I just discovered a new tool on my PC: how to play music backwards.

So: could you name some pieces of music in which there's a "backwards message" or something like that.

Interesting site.  However, they missed the best one.  I believe it is between "Piggies" and "Blackbird" on the White Album.  Here, there is no question that the message was deliberately recorded backwards, because it is complete gibberish when played forwards.  When played forwards, it sounds like John is saying, "mzzmzzmzzm."  When played backwards, the unmistakable line is "Paul is dead, miss him, miss him, miss him."

By the way, regarding many of the ones on the site, it is, of course, entirely possible that some, if not most, of these are complete accidents; i.e., the power of suggestion, mixed with "sound chains."  After all, I seriously doubt that George Harrison sat there before writing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and said, "Gee, I'd like to have the line 'pass the gun now, it kills the love, the love is cold' come out backwards when I record the song.  What would I have to say to make that happen?  Oh, yes, all I have to do is say, "while my guitar gently weeps."

Please!

Peace.

Yes, many of the examples seemed very farfetched and silly...

I think Pink Floyd has a few of those.  For instance, on Empty Spaces.. the backwards message is ..

"Congratulations, you have found the secret message, send your reply care of Old Pink at the funny farm, Chamflont......Roger, Caroline is on the phone. "

It's really really hard to do things that are listenable when played backwards. Anyone else a fan of "Twin Peaks"? That poor little person literally had to learn his lines backwards and forwards!

Many of this examples are speech reversals, as the site explains this cases are natural, there's no intention to do it. One of this cases is the one mentioned about STYX, they were accused for the song Snowblind, when their intention wasn't to hide any message, so they decided to hide a message in the album Kilroy Was Here, specificly at the beggining of the song Heavy Metal Poisoning. A track that precisely makes fun of fanatism against music.

If you listen to the track, you will hear a noice that can't be understood, but if you play it backwards they say "Annuit Coeptis - Novus Ordo Seclorum" , some fundamentalist groups used this back recording to accuse the band again, but they never took the time to check the one dollar bill, this phrase appears surrounding the pyramid in the back:

Something that kids learn at school.

When I was at school we had this lecture about reversed words in songs. Somebody played us a tape with lots of examples like Queen's "Another one bites the dust" which sounds like "Start to smoke mariuhana".

I seriously believe some artists experimented with this reverse technique. It was all the rage at some time. But I don't think anyone was influenced by these messages.

This is also called Backmasking. Here are quite a few to chase down;

Good luck, let us know what you find out!

Are you referring to the track Revolution 9? I don't think Piggies and Blackbird have backward tracked sections.

I think the bit maani is referring to is actually between "I'm so tired" and "Blackbird". I does sound a bit like "miss him, miss him". My feeling is that it's not backwards, it's just John mumbling, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, it became part of the ridiculous (but fascinating) "Paul Is Dead" rumour thing.

Try "Ya Hozna" from the Frank Zappa album Them Or Us. The entire lyric is backward.

For 30 years, I've tried to figure out the final bit of "Time to Kill" off Horslips' brilliant album, The Tain. It sounded obviously Gaelic, but try as I might, I couldn't get the translation (I speak some Scots Gaelic, but Irish is pretty close).

Last year, I visited their mandolin/fiddle virtuoso Charles O'Connor at his shop in Whitby and asked him what it meant. He told me it was simply the lyric recorded backwards.

30 years barking up totally the wrong tree!

I never learned about that!

The empty spaces one is hillarious, as is the Britney Spears one.

    Try this website:

    http://jeffmilner.com/backmasking.htm - Jeff Milner's Backmasking Site

There is some backward tracking stuff. You can listen to part of a song with the lyrics and then you can listen to reversed track with lyrics you supposed to hear.

If you play Tool - Lateralus backwards during the part where he keeps saying "spiral out", he will still say spiral out... likely a coincidence, but it ties into the theme of the song...

This is silly and I am by no means a fan of Eminem, but if you play one of his songs backwards where he says "My name is" it says, very clearly and obviously intentionally, "Its eminem, its slim shady".  He obviously chose that name just so he could have that backwards message.  Deep.

My favorite controversial one is the Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven, because its so long, and because of other things said in the forwards song, like "sometimes words have two meanings", and "theres still time to change the road your on"... it becomes Stairway to Hell... although I think its a coincidence.

Anyone know what it says in a section of Shallow by Porcupine Tree from 2:55 - 3:00? I've tried to figure that out..... but I'm not too good at figuring things out.

I like the Britney Spears one, that is truly genius. And the Pokemon Rap- "I LOVE SATAN!!" just makes me laugh. I bet if you played that over and over it would be the funniest thing ever. Either that or it would make you go insane.

Yeah, I'm sure that is just gibberish.  Backwards speech has a very distinctive sound, and I hear that sound when I reverse the gibberish.  John spoke gibberish all the time on recordings.
