All bear names that also became bands whom alln share a long carear spanning 50 years whom have dazzled audiences with amazing keyboard chops for ass long. Masters of all that is keyboards. Be it hammond organ, mellotron, moog, grand piano, hochner, fender rhodes or harpischord they can do it all and with intent to awe and inspiration.

Voted Mann because overall his output (more prolific over the years ) tops the other two for me as being more enjoyable....but I'm a fan of the  first 2 Greenslade lp's and several of the Argent lp's.  Greenslade was really a combination of two players with Lawson so it's hard to separate that sound into just Dave Greenslade....his solo lp's are not that interesting to me. And Rod Argent didn't seem to have much of  a solo career.
I really have no idea who's 'better' at playing keyboards.....not being a musician.

^ Oh, anything he does live! The 40th Anniversary CD of Odessey and Oracle is a great showcase of old Zombies and Argent songs where Rod does a clinic on everything from mellotron to a pump organ. He's also one of the nicest people you could to meet in rock music. A real class act.

Hi,

Very scary ... to choose.

However, Manfred Mann was around from the start of the "progressive" era, even though he was not always doing his own work. But one could easily say that his versions of many folks' work are/were rather progressive by comparison.

I'm not sure that Rod Argent was that great, and if one takes away one hit song, I am not sure that he would ever be remembered. Dave Greenslade, gave his name to the band, but I am not sure that the band was strictly about him.

A better listing or idea for one would be Lord vs Wakeman ... that ought to get a few folks' feathers going.

Lothlorien. Argent is a master of the Hammond, though for this poll, I vote Greenslade.

I'd choose Manfred even over both of those.

Argent for me and easily the best song writer when you think of both Argent and The Zombies. Wakeman considers his organ solo on Hold Your Head Up to be the best so he most definitely does belong on any keyboard poll and not just this one.

Also I would like to chuck in that Mann's use of the cute bit of music (Chopsticks I believe) on Blinded By The Light is sheer genius!
Greenslade is very good certainly but I struggle to think of anything memorable he did.

Greenslade, for his first album

The Hammond solo on "drum folk" is one of the finest doom laden solos ever in prog history....I defy anybody to listen to the emotion that Greenslade manages to convey and not recognise his mastery of sad Hammond music. The mellotron that precedes it is also genius.....

^ Highlight of Greenslade’s entire career !!
(2nd comes that wah’d solo on Cactus Choir)
Mann is pretty good, though barely on my radar of Keyboard greats
Argent is quite superb.

Lothlorien. Argent is a master of the Hammond, though for this poll, I vote Greenslade.

I do like the early Argent stuff (Ring of Hands is solid) and the first 2 Greenslade are good...I even listen to the last 2 , but overall Mann has contributed more in several styles and areas over the years.
Having said that ,  Argent and Greenslade are more talented on the keys as far as technical ability.

For me, Solar Fire is almost brilliant - Mann’s talent really works here (for me). I’ve gad several MMEB LP’s over the years, but i refuse to part with Solar Fire. If we’re talking ‘mainstream’, then Mann is a force to be reckoned with. With Argent (Rod himself, and the band entity) Circus takes the cake for me. And Greenslade, well, even Time And Tide means a lot to me, but he did have the benefit of having an equally talented player in Dave Lawson.

Has to be MMEB

They did some great albums in the 70s and 80s.
Somewhere in Afrika is my favourite

Not to be nitpicky but since there are three options the one choice should be "none" not "neither." Neither implies two. Wink
