No worries...welcome to the Forum. In answer to your Q. Wishbone Ash are not included in the Archives. Do you think they are Prog?

Well it is difficult to judge really because of the vast array of bands that are included.  I myself would not include Queen or Deep Purple, even though I do like their music.

recently I've bought their first two albums and I find they do have
some progressive leanings (especially Pilgrimage). However I
wouldn't classify them as a prog band, I think that the "classic rock"
label (whatever that means) could suit them fine.
Btw, there's a twin guitar break in Pilgrim that reminds me of King
Crimson's Discipline - only it was recorded ten years earlier!
Opinions?

Wishbone Ash, of course they are Prog!  I mean, without doubt it does somewhat depend on who's version of what 'Prog' means, you choose to accept .  The self-named 'Encyclopedia of Prog' website certainly chose to put them in their list (check it out - http://www.gepr.net/ - http://www.gepr.net/  )

And the commendable attempt of this website   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock   to give Prog a definition comes close to defining much of what I think can be found in the music of Wishbone Ash ie. the 'complexity' of the melodies that use 'ambitious, eclectic, and often grandiose style' mixes of of both musical harmonies and lyrics.  Ok, they are not Pink Floyd but neither are they Queen.

For me Wishbone Ash with their more tempered Prog style managed to avoid some of the excesses, that more notable 'Prog' bands were later lampooned for, and was ultimately their popular downfall.

Wishbone Ash  - what a great Prog band (and still touring!)
