I'm very new to the scene and haven't been able to find a lot of bands I like so I thought I'd ask for some recs. I mostly like prog metal so far but only that with clean vocals. My favourite band so far is Dream Theater but I also really like Symphony X, and their "Evolution (The Grand Design)" was utterly mind-blowing. So I guess I'm looking for more really epic grand stuff like that. I really appreciate creative or unusual chord progressions especially in vocals, which I feel that song really exemplifies. Another song I think has that feel to it is "Defector" by Muse, although that's not really prog. Despite mostly liking metal I do also dig Rush, especially Permanent Waves, but I don't like *all* of their stuff. I'm a vocalist myself so I really appreciate talented singers and vocal-centric music (which is why I like Rush and Muse), but I have a fairly deep voice so I'm having trouble finding anything I can sing along to without dropping an octave or two. I also appreciate synthesizers and more industrial/electronic sounds. If anyone knows of any bands that fit these categories (the more that can fit the better!) please let me know!

I'd like to suggest local band Tiles, who are sort of a cross between Rush and Dream Theater. They opened for DT on one of their European tours a number of years ago.
Maybe Mastodon might appeal.

If you appreciate both Rush and Dream Theater, theres a very good chance you'll go for Fates Warning. The best entry point is the album Parallels.

I guess for Prog Metal you do must know (besides Dream Theater) Ayreon, Pain of Salvation, and Riverside. And the newer guys, Haken. Another of the big ones of course is Opeth, but they do have lots of growling (I have mostly stayed clear of their growling songs, and have got enough non growling ones that I do love, though). Another one I have come to love is Devin Townsend, though he does get his good share of growling, and grunting, and whatever extreme singing he might want to try out... however, he is the only artist whose gruntings and whatever I do enjoy (they just fit the music in a way that he really makes them enjoyable for me... at least on some songs). Another one I understand is very apreciated is Tool, but I have only heard one album Lateralus, which is their best rated one, and even though I found it good and enjoyable, it didn't really blow me away... however, you do like Symphony X, whom I didn't really enjoy so much, so you might just as well like them too. And the two ones that I still haven't gotten into, but should check out soon enough, are perhaps the founders of Prog Metal (even before Dream Theater): Fates Warning and Queensryche. Oh yeah, and just in case you haven't heard them yet (you should have, though, as part of getting to know Dream Theater) is Liquid Tension Experiment, which is basically an instrumental Dream Theater with Tony Levin in Bass instead of Myung (oh yea, that's the thing, you prefer vocal driven music).

Though more heavy/crossover prog, I'll recommend anything with Ted Leonard as vocalist: Enchant, Thought Chamber, and the last three Spock's Beard albums. Thought Chamber is the most prog metal of the bands. Personally, I would rather listen to Leonard over Labrie.
I also recommend Haken.
