While there are many I love not on the list, I gave Ceux du Dehors a vote. Second on the list would be Scary Monsters. Not on the list, well, those are two of my favourite years for music: Art Zoyd's Generation sans Futur and Symphonie Pour Le Jour, Dun's Eros, Eskaton's 4 Visions and Ardeur, Bobby Beausoliel's Lucifer Rising, Picchio dal Pozzo's Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi, Present's Triskaïdékaphobie, Eider Stellaire I, Serge Bringolf's Vision, Abus Dangereux' Le Quatrieme Mouvement, Art Bears' The World As It Is Today etc.

Oh god help me, too hard, Discipline, Drama, Duke, Defector, basically any record that started with 'D' .   Not to mention the two greatest Rush albums, like ever, dude.

voted Drama mostly because Crimson was taking a bit from David Byrne.   Otherwise, Discipline all the way, thing blew my and every other musician's mind.

Unless I can vote for everything, I can't vote. LOL

'80-81 are two crazy, intense years for prog, metal, AND jazz-fusion. Really. Tangerine Dream, Saga, Gamma, Twelfth Night, Al Di Meola, etc., also released some of their best material in that small window.

For an album released in 1980, I prefer Peter Gabriel III (Melt) to any of these.

Interesting that you left off a few rather obvious ones. In particular I'm referring to killers and the same titled debut by Iron Maiden and British Steel by Judas Priest. Also, the first two Ozzy solo albums. Good list though(despite the fact I don't consider BOC or VH to be metal) and I'm not familiar with all of them so I'll keep those in mind.

Thumbs Up no doubt.. love both..  but admit to being a bigger Blizzard fan... another case where perhaps Diary was more even more consistent.. a better album???.. like any good ELP fan who acknowledges Trilogy as their best.. yet least favorite album.. I tend to like uneven albums where there are more rough and less polished edges. The highs are just a bit higher..  even if the lows are slightly lower

^ Sure--  I mean I don't think there's much doubt Diary was "better" in the sense that it was more developed musically and had a better mix, but that debut is absolutely classic.   They practically saved metal.

Well, I didn't think you were going for a complete list of NWOBH or metal in general. Obviously there's lot's of good ones out there. Isn't PoE by Priest rated rather low usually? Do you prefer it over British Steel or SfV? Oops, I guess we are talking 80/81 here. As for IM NotB is usually rated as their best or PoM. I guess you don't follow the consensus which is good. It's always good to make up your own mind about things.

Rush~PW from this list. I own almost all of the list, sure many other good ones were missed but staying true to the OP list.

PoE is highly regarded, as is ...Vengeance (superb record). I have little use for British Steel. I'd much rather listen to Sin After Sin and Stained Class.

Somewhere In Time may have a slightly more commercial sound as far as Maiden goes, but that's my favorite album of theirs.

Voted Other. My choice would have been Remain in Light by Talking Heads.

But I really like Scary Monsters and Discipline too.

From the list it has to be Moving Pictures.
With Scary Monsters, Duke and Permanent Waves very close behind.
Discipline was very good and an unexpected breath of fresh air, but it was still far from the best KC would ever do, while Moving Pictures IMHO, while probably not the very best Rush ever did, belonged to their peak era.

Just the Sanctuary edition.
Quote Raven  Rock until You Drop
Nice! I need to hear more by these guys. I have Raw Tracks
They were a rough bunch, very raw sound, not progressive like the Witch or Maiden.  But a great band of bros.

Yeah, I could have listed the Police, the Cure, U2 and others but there's only one problem with that. Who can figure out what it would be? Hint. What is the name of this forum not to mention website? :P

Really? Well, here is the listing for the ratings of the first several JP albums from the rate your music website:

Rockarolla -3.11

Sad Wings of Destiny -3.92

Sin After Sin -3.73

Stained Class – 3.90

Killing Machine -3.68

British Steel -3.73

Point of Entry – 3.12

Screaming for Vengeance – 3.91

Defenders of the Faith -3.90

And from metal music archives:

Rocka Rolla – 3.57

Sad Wings of Destiny – 4.47

Sin After Sin – 3.90

Stained Class - 4.10

Killing Machine – 3.86

British Steel – 3.96

Point of Entry – 2.97

Screaming For Vengeance -4.16

Defenders of the Faith -4.02

As you can see "Point of Entry" is one of their lower rated and regarded albums. I know some people like it but the consensus shows it's not one of their better ones. British Steel is rated higher. So I guess BS has use for others and not you and so much for PoE being highly regarded. ;)

I agree with you!

And then, after all, the beauty of Prog Polls is to compare only SOME (not ALL) groups or album.

Yeah, but it's a different story when some people list every album from this time period regardless of whether it is prog or not. I don't feel like I should have to explain that this is a poll for prog bands but unfortunately I felt the need to edit the title to reflect that. Just being on a prog forum(ie not non prog) on a prog site isn't good enough I guess. Confused

From personal experience (3+ decades), PoE is regarded as "classic Priest" and is one of their best albums. For example, if you go look at Amazon's page for the 2014 CD reissue (not other editions, vinyl or box sets), you'll see 86% of the user reviews have it at 4- and 5- stars. That's based on roughly 150 ratings/reviews, more than twice as many on MMA.

If you look at the reviews on MMA, some guys rate it lower because some songs charted, and one guys feels it's more "hard rock" than "heavy metal." Subjective, of course. I'm sure "Don't Go" turned some fans off, too. I see Trane gave it a low rating, too, which is funny because he generally doesn't seem to like metal. Wink

I wasn't aware you were trying to turn this into some kind of competition. JP aren't even in my favorite 50 metal bands, to be honest. I like many other bands ahead of them.

No, just disagreeing with you about what is considered popular for JP. British Steel had two of their biggest hits in "living after midnight" and "breaking the law" as well as "united" which is a very good song. As I pointed out it's rated higher than PoE on those two sites. PoE AGAIN is not considered one of their better albums from that time period. How many other sites do I have to pull up. You don't get it. It's rated and ranked lower than BS despite what you said on BOTH sites! Not at the very bottom but towards the bottom here: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/judas-priest-albums-ranked/ Toward the middle of the pack here. https://www.loudersound.com/features/every-judas-priest-album-ranked-from-worst-to-best Number 24 on this list. Ok, on this list it's ranked 9 which isn't too bad but look what number one is. :P https://metalnation.com/ranking-judas-priest-first-to-worst-the-studio-albums/

But it's cool though. Relayer is probably my favorite Yes album even though it's usually ranked fourth or fifth by fans.

I can see your house from here was 79. Camel didn't release an album in 80. Nude was in 81 though so I could have included that but it slipped through the cracks.

It's okay for you to disagree. If everyone agreed, the world would be a boring place.

When I said "I have little use for," that wasn't for you, that meant ME. I don't care for that album overall, and "Living After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law" bore me. If you also think Rotten Tomatoes is the ultimate guide to "good" and "bad" cinema, that further proves how misleading ratings sites can be (especially when you're looking at sites with ratings entered by fewer than 500 people worldwide, lol).

By ALL means, pull up more sites. It won't change my opinion(s). LOL

I like some pop music. Not big into pop over all but some bands I think are good. U2 are one of the founders of alternative rock imo. They aren't one of my very, very favorite bands but I like them a lot. I'll admit part of it might have to do with my age. I was a teenager when they started to get really huge and decided to see what the fuss was about. I became a fan. I also like other bands from that era such as REM and Def Leppard. So sue me. :P

Yeah, they had huge album sales too but more importantly huge concert attendances. They hold the record for largest stadium single band shows. Sure some stuff that is really super popular is crap but I happen to think U2 are a good band. Not prog though. I'm not someone who equates prog with only bands they like. :P

Things are obviously black-and-white with you. I stated my opinions. But for argument's sake, you could pull up 100 sites to assert your prognosis that British Steel is a "better" album than Point of Entry, and it won't diminish the latter's status as "classic Priest" one iota, nor will it make your assessment of the former any less subjective. Wink

I guess we are. I'll be pushing 50 pretty soon too(if I'm technically not already). We both possibly got into prog at a really weird time too(the 80's). I'll see your Crimson and raise you a Tangerine Dream, who I knew only via a film soundtrack (The Keep), their relevance as a progressive band only becoming apparent through meeting a guy in high school who was a fresh transfer from a few states away. I went to a rather large high school, and I wager fewer than 1% of the student body probably knew who or what a "Tangerine Dream" was. But we sure as hell tried to educate everyone. LOL

Ok, fair enough. You did say you didn't like it though. That's cool. 90125 isn't my favorite Yes record even though it's the one that got me into them in the first place. We all have our favorites and yes it would be boring if we all liked the same thing. Nothing to fight about. LOL

That's pretty low. You could be right. However, TD did a lot of soundtrack stuff in the 80's and even got a mention in a SNL skit. Also, when I went to to a festival in the late 80's that featured Springsteen, Sting and Peter Gabriel I distinctly remember seeing an attendee there wearing a Tangerine Dream t shirt. I was well into this stuff by then and that's something that you don't forget. Wink

And that's not arguing? It's classic era Priest but so is British Steel. Maybe in your opinion British Steel isn't "classic priest" but all those websites with ratings and rankings prove otherwise.

I never said that. LOL

Ok, fair enough. You did say you didn't like it though.

Affirmative. Now who's not "arguing right"? LOL

That's cool. 90125 isn't my favorite Yes record even though it's the one that got me into them in the first place. We all have our favorites and yes it would be boring if we all liked the same thing. Nothing to fight about. LOL

Again, ditto. But it's held up a lot better than Talk, believe me.

Not to me. I actually prefer talk(if mainly for Endless Dream). Then again I don't see it as a genuine Yes album in some ways. It should have been a Cinema album but once they got Jon on board they couldn't call it anything else.

Yes, even I have to take a break from arguing. ;) I don't argue for the sake of arguing. Only when I disagree with someone. :P

No doubt he attended the '88 Tower Theater gig in Philly.

Could be. It was in 88 so you could be right. There were prog fans around back then but most people didn't know the underground stuff. I read rock books and found magazines that had listings for prog catalogs so I probably discovered stuff that many prog fans didn't know about until the internet. Also, I remember seeing a guy wearing a Fripp or League of Gentleman t shirt at a Al Dimeola and John Mclaughlin concert in 1989 in NYC and in 95 when I saw King Crimson at the Tower I saw a guy wearing an Ozric Tentacles t shirt. So there's always been people who find the "good stuff."

Pre-Net, I had to rely on word of mouth, Wayside Music's catalog and the UK zine Audion, along with the odd mention or review in mags like Keyboard and Musician. The latter had the funniest, and shortest, review I've ever seen; it was for Big Generator — "Just say no."

I discovered "the laser's edge" catalog in the summer of 89. Before that it was a rock encyclopedia, import music catalogs, the Episode mailing list(don't ask. Lol) and a guitar book that listed Robert Fripp and his band King Crimson(who I heard of anyway through a cousin who was into Yes and Genesis). I didn't discover wayside catalog until later. I suppose we should either get back on topic or take this conversation to pm land.

No way I'm not going with Moving Pictures, but I will take this opportunity to say how excellent and unfairly ignored A is.

Tricky one - love Duke, Drama - but has to KC for me. Such an incredible album.
