I've owned Labrador retrievers and Belgian sheepdogs. Never had an issue with any cats surviving in my backyard. In fact, there's been a couple times the dogs killed them. Keep your damn cats indoors.

Don't poison cats.   A pellet gun sounds far more humane, or maybe a sprinkler that's connected to a movement sensor, if such a thing exists.

I live in an older subdivision and the man across the street lets his 7 or 8 cats just roam and live outside...they sh*t on our yards and flower beds. They sneek in when you are asleep or not home... have tried animal repellent granules...moth balls...sprays,,...I'm getting ready to take drastic measures .
Any fool proof ideas..? The animal control people aren't allowed to round up cats...just dogs in my area.

Yes use citris fruit,  old peels etc.  They hate it!!...  Trust me it works!!!.....    Lemons, Limes or Oranges,  etc ...

Allowed or not, cats are outdoor animals and your neighbour is doing the right thing by letting them come and go as they please.

As far as I'm concerned if they come onto my property...they are fair game. No one else seems to want to do anything about it....so it is what it is.

I'll try citrus peels......but if that don't work they are toast.

The notion of killing a domesticated animal is abhorrent.   I'm sorry it's become such a problem for you as I know what it's like to own property and have my life profoundly affected by a bad neighbor ~ nothing worse than that ~ but this talk of poisoning quiet animals that control rodents and give love & companionship to those who don't or can't own a dog is appalling.   And I suspect rather illegal.

If there were as many cat-lovers on this site as there used to be, you'd be the one who's toast.

Try googling for cat repellents - there are sonic devices and various other options. I believe lion poo also works (which you might be able to get from a local zoo).

Or get a dog.

If you know who the cat belongs to you should attend the guy/gal to this and ask them to teach their cat to use a litterbox, since it is ultimately their responsibility, but if there's too many it will be hard to avoid.

Shooting a cat with an air rifle or poisoning it is animal cruelty of the worst nature.

£5000 fine in the UK and a well deserved court appearance. You would also be prosecuted under the UK Firearms Act, which air rifles (outside of Scotland) fall under.

A cat sh*ts in your garden. Get over it, frankly. That doesn't give you the right to kill or maim it. Have a word with the neighbours, take a photo, submit it to the Council, tell your neighbours that their cat sh*t is their property and you'll be returning it to them.

Even thinking of shooting a cat for that is absolutely disgusting. Get a grip.

I'm a bit surprised by the behaviour of these cats: do they also pollute the other gardens around the block?

I can't really give you advice: in my family, we always had cats and/or dogs preventing other pets from invading our gardens.
It sounds a bit stupid, but, well, sometimes the best repellent against cats or dogs is... having cats or dogs.

Anyway, from what I read on websites, you could try:
- spreading some mustard diluted in water all over the garden
- spraying powdered pepper
- rubbing garlic or onions on flowerpots
- planting some flowers like lavender or tyme
- vinegar could work too.

Actually, no, that is a terrible idea. Domesticated cats should not be let out. Sorry, you aren't supposed to let dogs roam free in your neighborhood, and neither should cats. They spread disease, and worse there is already a tremendous glut of unwanted litters of kittens filling animal shelters. Millions of them -- 3.4 million enter shelters in the U.S. every year -- and there is just not enough homes for them all.

Spay or neuter your cat and keep them inside.

Indoor cats are miserable. Keeping them inside is like locking them behind bars.

Yeah, I thought it might be cultural differences but cats that roam in your neighborhood are not stray cats and won't become stray cats unless they're already mentally ill or abused. Having had two cats that walk around freely in different neighborhoods for about 10 years each tells me that they don't get diseases from just being outside, at its worst they can get a tick. And they definitely don't like being locked inside, not even the neutered ones.

-------------

Posted By: Davesax1965

Indoor cats are not necessarily miserable. Cats trade territory for security. Ours won't go out as they are timid rescue cats, we have a field full of badgers and foxes behind us and the neighbourhood is simply crawling with cats.

Perhaps Dr Wu should avail himself of a water pistol. Cats hate being wet, one or two squirts, that'll dissuade his garden visitors. I'm still astonished that someone could come on a public forum *and ask for advice about animal cruelty* having failed to google "cat repellent".

Me neither Steve...just anger rearing it's ugly head ,but I have tried multiple things and just came home and more cat sht in the same area where I placed cat repellent....several times...so the usual things simply don't work .
The dog idea or the other  remark of moving is well simply stupid...but then anymore I expect that from most people.

I can definitely understand your frustration Doc as it must feel like some kind of home invasion by a group of pack animals. I'm sure that you can fix this problem without taking drastic measures but it will probably be a full time job and who has time for that?

Wow, so if you buy a house with a garden with actual nearby neighbors you don't expect cats to come into your garden at any point? It seems quite inevitable...
You may call others sensitive but you're the one who is quite sensitive of the presence of cats apparently.

"Never intended to take any 'drastic measures'....but apparently some who have their heads up their asses are overly sensitive."

Ohhh yes he did. Have a look at page 1 of the thread.

Overly sensitive MY ass, actually.

Anyone tries to poison or shoot my cats, I contact the Humane Society, the local police and get them prosecuted and fined to the full extent of the law. They get the full vet bill as well. And probably a spot in the local paper.

I convinced a friend of mine not to shoot a drone which was hovering above his garden as it classes as "criminal damage" and an actual firearms offence here in the UK. That's just someone elses' property and not a living being which belongs to someone else.

Coming on a public forum and mentioning that you are (see page 1) considering poisoning or shooting cats invites you to rightful criticism from any right thinking and decent person.

So have some.

Then attacking anyone who gives you that criticism is just digging the hole a bit deeper.

Then denying you ever intended to take drastic action.......... ha, there's MY ass again.

If I were you, and thank God I'm not, I'd buy a water pistol and delete this thread. Not necessarily in that order.

It's a whole nother story if they're sh*tting there of course like I already said, that's the responsibility of the owner to prevent, if he doesn't have an owner you should take him to a shelter (even if they'll have him euthanized there, in which case it's undeniable anyways that there's too many cats and drastic measures might be necessary...).

An intelligent post....maybe it will rub off on a few others.
Way too many cats, as the links above mentioned.
It is the owners onus...sadly he simply doesn't seem to care ; even though the police(or someone from the town) came out once before.
Well... sue him! (you're in America right? maybe there's some law concerning private property or something that makes him responsible for the cat sh*t)
Please don't ever kill them though, preferably some organized group would just capture the stray cats and castrate them

Its Jamaican English, 'No kill I' means 'Don't kill me'.
Even more Jamaican would be 'No kill I and I'.

Short term I can't think of a reasonable solution other than shoveling the poop into their yard where it belongs. Long term, you can make a fuss to your legal representatives (town council, homeowner's association, etc.) and have your other neighbors do it as well. Sometimes it takes a group of organized, disgruntled citizens to get things to change, and a healthy dose of time. If your local area can pass a local law about loose pets pooping all over the place, then fines can be levied against the guilty party. Make it a weekly fine until the guilty party fixes the problem and proves it has been fixed. People wake up when it hits them in their wallets or have liens put on their homes. If they have laws about lawns being taller than 6 inches, they can have laws about pooping in other people's yards.
