Subject: German prog band named...? [Solved!]

There was a German prog band I liked with mostly short instrumental songs labeled in German. They often had German spoken word bits at the beginnings or ends of songs, not a lot of singing though, some background female vocals, perhaps wordless. I don't remember anything fancy about them, in terms of artwork or anything. I must have found them here but I can't find them anymore. They were on Rhapsody (which is the same as Spotify), so not too too obscure. There are a lot of bigger named Neo-Prog and seventies bands which aren't available, so they are not totally obscure. They were, I believe, a before the 90s band. I keep thinking of this word "Tanzig" in my head but it's probably wrong as the band name. It's a german word. Many thanks!

there is a band named "Danzig". Danzig is actually a formerly German city that became Polish after WW2 under the name Gdansk. it is the city the German author and Nobel laureate Günter Grass was born in.

the band is however American and named after its founder, Glenn Danzig, and the music of the band is not Prog but Heavy Metal

I looked and looked again and I think it's probably lost to me. It was a symphonic-ish band though, not heavy or anything... instrumentals with incredibly annoying spoken word prefaces to the tracks. I remember a black album cover with white print. Dang it. They had this one song that I thought had a genius passage. Too bad.

Krautrock and German and French and Italian prog really sucks though IMO, otherwise, lol. Eloy is the only German band I listen to other than this one I forgot. It's a curse from the nordic Krautrock gods.

@BaldJean
Gdansk/Danzig was Polish city since its origin. However, it was occupied by Prussians (Germans) for 127 years. During the prolonged occupation, Danzig became subject to the german settlement politics and cultural influence.

the history of Gdansk is actually much more complicated than that, but I will admit I simplified it to recent history. Poland and Germany are inextricably entwined in the complete history of Gdansk

Not sure that this checks all the boxes you've set out, but could it be this one?

Not any of those. Maybe I dreamed them?

In the words of a great prog-related artist:

You are the most extraordinary [band]
You write the most peculiar kind of tunes
I met you [streaming] as I was [listening to random stuff]
One afternoon

Wasn't it the most amazing meeting?
Surrounded by those [german voice-overs] from the deep
You started telling me a funny story [I couldn't understand]
And I fell asleep [and forgot your name]

Oh what a dream!
Oh what a dream that was!

I don't get it. Eloy is great. Kraftwerk is great. Tangerine Dream is great. But the really nichey stuff which people usually mean I don't get. I'm not musical enough to describe what it is, but I'd say crude or eccentric or abstract is at the tip of my tongue. Poor production values a lot of the time. Which is important to me.

I liked the band "Neu" that you pointed out better. They're fairly relaxing sounding. Maybe a little too relaxing. Getting sleepy.

Indeed. I know everyone is entitle to his/her own opinion/taste, but boy, how much great music are they missing.

Kind of true though. Foreign language music is tough to listen to, in my opinion. Then there's the music itself, which DOES NOT sound much like English prog rock when I've listened to it. Not trying to be universal in my judgement but most of what I've heard so far I don't like or find ponderous to listen to.

Also, don't like American prog. Kansas isn't even really that great. I don't listen much to them. Other than that I guess starcastle is okay. I don't listen to newer "prog" which is often populated by American bands for some reason, probably because of the unlistenable metal connection (which may have something to do with why I don't care much for what I've heard from Europe).

I'm more of a pop-rock fan, classic rock etc. than metal. So a lot of what is called prog is really far away from my tastes. I love APP and ELO, for instance. Most people consider that soft rock. Once again, few American bands get very high up on my favorites list even with classic rock.

If you don't like non-English vocals, check out instrumental bands like Ashra (Germany), Goblin (Italy) and Heldon (France).

Also, to say Kansas isn't that great is (of course) purely subjective. They're a fine prog rock band up through Leftoverture. After that, it's up to you.

Check out the first two albums by Utopia, too.

There's tons of prog that doesn't sound remotely "metal." Wink

Will check those bands out.

I love the band Utopia. Forgot they were American. My favorite American bands typically aren't prog but are New Wave or Classic Rock.

Ashra – Correlations; Belle Alliance

Goblin – Profondo Rosso; Zombi

Heldon – Interface; Stand By

I've reviewed almost all their albums here.  Lots of good stuff even if they don't have what I would call a masterpiece. The first is probably the best.  They were on the tip of my tongue while I was reading your description, but you already got your answer before I got to the thread!

Love this alt mix to the title track

I see a lot of references to Camel music in the PA reviews section.  Might have have to look into this band further.  Wink

^ while you're at it, if you haven't dione so already, check out this other German group who were sometimes called the German Camel.  They too didn't appear until after the peak of prog, but they hung around for 5 acclaimed albums and sold a fair number of records

You should check out some of the more modern Krautrock bands such as Electric Orange and Cosmic Ground.

With regard to Italian prog - there is some really great music but if you don't speak Italian you have to consider the vocals as just another musical instrument - I would recommend starting with Le Orme, PFM and Banco particularly their earlier 1970's albums.

I can't speak Italian but really enjoy listening to RPI with Italian lyrics. PFM for example released some versions of their albums with English lyrics but I much prefer the Italian versions. Their most recent release - Emotional Tattoos - had an disc with Italian lyrics and a second with English lyrics, the Italian version is the one I mostly listen too.

Flaming Bess........never heard of them.....well... I like the fantasy art cover far better than the black and white one.......pretty mellow German prog.....has a later feel to it...almost jazzy at times.

ps:  Starcastle...really?....they aren't fit to carry Kansas' equipment.
