g. All We Have Is the Past. As you probably know, they had to change their name becasue of the German band who had it first.

When I was a music reviewer, the (then) new albums that picked my interest were Magic Pie's albums, and Lucifer Was' albums. I even listened their whole discography many times. Also as for prog metal, Pagan's Mind generally delivers, Illusion Suite's debut album "Final Hour" was awesome, Trivial Act's "Mindscape" and Oceans of Time's "Faces" were also decent. Including the 70's prog rock stuff, I think Norwegian scene is almost always of high quality. The only thing that I really didn't like is Leprous, ironically they've been one of their most famous bands in the recent years. |

About 16 months ago I was introduced to Motorpsycho by a couple of friends. And very few days have gone by since then that I haven't listened to at least one of their albums. I'm hooked. Such a massive variety of styles encompassing pretty much most rock genres and extending outwards from there. A band from whom you never really know what to expect, except excellent music. And an incredible live band. I've seen them six times now, though only once here in the UK. So I've made trips to Köln (DE), Alkmaar and Tilburg (for Roadburn) (NL), Düsseldorf (DE), and Drammen (Norway) to see them. At the last of those, they were joined by Elephant9 who were utterly spellbinding. If you have not seen Motorpsycho, but are curious and have the opportunity, I highly recommend them. They play a different set each night, drawing up the setlist just hours before the gig. And they leave plenty of space in a number of their songs for jamming. So what you're getting is not a carefully orchestrated repeat of every other show on the tour, but something immediate, visceral, unpredictable and alive. Don't get me wrong, well-orchestrated shows can also be incredible, but among progressive rock bands (or bands with progressive tendencies), they tend to be the norm and personally I find it highly refreshing and more than just a little bit exciting to experience a concert - by a well-established band - that's less predictable. But be warned, they play loud, so bring your earplugs. Anyway, I expect I'm preaching to the converted here as Motorpsycho already sit at the top table in the Norwegian rock hall of fame. ;) But if you haven't heard them, just check out their 4-star-plus rated studio albums (Trust Us; Phanerothyme; In the Fishtank [with Jaga Jazzist Horns]; The Death Defying Unicorn [with Ståle Storløkken]; Behind the Sun [with Reine Fiske]; The Tower) and one of their live Roadwork albums, and you'll start to see what all the fuss is about. But don't listen to just one, because this is very much not a band that can be represented by one album, so diverse is their output. :D It's good to see Amgala Temple mentioned above. Their album Invisible Airships is a beautiful slice of effortless psych-jazz-rock fusion. One of my albums of 2018, along with Elephant9's Greatest Show on Earth. I now look forward to going back over this thread to pick up some more recommendations. Cheers.

There are a few bands listed here on PA: Causa Sui, Düreforsög, Papir, Afenginn, Taylor’s Universe, Øresund Space Collective, Værket as well as a dozen or so psych bands. The scene for experimental music in Denmark is much more focused on weird pop, experimental hip hip, metal, psych and electronic...though more of an experimental idm/house take on it. ------------- “The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. We hygger ourselves very much that’s for sure but there is also a darkness there that imho comes from the darkness around us. This time a year it’s literally black from somewhere around 4 in the afternoon to 8 the following morning, well at least where I live (northern part of Jutland). Also why we export so much “Nordic Noir” to the outside world. People really got hooked after watching ‘Forbrydelsen’. I literally laughed out loud in the bus home from work reading about IKEA and Änglagård  I detest IKEA with a fiery passion. Whenever I’m in there I die a little. There are no freaking windows!!! Ever thought about that? You zombie around amidst all these Borises and Ülvas with no natural lighting and in this artificial smelling odour that stems from everything in there. A black hole of consciousness. Like reading a book but not registering meaning. Vacant. The only time I remember anything from a trip to IKEA was because I was drunk..or still deunk from the night before. I’d promised a friend of mine that I’d help out transporting his new sofa. I saw the bed testing area while he headed for sofacountry. Score! Must’ve slept for a while because I was brutely awoken by this tiny little blonde who looked about as indignated as I’ve ever seen anyone in my life. I guess some folks just turn 80 in their minds around 19? Anyhoo I managed to stumble out of there and catch probably a half hour’s worth of my friend pondering the exquisite virtues of leather vs cotton. I share your love for Motorpsycho! What a wonderful band. I preordered the Crucible--I even set an alarm to wake up at 3am here in California so I could get the limited edition vinyl! I can't believe they are so varied from album to album and maintain such a high quality. I hope you managed to get the vinyl. The Stickman Records website seemed to having trouble with all the traffic that morning. Fortunately I only wanted the CD and manged to get it of course. Along with that I also ordered a bunch of other Motorpsycho CDs as many of their albums I only have on download at the moment. A few days later I also managed to order a copy of the CD version of A Boxful of Demons at a highly discounted price from a Norwegian site via a friend of mine in Oslo. It's been a good week for buying MP albums!! Can't wait till they all arrive :D I'll check out Cheer Accident. I know the name but haven't heard them yet. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll just mention Conception and Ark, both with guitarist Tore Ostby, very talented musician. Ark - Burn the Sun is one of the best progressive metal ever. I also love a band called Deja Vu, they released only one album, in 1976 - Between the Leaves.

Thanks! No news on Ingelrii, I should ask the guys. They were planning to do some live gigs, but nothing's happened. The sound clips on their FB page sounds promising. I know that Wobbler is rehearsing and recording some new material these days...! And a new Jordsjø album in late April/early May.
