3 great autumn related compositions drenched in mellotron.

Which one's your favourite?

I absolutley love Depuis l'automne, and do like it better than Impressioni di Settembre (which I do like a lot too... perhaps my favourite PFM song), but I don't know the Strawbs one. Perhaps you could have included the Moodie Blues related Forever Automn too.

Autumn is one of Strawbs best compositions - so it gets my vote over those quality tracks by PFM and Harmonium.

Adore the Strawbs "Autumn". Such a beautiful track.

Tough choice, but have to go with PFM for this one.

Classic prog of uniquely sublime beauty such as Impressioni Di Settembre is why I will always return to it. Strawbs unfortunately ruins their chance of nailing a fully fledged shivers-down-your-spine-masterpiece-stunner with that childlike singalong ending. What a shame. Harmonium - well I never got what's so great about them I'm afraid.

Haha, as much as I love that track, I have to agree with this

PFM by far.

Only the Strawbs could make a "childlike sing along ending" truly progressive.

Strawbs (and Hero and Heroine) definitely remind of autumn/fall (I first listened to it then). PFM is a summer band to me. Gotta check out that particular Harmonium track, as it doesn't ring a bell (elephant bell ringers).

PFM.  And I love the way they recycled Impressioni Di Settembre 2 years later into the title cut on The World Became the World with Sinfield's English lyrics...brilliant Wink

Very hard pick, but have to give it to Harmonium. And I agree Mostly Autumn were just begging to get into this poll, lots of good candidates among their songs. Smile

oh going with other...  the greatest Autumn song ever written...

September Song... really surprised with as many covers as have been done over the decades of that 8 star American standard.. across all kinds of genres...  no prog ones. That I know of at least.

In fact.. I'd give my right arm to see one of our prog groups over here do up an album of prog versions of the great American songbook. That would rule....

I just gave the Strawbs song a listen today, and indeed it's a beautiful song. Still, I'm not sure if it could grow on me to beath the Harmonium one, but I guess it could easily end up in 2nd place. All 3 of them are gorgeous songs, though.

I can think of a few others off the top of my head:

Late November - Pavlov's Dog
Forever Autumn - from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds (sung by Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues)
Autumn - Edgar Winter (not prog but it's from the same album that has Frankenstein)

It's that childlike singalong ending that sends the most shivers up and down my spine.  The rest of the track is great too of course

Arguably, "October to May," David Cousins from Two Weeks Last Summer and also on Strawbs recording(s?) is an autumn song (in the beginning) as well as "Autumn,"  by said Strawbs.  And beautifully done.  My vote, since this is a poll, however, goes to The Strawbs "Autumn."
